I love it when Mike is the host. I love rabbits. Especially bunnies. They are so cute and just keep to themselves and you can even train them to go in a litter box!
Alex was a grey parrot, not colorful like the one in the picture. And Alex died young because he was overworked. He'd tell his female keeper that he wanted to go back or have food, but she'd tell him no because she wasn't done with him yet.
I wasn't able to find a single source to support your claim. Don't spread stuff like this without also providing credible sources. You risk harming many people's reputation and work for no reason at all.
Sleepteiner Watch the videos of him here on UA-cam. I watched a bunch. Sometimes he would say that he wanted to go back, but the woman would tell him no and keep doing her experiments with him.
You forgot the most awesome thing about Alex, he was the first ever animal who knew how to talk (including apes that know sign language) to ask a question about himself. He asked "what color am I?", the answer was grey. Also, I always find it funny when it's said that we think "X" animal is cute because it reminds us of babies. Out of all the people I've ever known they all think animal babies are way cuter than human babies and some even think that human babies resemble a wrinkly potato. And I'd have to agree. Dogs also have handedness! My first dog was left handed and my current dog is right handed.
Yeah same. I genuinely don't think babies are cute, but i do think animals that have those characteristics are cute. But animals that look too much like human babies, like baby primates or pigs... not so cute.
Unidragosisisis And a polar bear has paws the size OF a platypus, lol. But that's never been my point, polar bears are just cute while being some scary ass predators. Polar bear cubs are about the most adorable thing ever.
All of Mike's videos for the last several months are like this. I assume they are all from the same recording session and there was a faulty mic that they didn't realize until after the recordings were complete.
If bison are able to vote, does that mean they have basic understanding of numbers? What if it was a tight vote with 1 or 2 bison margin, would the bison be able to notice that without counting? Does it suggest they have basic counting skills?
My favorite animal overall are dogs, but my second favorite animal is the kakapo, which is infinitely more interesting than a mere dog. Their bizarre mating behavior (their mating calls are in VERY low frequencies and females only lay one egg at a time, and only if certain flowers are in bloom) and their disregard of danger have caused the numbers of these (coincidentally also flightless) parrots to shrink ever since Europeans arrived in New Zealand but slowly they're rising again thanks to excellent conservation efforts.
What ever the lowest standards are for calling something a zoo, the Mobile Zoo is it. It's essentially a farm with a few animals on it. There's no real entrance; you kinda just park and wander around, though you can get a year pass for $14 (why you'd ever come back is anyone's guess). The swan lives in a kiddie pool and the bears are behind some chainlink fence where you can feed them peanuts through PVC pipe. If you keep walking, you will end up on someone else's farm and you can see *their* animals as well.
You're giving squirrels too much credit, I heard they often forget where they buried the nuts and thus planting a seed that grows up into a tree. Even better!
6: "Despite?" As a rule, larger animals will have slower metabolisms. That's not "despite their large bodies," it's expected. This year, both whales and sloths have been described as having the slowest metabolisms of all mammals. The stories didn't use modifiers like "land animals," and the actual numbers weren't mentioned. 14. Don't bet on it only being 22. Did they actually compare waveforms, or just listen? Some animals will have calls they can distinguish to identify individuals.
I don't buy into that "cute things remind us of babies" thing. I find many things cute. Human babies are not one of them, at all. The mere sight of them annoys me.
10:09 Jesus! What were the cats that didn't like to be pet like? Even domesticated cats are: 1st pet good. 2nd pet I'm going to glare at you 3rd pet I'm slashing your hand to hamburger.
I know it's a silly nitpick, but some of the pictures are incorrect. The study with Cowbirds and Robins used the American Robin, and that picture was of a European Robin. European Robins and Brown headed cowbirds would never even meet in the wild, they live on different continents. Alex was an African Grey, not a Blue and Yellow Macaw. The river otter study (with the 22 distinct calls) was performed on Giant river otters, the picture showed a different species of otter. I know it's nitpicky, but this is a science channel and part of science is being as accurate as possible. A lot of mistakes can stem from stuff like this where people just assume one parrot is the same as any other parrot.
scientist are sometimes trying too hard just to get their name documented or recognize... sane person: "wow look at that snake, it's a cobra" scientist: "nope, it's a king cobra" sane person: "but it has scales it's also venomous" scientist: "nope, totally different, king cobra is few mm longer and the hood is narrower." sane person: "but they look exactly the same" scientist: "nope, totally different, need a new genus on its own"
#3 - How greedy of those squirrels to do all the work of collecting the nuts and storing them away, when they could be sharing the nuts with the lazier squirrels! It's unfair that he would survive while the others die, so he should share so they could all die.
I dont think socialist squirrel minds an incredibly small portion of his nut tax going to help little baby and senior squirrels (who also have paid or will pay nut tax in their life that goes back to benefitting socialist squirrel). Majority of welfare squirrels also have paid into the same nut tax because you cant get squirrelfare if you are unemployed/not recently laid off in majority of trees.
Do the Robbins kick out anything that is a waste of space in the nest? Can you put a random non-egg shaped object in there that the bird will kick out? It's their nest, it's for their offspring, the offspring need room in the nest, so shouldn't they be inclined to kick out any foreign bodies that impede this? Will they kick out real and/or 3d printed eggs of other birds? Wouldn't it be a better study a bird that falls for the not their egg trick, and 3d print the corresponding foreign eggs to see they still fall for it?
#12 - Yes, I head an oversimplification of this. It said that giraffes have long necks so they could reach the leaves of their favorite trees. So then to that I asked how the trees got to be their favorite if they couldn't reach the leaves in the first place. Also, I think it's stupid to say that their long necks evolved for the purpose of the males using them to fight. Why do the females have long necks then?
the getting to higher foliage is a matter of having less competiotion for food with other species and the genes for long necks arent affected by gender.
Does anyone else find this dude kind of spastic? Not in a mean or insulting way, he just seems like he's either excited, nervous, or hopped up on caffeine lol. Either way, it's a cool video
Deer and antelope do the same thing as bison... It's actually a very democratic means of deciding where the herd should go. Once >50 of the herd have signaled their direction of choice and agree, the herd moves.
Another Mike video, another reminder of the bad audio session he recorded all his recent videos using. Guess we can track how many episodes they record at a time based on this at least.
I love it when Mike is the host.
I love rabbits. Especially bunnies. They are so cute and just keep to themselves and you can even train them to go in a litter box!
This is my favorite episode ever. Thanx and more please.
My favourite animal has to be the Mantis Shrimp. Any creature than can move so fast they break the sound barrier deserves my respect.
LikeTheBuffalo THE OATMEAL

