As an Australian, I am very glad you pronounced emu correctly. I have heard so many foreigners pronounce it as ee-moo, not eem-you. But just because nobody is perfect, the kookaburra is actually pronounced cook-a-burra not kook-a-burra. I like lots of birds, but have a favourite bird sound. It's the eastern whipbird. It's the coolest sound when bushwalking through a rainforest.
All I could end up saying on that item was "So _that's_ where the Linux distro got its name!". I think Gentoo Linux is supposed to have a reputation for being fast, which fits the animal namesake.
Crow is an interesting bird. Recently I've been feeding a couple of crows hanging around my house. After a few days they started coming to me on my way to work or they follow me walking my dogs, they also brought some of their friends. Now I have about 12 of befriended crows landing in front of me any time I leave the house and marching along me waiting for some snacks I bring for them. Wild birds, go figure!😀
Don’t forget the fact that the Red Tailed Hawk is commonly used as the default sound for a Bald Eagle. Real eagles sound like squeaky toys. Kookaburras are also carnivorous and are the largest members of the kingfisher family. There’s a petting zoo of sorts near me that has 2 kookaburras and they feed them thawed dead mice.
What about that awesome bird that reproduces every sound it hears. Saw it in a nat geo documentary an it clicked like the shutter of a SLR camera among other weird sounds. Not sure if i saw that bid in a different mental floss video but it had to be on this list. That bird is amazing!
I remember hearing what sounded like a hawk in my neighborhood when I was little, and being confused because it wasn't really a good habitat for a hawk (small city/large town block without a lot of open space nearby) and it's a pretty big bird to hear and not occasionally see. I wonder if it was actually a jay. We don't have blue-jays. Can Steller's Jays do the same thing? Wait... what's the point of eating something if it comes out intact on the other end? Or can snails just handle being partially digested. If so, snails are a lot more awesome than we give them credit for.
Excellent video, the animal related ones are my favorite! I would like to point out the difference between "breed" and "species"- a domestic animal species that is bred for distinguishing characteristics can eventually become a breed. For example, the dog species has many breeds, such as great danes and chihuahuas. The dog species is a different species from wolves. There are many species of birds, but only a few have different breeds, most notably chickens. My favorite breed of chicken is the Rhode Island Red, and my favorite species of bird is the loon. Hope that clears things up, keep making great videos!
Humans can see into the ultraviolet too, if we remove the lens. It looks white since all of our color receptor pigments react to UV, but the lens is opaque to such wavelengths.
I wonder if the hoatzin wing claws are a feature they've kept from their non-avian ancestors, or if they at one point didn't have claws but those genes were "turned back on".
Not just you. The intro music was clear, but the vocals were off

I seem to remember that a previous episode of something also sounded terrible. Maybe you guys should replace whatever potato you are using for recording sound.
My favorite bird is the manakin bird, usually known as the moonwalking bird. There are some fun clips of it dancing here on UA-cam. (The clip from the show "QI" is my favorite.)
I just realized that the organization of the script is solely based on how may great transitions they can get from fact to fact. That must a be a fun time. "Speaking of the headless horseman,Marie Antoinette once..."
Love the bit of Washington love and my favorite bird is the sharp shinned hawk also archaeopteryx never flew and only glided true flight and thus Dino-birds appeared in the late Cretaceous
Your last bird, the kookaburra (Pronounced as COOKaburra - as in cooking; it's not kooky at all!) is a member of the kingfisher family - of which, there are in other areas of our planet, in varying climates (the African jungle types are much more colourful!). I don't know if they all have similar calls/laughs (which is their territorial broadcast), but perhaps the movies haven't got it wrong after all.
Most kingfishers don't sound anything like a kookaburra. They have a much higher cheaping call very like other birds with an occasional trill. So nowhere near the distinctive laugh of the kookaburra :)
I heard that there was a physicist trying to figure out breaking one of the sound barriers 1,2,3,4... ect. and to do so he looked at a certain bird and modified the plane structure to be similar. Anybody know if that's actually a thing? and where to find that? google searching birds and mach speed gives mixed results. Thanks!
Even though it technically isn't a bird and is referred to as a "Dino bird" I use this in quotes here as it is merely a gliding dinosaur also archaeopteryx doesn't have a silent p
the fact that the Cassowary is considered the most dangeous bird is hilarious. Come to Australia, even our birds are dangerous. it's fun here
I always get happy when I see Mike here.

