I don't understand the critics to this movie, really... Just because it isn't your average cold-murderer blood-bath kind of scary movie, doesn't mean it's bad. There was much more to it than just trying to scare the audience shitless with, mind you, the same elements that are so cliché, it's rare to see anything new. The story was better than a lot of horrors that are considered classics, and the visual effects are probably the best I've seen in an horror movie. For those who were watching waiting for jumpscares, though there's rarely any, the creepiness and bizareness make you cold everytime you hear the siren, and the disturbing characters and elements make you unable to look away.
Edit: wow it’s 2021 and here I am to add some insight into what I said 6 years ago lol. Back then I didn’t know the story of the game series, and now that I do I understand why some fans were upset with the adaptation leaving a lot of things out or included characters from other games in the series. BUT - I still don’t think the adaptation was bad nor did it leave anything unanswered. The monsters could’ve been better explained - the janitor was the only monster with a bg story, and I assumed the rest of them were also people who had harmed Alessa - but I also don’t think there was enough time in the movie to do that, hat’s also the reason why I think the whole story got adapted the way it did. The plot of the game is too complex to fit into a 2 hour movie without making it seem rushed. The ambience was a big part of why this movie was so good imo, and you couldn’t have that if Rose was to learn all the information the game offered.
Bruna Sampaio A lot of people were upset with it's lack of connection with the games and understanding what meant what. The big deal was that Pyramid Head was in the movie in the first place. He's an icon for the series, but he's ONLY a manifestation of James nightmare world, and James has no role in this movie, nor does any of his story's elements play through that would manifest the same monsters.
Just a lot of the criticism draws for the original fan base and the meanings behind the games and the fact that this film was a really big "Yo this was be really cool" and they just kind of slapped in what they thought was the edgiest and most iconic stuff.
***** Yes , it is pretty much what happened with the Resident Evil movies too.Both the adaptation and the fan service make it hard for game fans to really like it.If you are not involved with the game's background then you will enjoy the movie.

The game is better than the movie of course. BUT! This movie is the best movie I know of, based on a game. It was really well made, and it really did look like silent hill. I was impressed. The movie had it's flaws but, what doesn't?

Yeah, Silent Hill isn't just about the horror, it is about the emotions behind it, and everything that involves it... One of the things I really love is Akira Yamaoka's songs for the series, and the movie was just great for me... Congrats to all involved

Well, I'm surprised there are so many scenes in this "making of" that are not in the movie...
I loved the adaptation!!
On its own I can imagine why people who haven't played the game find this movie a little erratic and randomly gruesome, but as a fan, the whole film was very true to every aspect of the game; from lighting to camera work to characters to visual representations.
Es una adaptación extraordinaria, aunque no tenga nada q ver con la historia real del videojuego, esta adapación a la pelicula es fiel a la escencia del juego. Excelente trabajo.

For anyone wanting to play the game but feels it won't be scary because of the movie; please play the game. There's so much more to it and it's actually scary.
Some monsters were indeed taken from other silent hills, but I think it made the movie better. In this silent hill, for starters the main character is female and there's no cult of Samael. If you put it in context, the monsters of the game had a connection with Alessa, so they were not projections of Rose, but of Alessa. Pyramid head was kept as the executor, even in other games of the frenchise, and I liked that he appeared in the movie.

UFFF!!! CON ESA MOVIE NO PUDE DORMIR M DABA MUCH MIEDO PERO LAS CANCIONES D FONDO M DABAN PAVOR.... ESO ES HASTA LA FECHA!!! SUPER HISTORIA
That being said, this IS one of the betteer video game movies. Yeah, it's no masterpiece of a movie, but it's a HELL of a lot better than other game adaptations. It stuck to the story, the dialogue was pretty good, and the effects and cinematography are excellent. It's definitely worth a watch, which is FAR more than you can say for most other adaptations

While I appreciate the idea of "the love of a mother for her child" I still think they should've kept the main character as Harry, and they didn't need to change her name from Cheryl to Sharron. I think that the love of a father for his child is a bit more unexpected and touching. Especially since the main character for the next one is a woman, Heather.

I see what you did there (and I agree).
I guess they were going to for a more "emotional" and "shocking" approach by making it female: but if they were so close to the source material they should have known we would have loved to see their take on Harry. Instead they should have made a different story (not related to the games, either way there's little to no continuity between them: expect that they all take place in SH).
Nevertheless, I do like and acknowledge their efforts to create this.
Depends on how much of their own personal money they put into the film. If they're almost totally funding it out of their own pocket, the producer does indeed have control of the movie. If he/she isn't satisfied with what's going on, they can pull the funding, effectively killing the movie(unless the people making the movie can find someone else to throw some cash their way). But, most of the time, the producer is basically a salesman, trying to get studios to provide funding for a project.

Yes it is a nurse, and the one at 5:16 is the first monster that appeared. The child like-monsters. They made them black, changed the lighting and more.
Whenever i play these kinds of games, it always gives me a huge breather to reach any form of daylight.

