Eastern cedar trees can rot from the center as they age because of a fungal infection called heart rot. This type of rot usually sets in through an open wound on the tree, such as a broken limb or insect damage, and slowly progresses towards the center of the tree. As the fungus grows, it weakens the tree's heartwood, making it more susceptible to insect infestations and weather damage. Additionally, the heartwood of cedar trees tends to be softer than the outer layers, which makes it easier for fungi to establish and grow. Over time, the center of the tree may completely rot away, leaving only a hollow shell of the original tree.
I have 75 acres outside of Murfreesboro that is full of cedar and ash. Do you have a recommendation on what size sawmill from woodmizer? Cedars are 6-24" in width and ash is 14-30".
Nathan, I guarantee Bruno in his own way will let all that he loves, trusts and is involved with throughout his day that he was able to operate Dad's heavy machinery!! He also now has yet another wonderful memory with his loving Dad. I would betcha when he looks at you there is the look of someone that sees his hero. God bless you Nathan. You enrich your young man's life in so many ways, and in doing so enrich your own life, and we only see the tip of the iceberg. May you and your family continue to be abundantly blessed. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.
I'm an old (80 yrs) city slicker. Txs for introducing me to a life and a profession unknown to me before. Few folks find something they love doing for a living. You are fortunate. Nice film editing; nice vocal delivery; both makes for an interesting clip. Looking forward to you hitting those cedar logs. Txs for sharing.
In the UK it is normal for the centre of old trees to be hollow. This reduces the weight of the tree and makes it more resilient in a storm. As I am sure you are aware, the strength of a bar is mostly in the outer edge. We had a bad storm a while back that flattened whole woods of oak. They were all middle-aged, big but not hollow. The older oaks that were hollow survived fine.
Hello from England, Nathan. I just found your channel. The thing that came across was the calm, thoughtful, way that you carry out your work. You speak clearly, explaining things so we understand exactly what you mean. In England, near Cambridge, we have one or two huge old oak trees, hundreds of years old. You would need a bigger sawmill to saw them up, I bet ! Nearby there is part of an Oak tree that was, supposedly, planted by King Henry the 8th, ( yes, the one who had 8 wives!). It still stands there, although the branches and trunk above about 20 feet have been removed. Keep up your great videos, very interesting.
Aww, my favorite video of Bruno🤗 I was just cheering him on 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 good job Bruno! So sweet the way he was looking at you for guidance, ya got a good boy there Nathan. Looks like with those loads of logs you will be busy for a bit.
HEY BRUNO GREAT JOB operating the Track Steer today, you will get a job with your Dad when training is over. Thanks for sharing with us Nathan keep up the great videos and including Bruno too. Fred.
Nathan you might have teeth worries but you should be proud of the quality of your videos man so there's nothing to worry about your evolution of production. p:s The sharing of you teaching Bruno was just .......beautiful. Thank you from Australia
Probably the yard sale is the change the sellers life! We all need less stuff. Except a sawyer- they always need a track loader! Good for you- you’re the hardest working man on UA-cam! Cheers! Jeff
Hey Nathan, I just watched a video from Smoky Mountain Outpost, where he mentioned you and said to thank you for the material he used to rebuild the handle of his chisel... So thank you... Thanks to you is how I found Smoky Mountain Outpost and Custom Sawyer... It just goes to show that good people have good friends.
Wooo whoo!! Look at Bruno learning to operate the Kato! Good job, Bruno!! Good on you, Nathan, for taking the time to give your boy some lessons! Can't wait to hear the scoop on the "life changing yard sale"! 😂😂
What a shot at the beginning of your video. What a beautiful truck of cedar logs. Can't wait to see you cut them. Good job Bruno, you'll be out there before long helping your dad.
Great Job Bruno!!! Is Bruno in any sports...looks he is going tall like his Dad!!! I like to see him in football uniform playing line backer, defense tackle or defense end.... I bet he would good at it!!! Defense is the fun side of the game.... hitting at full speed!!! Yahooooooooo!!!!!!
I like that. Life changing yard sale. Sounds a bit like philosophy. Like, Life altering trauma, or Tragic miracle, anyway....Love the channel. Please keep up the great work.
You better watch out, Bruno figures out that skid steer. He could run that thing as smooth as butter. Good looking stack of lumber. Be careful and take care.
Most likely I have missed it in the comments but just on the outside chance no one has mentioned it you might think about cutting a section of the metal out where you load the logs into the mill and making a door that can be hinged for opening while milling or closing at the end of the day. Thanks for the videos.
