Joe Strummer defending Topper

- The Clash front man Joe Strummer leaping to the defence of Toper Headon when the latter was allegedly suffering heroin withdrawal on tour. A journalist asks about Topper throwing up and typical of Joe this causes him to unleash on the hapless journalist.
I have pinned a pretty bold claim from Rogue Trader, claiming Joe was a fraud and the band was manufactured. Personally I can't subscribe to that view, as it is just a little too 'out there' for me. But that's just my own opinion and I'd love to hear what others think.
Keep i respectful though folks.
This is a re-post with higher volume and captions of a clip uploaded by Jukka Jalava. I do not own the clip, but I claim fair use for educational and historic purposes.
John Mellor was a complete fake phony playing a role for the cameras. Once there was no cameras around he reverted back to his posh rp accent and private school persona. It was all a big act to subvert the working class youth with left wing commie drivel. The whole band was fake, completely manufactured for the very start.
I've got to tell you, this is a very bold claim. I was a young teen, just getting into bands, and was down in London through all this period and never once heard this mentioned. I pinned your comment, so others can weight in. Keep it respectful though. Has anyone else heard something similar?
he would piss all over you, cunt
I find this to be a very simplistic view purely aimed at dismissing John Mellor/Joe Strummer and The Clash entirely. I agree they had many contradictions at play and I think that is part of what destroyed the band in the end. I actually have never heard any such claims that Joe would use a posh accent or "private school persona" when the cameras were off. But it's no secret he came from a more well-off background than he wanted people to know. I wouldn't consider being dumped off at boarding school from the age of 9 to be a great way of growing up, though.
“What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.” - Christopher Hitchens
There is a ring of truth in some of that. Keith Levine backed up some of this in a very good interview about the scene back then. Joe's Redemption song biography also hints at him being a bit ruthless, by dumping people whilst chasing stardom. The Clash's first album was Sex Pistols copycat but hinting positively at a little of what came later, deny=liar, etc. Allegedly, he was a Springsteen fan which by their high watermark of London Calling is kinda where he was shooting for. I remember reading a review in The NME of that albums launch and some wit shouted "The New Rolling Stones are on tonight". Despite all his good traits and undoubted legacy, he was the one who fucked the band in the end, thinking it was all about him........
Good for him sticking up for his friend. I’ve been through opiate withdrawals and it’s a living nightmare. Very glad to be done with those. Miss ya Joe❤️
Jessica Meloy Yes that’s great Joe is my sweet my love always. He means a lot to me. 😊😍😘💗💋💕
Jessica Meloy He lives on never dies
I have too, it's unbearable.
Holy shit, Joe could be so intimidating. I love it.
He knew when to back off as well. When to provide his antagonist with a dignified way out. It's a rare skill.
Strummer didn't like violence and wasn't prone to throwing down physically. But he was never afraid to deliver a powerful tell-off.

The worlds greatest front man standing up for the worlds greatest drummer...what goes around...!
I like how British musicians used to interact with British press. I watch those press conferences.
I really love Joe and no wonder why he means a lot to me. So very happy to see how Joe stood up for Topper. 😘😍😊
There was an American tv show called "Hill Street Blues" about police officers in Los Angeles and one of the subplots was an older sergeant who took a liking to a junkie and tried with all his might to get him to stay straight. And after he thought the guy was finally sober for good, a couple officers brought him into the station, wasted on heroin and the sergeant said to no one in particular, "Junkies will always break your heart."
The friend we all have who we would die for, but deep down know they are going to die despite our love. Thank God Topper is clean today. RIP Joe.
topper was one of the great drummers of that era, and i'm not even a drummer! truly bad ass with the most tastefully perfect fills and pickups. man! joe was a class act all the way. he's sorely missed, of all the ones we've lost...
Joe Strummer was the man. He is missed by fans.
I am so proud of Mr. Strummer!!!!
I wish i had one friend like this...
Get out of the house. Volunteer. Join a silly club. You'll be ok. Have a decent spring!
@@Alsatiagent I have zero social skills. 😂
Discovered the clash in 1978,late I know, but followed them until the end and even Joe Strummer's solo efforts.I loved and respected him.I still do.My forever hero.
78 wasn't late at all. I don't believe you could find a Clash record or hear them on the radio until 79. They didn't break in America until the single I fought the law.
@@johncooper7663 Thanks,John. But at that time in new jersey there was a college radio station I used to listen to,WFMU.I'm not sure if it's still operating but it changed my teenage life. This band spoke to me.Rare.I love them.
@@darrylwiggins4799 Only one station in Detroit played the Clash, fm 106 w4, a mainly rock station. Around 81 we finally got a new wave, punk station, WABX.
Joe was standing by his band mate but would have been really pissed off with him as Topper was a heavy heroin addict and Joe was very anti drugs, hence sacking him soon afterwards.
wot,, joe smoked weed, took lsd, probably, other drugs,, in his hey day,,its a fact,, on a youtube clip, in a snooker hall, he goes on about, taking pill,s to a journalist, who brought up the subject,, a think he slowed down on drugs later on,, as he mentioned in a clip,, when introducing his new band members, who replaced, mick jones, and topper,,,drugs in the music business, comes with the whole package,, especially, the 60,s,70,s,and 80,s, as we all no, maybe with exception of maybe 10 percent, who did,nt.
Watch a Clash documentary. He used plenty. Mostly weed and pills. He claimed to be against them when they formed The Clash II without Mick and Topper as a diss to them.
Joe explained that they fired Topper because his opiate use disorder was messing up his drumming. He wondered aloud how jazz greats pulled it off when on the drums because for rock and roll the band needed precision.
@@davenewcombe2305 I think he was mainly opposed to heroin use: check the lyrics to _Deny_ . But yeah, it's a little bit hypocritical, to simply draw the line at heroin and then use the rest.
One of a kind Joe was. But the future is still unwritten, thankfully.
Love Joe Strummer!!
We need you back Uncle Joe.
Haha you got told Mr journalist
Esa es la Actitud!
The delivery was unexpectedly comical, ngl. Something about brits and their insults get me.
Me gustaría entender lo q dice , igual se nota q está r bardeando al periodista.grande Joe ,QEPD.
I been where tropper was then. I know that look well. Good for strummer
Same.
"The day the music really died"....Bit of drivel that. As much as I like The Clash, Mick was the musical force and he's still ticking
Mick wrote the hooks. He's an incredible songwriter
Went to see him with B.A.D. when they first formed. They were awesome.
Well done Joe.
Blessed are the Peaceniks.
GANGSTER AF
joe stuck up for topper,,good on him,,however he slept with toppers girlfriend one nite, after they had an argument,,no no!!!
Wait, really?
@@Sam-kg3uf i think that was the early clash days between give em enough rope and london calling

Love Them !!
He was so posh.
Toppers a million miles away!!?? Doesn't look like he,s suffering from heroin withdrawl to me like!!!???
He's starting to withdraw, his eyes are like polka dots not pinned. Just did an 10 hour flight with no gear. He was sick. Hence why he threw up. If you know you know, if you don't you don't
Love h!!
Coupla fannies!
Pretty weak really.
One turning up at a presser off your face is plain stupid.
Two trying to claim he is sick is very stupid.
They were all on drugs.
I dont believe you know what you are on about so i wont listen to your pointless comments
Did anyone notice the junkyard dog Paul.. ready to jump... Don't forget he was a fighter before joining the group..
Good one mate fuck them all Joe Rip old friend forever in my heart sleep tight sweet prince