Dear Mental Floss, thank you for being what appears to be the only UA-cam channel or blog that doesn't push political agendas in 2016.
Anton Stefanov trump supporter? ;-)

Dogs also have handedness! My first dog was left handed and my current dog is right handed.
parrots have footedness.
My favourite animal is definitely the platypus.
My favourite videos are the ones with John in.
strange, i think pandas are cute but don't have much of an opinion about babies
Yeah same. I genuinely don't think babies are cute, but i do think animals that have those characteristics are cute. But animals that look too much like human babies, like baby primates or pigs... not so cute.
Left handed and awesome!!!
Can someone please give me a link to the dog study? (9:33) Thanks! :)
The description for #17. I applaud you good sir
Alex the Parrot was an African grey parrot so why would you use a photo of Macaw?
Maybe they were scared of some DMCA notice?
+
Why do you call it the salon???? Love this show!!!!
There is only one true best animal: polar bears. Big, adorable, and also absolutely terrifying.
A close second are mini pigs.
A platypus can kill you
...so can a polar bear.
Unidragosisisis A platypus can't tear you in half. :p
OgreSamanosuke it has venomous claw like things
Unidragosisisis And a polar bear has paws the size OF a platypus, lol.
But that's never been my point, polar bears are just cute while being some scary ass predators. Polar bear cubs are about the most adorable thing ever.
Maybe we should register bison too vote.
I bet bisons vote better than most people in my country.
Thiago Monteiro my dog can vote better than most people
I also bet the Bison discovered a 2 party system was inefficient long before we will.
Thiago Monteiro Yes, considering most of the country voted for Hillary.
I'm not lazy, I just conserving my energy
What about that giant anteater, Mirapi, who chose name for her pup as Pablo?
Foxes and rats are my favourite.
Alex was an African Grey! Your picture is inaccurate Mike.
Ryan White I'm pretty sure Mike doesn't edit the videos
re: #1 was Alex an African Grey parrot?
Never clicked on a video so fast
Love mental floss
I think the sound is a bit ood, isn´t it?
All of Mike's videos for the last several months are like this. I assume they are all from the same recording session and there was a faulty mic that they didn't realize until after the recordings were complete.
Question : Did flying reptiles like way back then use the "Flying V" formation?
If bison are able to vote, does that mean they have basic understanding of numbers? What if it was a tight vote with 1 or 2 bison margin, would the bison be able to notice that without counting? Does it suggest they have basic counting skills?
With-drar-els!
Foxes, rabbits, dolphins, lemurs, otters, and cats. Are my favorite animals.
Mike is sinister.....but also needs to put out more "Reasonably Sound" podcasts
Does Mike have his own channel?
Birds are living dinosaurs. They were winning the game since before humans evolved.
Zenn Exile except dinosaurs never existed. Look it ip
Kandula is 15 now and lives at the Oklahoma City Zoo.