The new "Kato" is awesome equipment, I would imagine with the flail mower or the land shark you could drive long ways thru the gullies up near the road , I try to never miss an episode thank you Nathan Tony
always great content, been sharing your site with friends in WV. and CA...my buddy even recognized his Sawyer at the big shindig you posted recently....cheers from Central Florida, Paul
Looked like a very good delivery day with all those logs Nathan. Have you ever thought of storing your logs on wooden 'runners' or whatever they are called? I just wondered if it would keep them in better condition when left out for very long periods of time. Just a thought that I realise may not be very practical & you probably thought about it a long time ago. Cheers, Don from South Australia
Hello Nathan, great to see father and son learning / teaching. Nathan, could you please go over the difference's between white versus red oak, other that color. For those wondering about my background, I'm just a metal worker, never played with wood, hence the question. Seems to be a big difference, I'm just clue-less as to the who, what, why etc. Love that new skid / track loader you got. Seems to be quite the work horse.
I'm neither a woodworker nor a metal worker, but my dad's place in Virginia has about a dozen oak species (both red and white) on it and so I've looked into your exact question. Red and white are broad categories that each contain many species (and to make things even more difficult, not all oak species fit into them). But in terms of identification, red oak leaves have pointy tips (they look somewhat similar to map[e leaves) and white oak leaves have rounded lobes (they remind me a bit of those fat-fingered old-timey baseball gloves). In use, both are strong and tough and so are good for flooring, framing, etc , but white oak is extremely rot resistant and red oak really isn't rot-resistant at all. That's because the vessels that transport the sap in white oaks have, essentially, little trap doors or gate valves in them that help prevent the lumber from absorbing dampness and also physically block the funguses that cause wood to rot. Red oaks don't have those "gate valves" and so will readily absorb moisture from damp soil and are easy for fungus to penetrate. White oak is considered great for boat-building and exposed decking for this reason, and red oak is really best used indoors/in protected environments. Red oak does exhibit a reddish color when you first cut it, but that quickly fades and it and white oak look very similar once the lumber is dried.
@@timheffernan8887 Thank you so much for this reply. I never would've guessed that such a difference between what I would call "kissing-cousins" could be so different. Again thank you for taking the time to answer my question. You hit it out of the park with your answer. Your awesome Tim.
I have a photo of a large Western Red Cedar that also had rot in the center. However the small end of this log measured 14’ across. Couldn’t find a way send it to you.
Finally got to watch this again on the big screen. Still waiting on the follow up #lifechanging YARD SALE. Hope dental work is all wrapped up soon. No fun 🇺🇸🤠🙏
Life changing for those unloading their junk. Hope you find some treasures. No way would I do a 50-50 split anymore. I get two thirds or it's not happening.
FYI, Western Red Cedar does the same thing. It is like gold here in Washington, everybody wants it but you definitely need to be careful when buying the logs.
I learned on a Fordson Super Major in the 60s with a single up down muckfork and a spring loaded gravity tip... the good old days .... Bruno will ill do just fine with a couple of hours under his belt!
Nathan I had other plans for this weekend but if that is a LIFE CHANGING yard sale I might need to come out the and check it out myself. I live in Texas so it will take about a day to drive over there. Man I hope they have some stuff to change my life for the better.!! Hey I'm kidding. My life is ok just as it is without me making a two day round trip to check out the sale. I do wish you luck though since your a little closer than me.
In Alaska we have Western Red Cedar and they rot like that also. They tend to be larger before they start rotting. Same thing though, once they hit a certain size and age they seem to just rot away from the inside out. Loved the video.
I once went to a yard sale just because the sign said “crap you need sale.” I thought whelp they have crap I need apparently and they sure did, found some really good tools.
Thank you for another great video! I'm wondering if the life being changed by that yard sale was the life of the person whose yard sale it was? (or was there indeed something really interesting on offer - enquiring minds need to know!)
I absolutely Love seeing and commend You for involving Bruno like that! Well Done Nathan, well done!
Watching you with your son always reminds me how much I love my child.
Appreciate you

