- "As the World Turns" and "THE EDGE OF NIGHT" connection featuring "Days Of Our Lives" Francis Reid who played the role of Nancy's Karr's mother ROSE POLLOCK #2...
On "EDGE" in 1956, Mark Rydell played WALT JOHNSON.
And Rosemary Prinz originated the role of GERRY McGRATH #1 on "EDGE" in 1964...
Most of us late Baby Booomers/Generation Jones(es) were very young and had never even heard of "THE EDGE OF NIGHT" or "As the World Turns" until 1969-70 and EMILY PRAGER played LAURIE ANN KARR and CHRISTOPHER NORRIS was Sarah-Louise Capice. A boyhood scene/memory I have never forgotten for some strange reason was when Sarah-Louise received her first kiss from Calvin Brenner (GLENN SCOTT)...
Rosemary Prinz is still with us. She's 92. ❤
The memories these old soap operas bring back..... my mom watched these all the time in the 60s. That's what brought me here, to bring back memories of her. :( And happier times......
Me too, Diana.
Same
M😊😊 5:58 😅
Just hearing the Organ music reminds me of the days my Mom who watched everyday, I was still in school so missed them, no dvds to tape until later in the years....that was Great, I taped the shows I missed, by that time I was working....so nice to see some of the original actors still there.....Thank You, for all the clips...I will be watching, now I'm hooked again....
I loved this soap opera was crushed when it was canceled. I would watch with mom both grandmas, great grandma grandmother and aunts these would be the folks who would watch you during school holidays/breaks
@rcwilcots: I wonder how they'd feel about all the gay subplots in ATWT's later years!
alot of these soap operas i was way too young, but classics soaps give a breath of fresh air, with the soaps that is shown today. ladies were classy beauties, and men were handsome.
Back when soaps ruled the airways. World Turns were at the head of the class. It was unmissable by all accounts of the time.
I remember ATWT and Penny/Jeff from before starting school. When I entered school, I caught up on holidays and found that the plot had barely moved. Miss watching it with Mom and Dad - Dad had his own business and would schedule his lunch break in order to watch this.
Carol Reed was a singer and a TV weathercaster in New York City. I've remembered the line she said toward the end of the Nabisco Sugar Honey Grahams commercial for more than 60 years: "Something tells me that I'm going to have to make another batch..."
Great memories. Reminded me of when I’d stay with my great grandmother. She watched all the Soaps but As The World Turns was her favorite, and as a little girl I’d watch it with her. Thanks for the Memories.
Were you watching ATWT that day that Cronkite first broke in to announce that Kennedy was shot?
I went to look up Rosemary Prinz after watching this, and her Wikipedia article says that she died today….guess that’s why these old videos showed up. Rest in peace….
As of 10/13/25 she’s still alive!
The organ music is priceless ❤
Great!, Remember Penny, Jeff, Chris, Dr. Cassin so well. An added bonus of Frances Reid playing Jeff’s mom! Love the organ music in the background. I’d love to see all of these again. MArk Rydell was a good actor with gravitas even then. Not surprising he became such a successful producer in Hollywood.
omg Francis Reid! She's been royal forever.
Those are the best classics soap operas ever.i was little done wasn't born yet. But the classic soaps are better what is shown. Today.
On the Joy commercial, the great Jean VanderPyl slipped into her Wilma Flintstone voice. That's soooooo cute.
Love the organ.
Those were the days!
I can’t stand the organ! 😌
I was very little but I remember Penny. She was a super star in soaps. My mom named my sister Penny because of ATWT.
I love the organ music!
Happy 63rd Anniversary As The World Turns! April 2, 1956
And to the edge of night!
THE WORLD WAS MUCH LOVING BACK THEN..... MUCH SAFER.....
Ummmmmm.....no. Korean War, Vietnam War, black subjugation, KKK, child abuse running rampant, etc. People were MEANER then.
Gotta luv the products from yesteryear, that we still see on the shelves today.
Rest In Peace Chris Hughes.
This couple was great!
search for tomorror, i was not even yet, and these soap opears, i was way too young. great soap opears are the best.
Thanks. Boy, he was quite 'dramatic' in his acting style from the various clips Ive seen of the actor, not afraid to cry, whine, be over the top - never dull tho.
That's Jean Vanderpyl (longtime cartoon voice of Wilma Flintstone) as "Grace" in the Joy commercial. She started playing Wilma in 1960.
Penny, Lisa, and Ellen made this soap for years. Later, I added Kim to the list. In the last years, everything changed.
Oh yes you are so right.
Nat Polen was an important figure during ATWT's first decade as Doug Cassen, a prominent doctor and Ellen's stepfather.
Cast List yes he was
And was on One Life to Live for many years as well
And the 2nd (after Robert Milli) Dr Jim Craig) on One Life to Live [1969 to his passing]!👍
In a few short years she'd be the sweet Alice Horton on Days Of Our Lives.
Happy Anniversary As the World Turn. This Grace character is Alice Horton from,Days of ourLives.
