So my husband is a pretty hard core prepper, as in we have enough mres, dry goods, and and survival food to feed our family for a year, we are 80% off grid and produce about 75% of our food, we are all set to survive like this, people have always made fun but now those same ppl are calling and texting for advice. I think it's funny kinda like the Aesop's fable The Ant and The Grasshopper, but we will help Grasshopper out

My attitude towards people who laugh at peppers is this: If you're not willing to help me prepare, don't think you're going to help me eat the food God gave me the foresight to store up. I agree! Watching this family gives me hope for the next generation. My granddaughter is 9 and has no idea what hunger is. I'm grateful for that. My mother died of a drug overdose when I was 5 and my brother was 8. At 5 years old, I weighed 22lbs because mom was sick and dad worked out of town as an electrician. I don't eat oatmeal to this day because of those first 5 years. If I wanted it hot, my brother used hot tap water, and if I wanted it cold, he used cold tap water. That was in the 70's before instant oatmeal! LOL If he fed me breakfast, went to school in my nightgown. If he got me dressed, I went to school hungry.

The kids today don't get it but then again my grand parents were products of the depression and probably thought the same about me. The generation that laughs at "preppers" have never been really hungry. The soup line kind of hungry. You won't hear someone who survived the Great Depression talking about peppers that way! My motivation for having food in my house is remembering a time in my life where I went hungry. If you have to make the decision that if you and your child both eat tonight, one of you won't eat tomorrow, you make sure you're never in that situation again!

I've never laughed at preppers. I've never known a day of hunger. Things were tight growing up. So my parents taught me how to live off the land. I am trying to teach my friends how to stretch the food they have on hand. How to make simple meals and such. I have actually met people who did not know how to boil an egg. I got in the habit of doing that sort of thing every hurricane season -- I make sure we have foodstuff, paper goods, flashlights, candles, etc. on hand to hold us over for a month or so. Matter of fact, most of the time, I replenish what I use up so there's always something on hand. Just in case! It never hurts to be prepared!! I'm in that older set (60's) and I've been telling my son for years that we need to keep some food stocked, especially since we live up north where we can get snowed in. I've gradually built up some in the pantry but it wasn't hardcore, even though I had that mindset. I've lived through too many storms, floods, and hurricanes to not know to stock up for bad seasons. I warned friends to "thicken" their pantry back in mid Jan, only a few didn't laugh. Now half are asking for advice on how to make substitutions to fit what they do have, and the other half are cussing "preppers" for taking all the groceries. I tell them, nope...preppers had their stuff before everyone else panicked and cleared the shelves. Their own faults. Will help those I can, where I can, but they should have listened.

I heard there are only about 195,000 ventilators in the USA. For average use that is enough (sometimes to many). There are only so many ICU beds which people with the Corona virus have to be isolated in and if bad enough have to be put on a ventilator. If it would get bad enough (through the spread of public venues) there would not be enough of beds or ventilators. That's why a lot of governors have restricted public venues to a certain number of people. In Illinois it is restricted to 150 people as of today, 3/12. All concerts, etc are cancelled until further notice. Many nursing home and hospitals are now not allowing visitors and many colleges are closing for now. In Seattle 19 seniors died from Corona virus in 1 nursing home. 30% of people with the virus don't show any symptoms and never get sick but spread the disease.

Well that is something I haven't run into. EVERYONE is prepping for this and I haven't seen anyone judge. What I would be concerned about is maybe that old lady didn't have the money to do what you and many are doing and that's why she was defensive about it (SSI checks come on the 1st and this is nearing the end of the month, think about it). I went down the street to where I know an elderly lady lives alone and asked her if she needs help getting anything or needs any food. Yeah, that reaction wasn't normal, so there was something else going on with her. Sure preppers get judged and mocked, during times that are good, (and they shouldn't, of course) but people aren't judging people now unless they're HOARDING too much. It's those that prepped during the stable times that we all need to thank because they aren't contributing to the shelves getting empty right now.

this is awakening many in my family line. They laughed at me for canning and putting up and storing what we can on a fixed budget. I am a single parent for many years not by choice but through it all God is good. I am learning also how my pantry has helped feed a single mom with 2 kids in the big city. I am trying to teach my son and his family more. My other son and his family prep a little bit better.

I'm 60, and I'm prepared for the most part; just need to pick up more food for the animals, which will be done next week. It's crazy for people to think this is going to disappear overnight, and that they don't need to get extra medication, food, water...the list goes on, to cover at minimum 3 months. I have children that sound like that old woman, it's frightening to think they are willing to put their family's and their own well being at risk.