Shout out to bird nerds and their life lists!
Did you know that when you hear an eagle cry in movies or in tv-shows, the sound is that of a red-tailed hawk? 😊
Yes and I very often see both on separate occasions
unless its a movie or t.v show of someone kicking an eagle in the balls, then its probs the eagle crying
but what is the average airspeed velocity of the unladen swallow?
TheRonster9319 African or European?
oh I don't know that AHHHHHHHHH!!
I was waiting for this in the video. Slightly disappointed, but glad someone in the comments picked it up.
TheRonster9319 eleven meters per second for a European swallow, idk about African though (and yes I got the reference)
those gentoo penguins really are a step-up from the gen 1s

Humming birds, they're amazingly beautiful little birds.
I like crows, ravens, magpies and similar birds, but jackdaws are probably my favourite. They can be incredibly smart!
I like ravens, hail Odin, and falcons and hawks. pretty much any birds of prey
Don't make a big bird of prey sick.
'Cause that would be ill eagle.
Pun - isher that yolk was emu-sing

This is all i needed in life. Thank you
I would say that's more like "spreading fire" or "using fire", not "starting fire".
😒
I can't believe the "great emu war" didn't make the list.
Right?
+
My favorite bird is archaeopteryx, and I was so glad you included it in your list.
My favourite bird is Zapdos :)
Is anyone else massively disappointed when these lists videos aren't done by John?
yes
No, but the horrible audio disappoints me.
Nah
Not nearly as disappointed as when the girl with the fishing tackle in her nose does SciShow.
Nope.

Vlad Macovei it’s called a lyrebird
I love Cinereous Vultures. They're massive, they clean up all the gross stuff, and they have the most soulful eyes.
Favorite bird - Opus from Bloom County!

I'm glad Fletchinder's Pokedex information was based on real world bird behavior. Super interesting!
Superior Lyrebird is the best.
Oh yeah. It's amazing what it can imitate 😄
I wish there was a way to know whether or not it'd be a John Green video without having to click.
UA-cam needs a John green detector feature
My thumbnails are often animated when hovered
I like John, but I favor Hank. Sorry John...
I love Mike Rugnetta's narrative style

Love the flamingo. Even if they are not faithful to each other.
a toucan it's the most beautiful animal that I ever saw live
I always thought that the state bird of Utah was the sea gull. Turns out, it is the California Gull. Thanks for educating me!
I like crows. They're super smart, and can make tools, recognize individual human faces, and solve problems.
My favorite bird?
Peregrine falcons. 200+ MPH nose dives ain't nothing to sneeze at.
I don't think I've ever heard an American say "kookaburra" before. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was weird.
How do Aussies say it?
His saying of it is basically how everyone says
Kinda like 'cook-a-burra' said quickly
Yeah, he got the double-o sound too long. It's pronounced more like the word "cook" than "kook". We also tend to say "poop" the same way.
Humans can see into the ultraviolet too, if we remove the lens. It looks white since all of our color receptor pigments react to UV, but the lens is opaque to such wavelengths.
Birds hate purple koolaid. Fantastic work here. Very informative!!
Quality bird facts.
Now I understand why the cassowaries in far cry were so disproportionately dangerous
They really are dangerous
I wonder if the hoatzin wing claws are a feature they've kept from their non-avian ancestors, or if they at one point didn't have claws but those genes were "turned back on".
Yeahhh, a list about birds which is great because I like birds.
I saw a gull steal a fish from a seals mouth just a couple weeks ago. The seal looked so confused.
That sounds sad, but hilarious.
I don't know if it's Mike's voice, but the audio is incredibly buzzy in this video.
Not just you. The intro music was clear, but the vocals were off
I seem to remember that a previous episode of something also sounded terrible. Maybe you guys should replace whatever potato you are using for recording sound.