Dr. Bob, Don Hastings was also on Edge before World. Both soaps started April 2nd, 1956 as the first half hour TV soaps. I think you mean Scott Glenn. :) I remember the Capices were beside themselves over Sarah's involvement with Calvin. Years ago I worked with Christopher Norris on Another World and she was trying to track down Emily Prager. Prager went on to be a writer and at that time was teaching at NYU. The biggest shock I ever got watching soaps (next to Malcolm Thomas being stabbed in the back with a pair of scissors on Edge) was the Keith Whitney/Jonah reveal on Edge.
Wow….never knew Alice Horton 'Frances Reid' could play a bitchy role like she did Grace lol. Frances will always be the sweet loving Alice from Days to me.
Gary Woods II I love her accent. She definitely has a Southern Drawl.
Pre-Alice Horton.
Does anyone notice how the doctor has a cigarette in his hand? My, how times have changed.
One of the commercials was also on the 11/22/1963 episode of this soap.
Folgers Coffee. When Kennedy was shot.
I even like the ads back then
As Fred Flintstone: "WILLLMAAA?!"
Thanks. I'd never seen this before. I really enjoyed seeing another side of Frances Reid. She was great in this bitchier role. I always enjoy getting to see more of Chris or Penny or Jeff. I guess Irna Philips saw San Diego as a den of moral iniquity?
K Pryde Don't you usually hear an organ every time someone mentions San Diego? I do.
Agree like her in this meatier role.
I had no idea Frances replayed Rose Pollock I think another actress replaced her much later on I guess when she got Days of Our Lives interesting to see these characters in black and white...
Comet is still the best!
Is the woman in the Joy commercial the voice of Wilma Flintstone? I distinctly heard Wilma's voice when she said Betty, who happens to be Wilma's bestie btw, lol
Mariell Clement It sure sounds like her
Oh! Look at those hands. I’m sold!!😂😂😂
It is. Jean VanderPyl was Mrs. Dawson in the Joy commercials before she became Wilma Flintstone
Christopher Norris also is on Trapper John MD for a lot of years I wonder what happened to her and what she's doing now that's always thought she was pretty cool as Sarah Louise
"I guess Irna Philips saw San Diego as a den of moral iniquity?" That's funny, CarlD2...I laughed when I heard the sinister organ after Grace or maybe it was Chris mention San Diego...where I guess Jeff's fall from grace began in San Diego, a den of iniquity, w/the bottle...
San Diego (in 1960) was known as the most "staid" major city in California. The ATWT writers kind of blew it here with the idea that "San Diego" (cue the dramatic organ key!) sent Jeff along on that "garden path" to ruination via his alcoholism. San Francisco would have been the better choice to make the point of Jeff's "birthing" of uncontrolled self-indulgence - leading to wrack and ruin! (I lived in San Francisco for some years and saw it all!) LOL! Cheers to all.
In those days the heroes and heroines of soaps were middle-aged.
No, they just looked it…Rosemary Prinz was barely 30 here.
Comet has always been a great cleanser. But often it was too abrasive for many surfaces and would strip the finish. If we all had stainless steel sinks it would have been perfect.
Reminds me of being home from school when I was sick, back when soap operas (and commercials) sounded and looked like this. I always wondered why anyone watched these boring programs.
I love the clothes back then
Wasn't that the actress who.ess Alice Horton on Days Of zour Lives? In New York too.
What , wait a minute not Mrs H , not Alice Horton, Frances Reid, I thought she grew up on Days of Our Lives, it’s just funny seeing her on a different soap opera lol
So San Diego was just as classy then as now, eh? 😂
You forgot Don Hastings (Jack Lane, EON/Bob, ATWT).
Alison Horton from days
Mark Rydell was a bad influence on Jack Lane back in 1956 (EoN connection). A treat to see Frances Reid as a manipulative mother-in-law! LOL
what is the episode number.
13:49- "Sam Levenson welcomes Tony Bennett and George Jessel to 'CELEBRITY TALENT SCOUTS', tonight on the CBS Television Network." s3-eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/centaur-wp/creativereview/prod/content/uploads/2011/03/eye-logo.jpg
**insert 30 second station break here**
What was wrong with Jeff??
Thats alice horton
I don’t remember Penny Hughes.
Penny was the show's heroine during the 1950s and most of the '60s.
This was how soap operas
Were when I was a kid
The orgen playing in the back ground these old soaps are a riot to watch now.
So jeff became an alcoholic
After visiting San Diago
Geez what is so bad there
To make him become an
Alcoholic? To many pot smoking
Beatniks and too much freedom
Oh no that's San Francisco
LOLLOL LOLLOL LOLLOL LOLLOL
Rosemary Prinz was a typical soap opera heroine . She here was as thin as Melba Toast .
I believe he was an alcoholic...
I don't recall San Diego being any kind of Den of Iniquity. To hear them talk, it sounds like Sodom and Gemmorah. Hmm!
It's because he never found Carmen.
What date and year was this episode made?
Sometime around 1960 or '61. The Comet commercial shows a 1959 Ford convertible in the opening scene, and the refrigerator appears to be a single-door Frigidaire from about 1959
jeff did not have a chance! Mom used to coddling him and treating him like a baby
@f
Whaddya get when you put a bird in a blender?
Shredded Tweet.
LOL
MrUhwoody I think shredded "tweet "