Dogs'll eat anything, so it's impressive that they wouldn't take food from someone that was unhelpful to their owner

When he said "like myself" I thought he meant about the lounge thing for a second haha
Tongue*
Isn't that picture of a European robin? Are there cowbirds in Europe? Looks like Mental Floss doesn't always pick the correct stock photo ;)
You're giving squirrels too much credit, I heard they often forget where they buried the nuts and thus planting a seed that grows up into a tree. Even better!

You really need to work on the audio quality. It sounds like it was recorded on old Edison wax cylinder...
I don't buy into that "cute things remind us of babies" thing. I find many things cute. Human babies are not one of them, at all. The mere sight of them annoys me.
Alcix etc, you're a monster
If that makes me a monster. I'm cool with it.
Have a nice day.
Alcix you disgust me
Okay, thanks.
Alcix I think babies & toddlers are cute but I'm not a fan of being around them & have no desire to be a mother.
We cyclists learn a lot about aerodynamics from birds :D

But why is one side of the V longer than the other?
Because there are more bird on that side.
Hey Mike! :)
It's sad that an animal is more capable in democracy than humans.
I can't believe they did this video without a quarter in the Pork-Chop Party Fund. Opportunity Missed.
If we had a whole fleet of airplanes fly in a V would it save on fuel? assuming they don't crash and things
African or European?
I don't know
I don't know that. AHHHHHHHH *Being shot off of a bridge.
the real question is whether they could carry a horse along a piece of string
Lewis Oliver nope, just coconuts.
the horses in meaning of life were coconuts.
scientist are sometimes trying too hard just to get their name documented or recognize...

M. Strain Jr. yes. They deserve to die.....

This was so much more pleasurable to discuss when using squirrels.
Deez Nutz
No, it's actually great that you took it further like that. Pretty funny XD
I don't think pandas are very cute, imo. (Or most human babies, honestly.)
tymime that's ok
Wait so a bird moulting for six months every year is basically upset for half of its life?
Corgi is the best animal ever!!!! :D
I like Humpback Whales.
One day, they will save the Earth from artificial weather.

M. Strain Jr. I'm sure females fight too
you know there is a problem when bison can vote better than most people lol
I wonder how many bison voted to attend a street fighting tournament?
Does anyone else find this dude kind of spastic? Not in a mean or insulting way, he just seems like he's either excited, nervous, or hopped up on caffeine lol. Either way, it's a cool video
Didn't talk about the behavioral sink experiment. I guess it's not cute enough.
What? No mention of the ants on stilts?
Maybe european bisons should elect the new president of USA...
Deer and antelope do the same thing as bison... It's actually a very democratic means of deciding where the herd should go. Once >50 of the herd have signaled their direction of choice and agree, the herd moves.
"Unloaded swallow"
Hmmmm...
The longer a lion has its main the darker it gets when a lion loses a battle it loses its main and it has to grow back starting from blond
under 500 club lmao
Squirrels a rad.
Another Mike video, another reminder of the bad audio session he recorded all his recent videos using. Guess we can track how many episodes they record at a time based on this at least.
the cheeta is my favorite
AHHH! That is a european robin with the cowbird - an American species. No cowbird has ever encountered a european robin! shame shame
Will the bison be voting in the upcoming election?
Penguins and Stoats.
Can someone do a study on why this man is so charming?
CUBS WIN!
My Cornetto?
Man, why does Mike always get stuck using a mic hidden under a pile of socks?
It's almost as if humans are only slightly smarter animals.
What we all learned is that robins are jerks.
i had nearly the same haircut. doenst look great when you have so few hair left.
Andrew Duke that's rude. I think he looks great
Hello everybody))))))
#22 What if whales breach because they they know humans are watching and they just want to how off?
Alaskan Timber Wolves
7.30 XD
Where my fellow lefties at?
So what you're saying is that even Bison are better at democracy than some American elected officials ...
Well of course Kangaroos are left handed. They are upside down
tiamta Erm no. The Aborigines of that island like all other ancient cultures believe earth is FLAT
ugh i like mike but i hate it when he's on this show, all the recordings are terrible
It sounds like my speakers are buzzing while he talks...
Bird Life
All these pointless studies were paid for with my tax dollars.
Maybe I could keep my tax money and get health insurance for my kids?
First?!
Mike is a Kangaroo...
Direct Democracy dkm :')
Still don't like this guy, sorry. I'll listen for the script.
Kangaroo aren't mammals