Australia....
Birds setting things on fire...
Yeah that sounds about right.
I just realized that the organization of the script is solely based on how may great transitions they can get from fact to fact. That must a be a fun time. "Speaking of the headless horseman,Marie Antoinette once..."
I live in Madison WI and we do have a lot of plastic flamingos here. I have an orange and black pair for Halloween decorations ... for reals!
Love the bit of Washington love and my favorite bird is the sharp shinned hawk also archaeopteryx never flew and only glided true flight and thus Dino-birds appeared in the late Cretaceous
I've seen jays imitate hawks to drive other birds away from our feeders.
Love it!
9:45 funny u say that, cause I do animal impressions, and I always use very similar sounds for Dolphins and kookaburra 🤔😁
My favorite bird is the Brown-Headed Nuthatch.
birb
That mic quality tho
+
But that Mike quality.
It's been so ongoing I think it's on purpose for some future topic.
Thank you for pronouncing Heron correctly. You'd be surprised how many people are unable to.
What about Silverhawks?
I love birds
Does anyone know if some birds have the ability to show comfort to an injured bird?
My favourite bird is the song thrush, I had one and he was a real character :) **tear** Oh Reepicheep
Yay for Australian things!
Kleptoparasitism is my favorite word. thanks guys *highfive*
Thank you
Lammergeiers are freaking amazing
flamingos and bearded vulture are my favorite birds
Hollywood also uses a red-tail hawk cry for all eagles, hawks, falcons, etc.
Came to the comments to see if it were my ears closing. Glad to know I'm not the only one...
The Cassowary, just in case you wanted to know what a velociraptor encounter would be like.
"they actually have red eyes"
Nothing special. I do too.
Cassowary's are terrifying. Incredibly aggressive. Welcome to Australia! (and New Guinea)
I LOVE ARCHAEOPTERYX! sorry I got excited.
My favorite bird is the Crimson Rosella... Idk why tho, it's just really heccin cool lol
Idea channel guy is part of this channel? Since when? How'd I miss this?
But... but what is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
I feel like a valuable opportunity was missed here to talk about the Great Emu War
awesome video
Old kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see.
The audio is terrible, sounds like it's clipping very hard to listen to.
thanks for your help I subscribed i just wanted to know the fact for school !!!!
Hahaha!!! Take that, SEA-CHICKEN 12'S!
Birds are hilarious
You guys should do a shark fact vid!
audio quality is terrible?
The most interesting fact I learned is that a lemming is an actual animal, not just a game character..
The audio seem a bit off?
Yay on #10!
Awh, I hoped I wouldn't have to look up what a kookaburra sounds like.
Your last bird, the kookaburra (Pronounced as COOKaburra - as in cooking; it's not kooky at all!) is a member of the kingfisher family - of which, there are in other areas of our planet, in varying climates (the African jungle types are much more colourful!). Oh really?! So they are truly unique! Cool! Thank you!

Anybody know if that's actually a thing? and where to find that? google searching birds and mach speed gives mixed results. Thanks!
Me: hearing Hawks
My brain: Boku No Hero Academia?!!!
My favorite bird is my harlequin macaw Terry.
.. I like birds.
no mention of the Kakapo, Kiwi, Moa or any of the cool NZ birds :(
Got chased by an emu at a farm one time. Fucking terrifying.
"FUCK YOU BIRDS! To me every single birds is just a shitty sequel to the Dinosaurs!"
Birds are fun
Leave It To The Weavers?
archaeo (ancient) is the first element, pteryx (winged) following. the p is silent just as in pteradactyl. "archaeo - /p/teryx".
I dunno why, but I just looked on the wiki page for Archaeopteryx. My whole life I thought they were considerably bigger than they are. Weird...
Even though it technically isn't a bird and is referred to as a "Dino bird" I use this in quotes here as it is merely a gliding dinosaur also archaeopteryx doesn't have a silent p
I bet you guys can't guess where the southern cassowary's live...
Australia, of course
oh my god
finally
an american who pronounced emu properly
6:30 OH YEAH!!!
Woodpeckers also generate 1,200-1,800 G's every peck.