We have the same hollowing problem with larger locust in NY. Hard to imagine with a tree that lasts 20 or 30 years in the ground as a fence post.
Nearly complete hollowing of older Water Oaks and Pin Oaks is pretty common throughout SE Louisiana.
Awesome job Bruno. You'll be working with your dad in no time
You’re a good man, Nathan. And a great dad. Love seeing Bruno in your videos. God bless !
thanks for watching
I need to head down there for that lifechanging yard sale
Come on down
Nathan, the time and calm training you give to Bruno is a testament to being a great father!!!!
Bruno is likely to be the best equipment operator in the county. Young folks learn things like that a lot faster than the rest of us.
Yay Bruno! Won't be long and he'll be helping dad. Looking forward to seeing the "new" Nathan after that life changing yard sale.😊
Really like your videos. You do a great job with content and editing.
I appreciate that!

The Smile on your Son's face say's it all !!! Love your videos and your down home country style!!! God Bless to you and your family!!!!

I love the rotted cedar. It would make some beautiful coffee and end tables with a glass top. Or fill in voids with resin.

you'll have to share some footage of the yard sale so we know what we missed
Will do

Way to go Bruno! Good stuff Nathan.
thanks for watching
Nice intro!
Also, I love your music choices!
Wow, Nathan. That is a might fine load of cedar. I can almost smell it all the way down here in Florida.
thanks for watching
in our part of the country where Western Red Cedar grows, we call that stuff with the rot in it, Pecky Cedar and it is highly sought after
Same thing with western red cedar
Large trees usually cut to roof shakes
Can't wait to see that ambrosia sawn up.
Like Bruno in the Videos. He's part of the Milling team and a good young man.
thanks for watching
I have a photo of a large Western Red Cedar that also had rot in the center. However the small end of this log measured 14’ across. Couldn’t find a way send it to you.
I gotta ask..... How much do you like the cab on your new toy? Wasnt sure if you were happy with it.....
Life changing ... You say ... Can I come too? 😂😊

I envy your new skidsteer. Looks fantastic! Do you like the cab?

We get a similar rot in western reds in the pnw. We call it Pencil rot, or brown pocket rot.
Nathan I had other plans for this weekend but if that is a LIFE CHANGING yard sale I might need to come out the and check it out myself. I live in Texas so it will take about a day to drive over there. Man I hope they have some stuff to change my life for the better.!!

We have same issue here in N GA
By the time I saw the log, it is full of carpenter ants
Rare to get a nice cedar.
thanks for watching
hi there nice logs , john
I have a skid steer with tracks and I think you will find wheels cut up the ground less.
In Alaska we have Western Red Cedar and they rot like that also. They tend to be larger before they start rotting. Same thing though, once they hit a certain size and age they seem to just rot away from the inside out. Loved the video.
I just drove home to Ohio, from Gainsboro Tennessee... Are you any where near it? I'm mesmerized by your milling machine..great video.. thank you.
I once went to a yard sale just because the sign said “crap you need sale.” I thought whelp they have crap I need apparently and they sure did, found some really good tools.

Just curious if the track loader has a door for the cab?
“Life changing yard sale” 😂😂😂