I learned "prepping" from my dad, who is now in his 90's. He has a tractor trailer full of food, water, bedding, lanterns, kerosene, clothes, etc., etc. He tries to have enough on hand to last a year. I'm not "that" prepared, but I could easily last a couple months, mostly because I don't like going to town. I used to only go to town 6 times a year, now I live close to town (15 miles) and usually go to town twice a month. I have 5 gallon buckets full of rice and pinto beans. I drink a couple gallons of cranberry juice a month (because I like it) and rinse the plastic jugs out and fill them with water. So I have enough water for myself and my dog to drink for a couple months if the electricity goes out (so I can't get water out of the well.) And live 15 second walk from a river, so if push comes to shove I can filter and boil river water to drink, and can always catch fish and crawdad to eat. I'm not really a hard core prepper.. I just don't like going to town.

Yes! I went to Walmart (California) for a few things, older couple in front of me bragging to clerk "I'm not scared of this CV." Then proceed to buy case of cigarettes. What?! I am truly baffled by people's lack of preparedness, knowledge, or will to live. The only thing I can surmise is, we have been living in too golden a time and it's warped people.

I live in San Francisco bay area about 20 miles south of SF. I went shopping just for few items at 2 grocery stores. I was surprised at the large crowds and long lines. A lady in front of me in one store had a shopping cart that was filled to the brim and she kept going back into the store while I nudged her cart forward for her in line. When she was done, she apologized to me about how much she was buying and I told her no problem, she has the right to buy as much as she wants. She was also wearing gloves, so some people are scared. I am a scientist who worked in drug discovery on infectious disease research in both bacterial and viruses so I did some reading on Coronavirus from scientific literature. I also watch the growth rate of infection. I am not as concerned because even in China and South Korea they are starting to see a decline in infections. We are a large country with less dense population so people are better able to isolate themselves from others as well. Seeing people freak out did make me concerned that I should have some longer term food storage in case of a more severe disaster where food supply might become short. Stay safe and healthy!

The problem with stores today is, that they don't stock a water house like they used to in older times. Now people have to rely on the trucking industry to bring food. When they stop driving, worry.

Absolute truth. As a Veteran, I also have the be prepared as well as Implement-Overcome-Adapt. Denial and ignoring the signs are bad mojo. The image of unscrupulous folks turning violent to take what others have by force is NOT unrealistic.

Dont cancel the meet up. I cant see people living in fear. People go ahead an go to the meet up, have a good time. I have never stopped doing things in fear of whatever is going on around me. If something is going to happen, its going to happen no matter where you are. Enjoy life, stop panicking.

All the schools just closed in MI. As someone who works for the district (for a private company) I'm now looking at a minimum of 4 weeks without a paycheck. I'm glad I was stocking up for summer break because now I have a months worth of food and dry goods. I just have to worry about summer because of not being able to make the expected paycheck and using up the pantry earlier than expected.

Wisdom comes with living, but by the time you are wise, no one wants to listen. Hardships teach us valuable lessons in life, and that, I believe, is what they are for. Most older people (that would be me) are smarter than that, but many have also lead sheltered lives with no issues of hardship. They don't understand how to be ready, as they never had to be. It's not their fault, they just don't get it.

The problem isn’t the preppers it’s mass last minute prepping and hoarding. It’s got so bad that normal people can’t even find diapers for there children. A real prepper prepares for the worst. Running to the store and buying everything you see at the last minute is not being a prepper. That’s just being a drain on society.

Food storage has gone on for years but I'm some what ashamed of those in my generation that Did not learn from the ww2 generation and those that lived through the great depression. Preparing has gotten me and my family through bad weather and hard winters.

JudithB I am 72 and all I can say she must have been cityfolk! I was born and raised in the Air Force and Mom always kept the house stocked well where ever we were. 40 yrs ago I moved onto a farm in Arkansas and everyone stocked up all summer from the gardens and animals. I have been working on this prep project for 5-6 yrs now---floods, snow, layoffs and EMP potential-- have really driven me. This quarantine in place thing hasnt bothered me much, since its time on the homestead to do cleanups, repairs and start gardening chores. I am kind of worried about going to town next week on my monthly grocery run-- there is the people, possible lack of things in stores, etc. This has some challenges I guess, but we will come through this too! Stay safe out there!
