I remember you making a community post about these about 6th months ago and… Wow. That’s all I can say, I can’t wait until I can have a full printed novel in English
Mother and Earthbound are an Eastern perspective on the earlier, simpler west. There wasn't much darkness in our culture yet I mean maybe Everdread but that's about it lol
The world of MOTHER is very unique too in that it's a western setting from a Japanese perspective! The inverse would be you or I creating a game about a kid living in what we envision to be Tokyo, referencing the Japanese culture that inspires us (without leaning too heavily on stereotypes), while mixing in our western backgrounds. I do think that darkness you're referring to has always existed, it was just a different kind when compared to today
I highly recommend Summer of 84. It's a horror movie but it focuses really well on the pitfalls of idealizing the 80's and what "being the hero" in a "kids on bikes movie" entails.
@@Ranixo286The 80s are very idealised compared to today. There is always danger, but it was not aided and abetted by revolutionary governments marching to the WEF's drumbeat. No mass decolonisation projects leads to less crime.
i really really liked the Mother 2 book for everything except the whole Pokey is the host of Giygas thing (especially the finale oml). the finale makes it really hard for me to reccomend it to anyone though, and also makes it hard for me to consider reading again
Pretty much--they can't be considered canon since many of the events contradict what happens in the games! You can see them as fanfictions written at the request of Itoi 😅 though I like the idea that these are alternate worlds in the same universe. which could work given the end of book 2...
@@ThaneGamingI consider these books like what “The Silver Eyes” is to the FNAF franchise. Official stories that happen in an alternate universe from the game’s continuity.
Could the other reality that the Earthboundverse converged with be the Motherverse? That way both books are canon. Both Mother and most of Earthbound take place in separate worlds until Earthbound's ending had the two worlds merge to create a new one.
great video! it’s pretty interesting how much is different in the book. i was working on an earthbound rom hack while watching it and started wondering if it would be possible to make a hack put the story (or as much of it as possible) into the game. i might go somewhere with that in the future.
@@ThaneGaming it’s mostly for reference, but I am a pretty big fan of the Mother lore. I first completed Earthbound as a teenager back in ‘98, and it changed me like it did so many others. Almost 25 years later, and I’ve only just recently learned about the Codex Gigas, the largest known medieval illuminated manuscript in the world. I won’t say too much about it, maybe you’ve even already heard of it, but anyways it kinda blew my mind in light of all the other urban legends surrounding the Earthbound/Mother narrative. Itoi really went for it with this series, definitely a pioneer, and not just in terms of gaming, but in terms of how stories are told.

That earthbound book was insane. Pokey becoming the battle arena was definitely not something I could've expected to ever see. I feel like Giygas definitely should've replaced him with his all-encompassing form halfway instead of it just being a hallucination though.