Hear what?! o.O Don't start trying to scare me, I'm still scared. I went to my room...And I heard thumps and footsteps. I ran out, sitting in the lounge room and my brothers were watching Silent Hill. I just yelled out at them "Stop torturing me with this movie!"

It's not a terrible film, a very faithful adaptation of source material. Brilliant in its own ways, maybe not an excellent film, but a good film that is based on video game.

The movie was great, but it destroyed the fear of the game by switching from the real world to the dark world all the time. It didn't gave that sensation of you , trapped, in a dark world. That's the key on Silent HIll games.
The key to making a movie adaptation from a game is a director who is a gamer.

What is the monster at 0:24? Is that a nurse? And what is the monster at 5:16? It is shown few times throughout this video, but I do not remember seeing it in the movie, neither that particular scene. I remember only that in the beginning, she is pulled by some child-like monsters, not this big-mouth monster.

Because the directors of these movies have no association with the game developers.
If you wanna plan something BIG as making a movie out of a game, you gotta plan far ahead, wich basically means years, it's not as easy as just making a call and expecting a yes or no, because mostly, it's going to be a no, or a "Yeah i'm working on a sequel right now, so maybe in 2 years?"
It's interesting how there are some people who complain about lack of feminine representation in films, or how only in recent years there are more films with obvious feminine representation. And every time, I remember this film where most, if not all of the lead characters, are women! and this film came out in back in 2006! and if you read more into behind the scenes, the entire subplot with Christopher originally didn't exist in the script, and instead was suppose to appear only in the beginning and towards the end, which would've make this film with almost no male characters.
I went to an Anime con and someone was dressed like Pyramid head, and I had to get a picture with him. He was amazing with the acting skills... And his costume was EXACTLY like the one in the movie... I was terrified for three days after, cuz' then I saw one of the nurses. xP
I love this movie and actually think that it is the best video game to film adaptation yet. The production quality was so good, after seeing the sequel Silent Hill: Revelaton when it came out I was so disappointed! I wish Christophe Gans would have directed it :(
Think about it; a mom who do everything to find her daughter fits better. I don't say that a mother cares more about the child, but in a story like this, it does actually fits better with a woman

I think films about videogames should be done ONLY with the cooperation between the producer and the creator's of the game because only doing this you can get a film which lives up to the game. There are lots of game which have the potential to become great films because their plot is good, but this can only be if PRODUCERS AND GAME CREATORS work together.
Altough i think the movie was bit behind in what i expected, this is one of the few game based videos that i can say i really enjoyed, because it was true to the environment of the game.
Its only a shame they didnt copy the story in its entirety cuz that would have been epic

I appreciate all the work put into this movie, but I'm kind of sad to see people who don't play games never think of games as being emotional as other art forms. There are games who reach a level of masterpiece and many others provide a rich and deep story and characters. I wish one day non gamers accept this fact like the people who made this movie and stop judging us gamers. :\

This movie is really disturbing yet the the best ever made.
So, when you see a movie that's produced by, say, Quentin Tarantino, what that REALLY means is that Tarantino talked to the higher-ups at Lionsgate Films, or what have you, and convinced them to put down a few million $ so the movie could be made. Other than that, Tarantino may not have been involved in the actual making of the movie at all. But his name will be slapped on every poster and trailer because he's got star-power that'll draw more people in.
This actually turned out better than the sequel revelation!!

wow thinking that the fact that Harry Mason is a man is not important(as well as proper Lisa's death scene) just shows complete lack of grasp on what silent hill was, emotionally. The connection between a man and a child is completely different then between a mother and a child.

I love the camera work on this movie and the music since it's so similar to the games. It's all in all the best Video game movie I've ever seen but the ending is lacking.

Well there are many different games of silent hill. Most of them have some what of a different story than each other but they are still in the same area "Silent Hill". So it's fine that this movie her woman is searching for her daughter, it's a different story but they are still in the Silent Hill area

La película no esta mal pero se echa de menos a Harry Mason, Cheril, James y Henry. De todas maneras esta película no a profanado el juego... por ejemplo como cuando sacaron la película de super mario bros o bola de dragon... esta película yo personalmente le pongo un 8, ojala hagan la segunda parte.

que tiene que ver?!, primero que tu comentario no es coherente, ya que señalas que los monstruos son los de homecoming ( que vino mucho despues de la pelicula) asi que serian los productores de homecoming los que tomaron varios elementos de la pelicula y ALGUNOS MONSTRUOS, no los culpo, el diseño y ambiente de la pelicula fue excelente, y no creo que haya sido mala solo porque cambiaron al protagonista, no puede ser igual al juego 100%, me parece EN MI OPINION que hicieron un buen trabajo.

i watched this in my room in the dark (not at night, just with a blanket over my window but it was still dark) in my room by myself. I havent played the game, and i didnt think the movies was scary
