    Picky: Bro I don't know how to tell you this, so I'll whisper it into Ness' ear and he'll blurt it out in astonishment.
    (Picky whispers something into Ness' ear.)

    1:06:09 That sequence is actually showing us the true extent of Ness’s power in the novel.
    ….so yeah, technically speaking Ness COULD do all that if he wanted too.

    Mother and Earthbound are an Eastern perspective on the earlier, simpler west. There wasn't much darkness in our culture yet
    I mean maybe Everdread but that's about it lol

      @ThaneGaming  Рік тому +17

      The world of MOTHER is very unique too in that it's a western setting from a Japanese perspective! The inverse would be you or I creating a game about a kid living in what we envision to be Tokyo, referencing the Japanese culture that inspires us (without leaning too heavily on stereotypes), while mixing in our western backgrounds.
      I do think that darkness you're referring to has always existed, it was just a different kind when compared to today

      I highly recommend Summer of 84. It's a horror movie but it focuses really well on the pitfalls of idealizing the 80's and what "being the hero" in a "kids on bikes movie" entails.

    • @ThaneGaming

      Pretty much--they can't be considered canon since many of the events contradict what happens in the games! You can see them as fanfictions written at the request of Itoi 😅 though I like the idea that these are alternate worlds in the same universe. which could work given the end of book 2...

    Could the other reality that the Earthboundverse converged with be the Motherverse? That way both books are canon. Both Mother and most of Earthbound take place in separate worlds until Earthbound's ending had the two worlds merge to create a new one.

    great video! it’s pretty interesting how much is different in the book. i was working on an earthbound rom hack while watching it and started wondering if it would be possible to make a hack put the story (or as much of it as possible) into the game. i might go somewhere with that in the future.

      @@ThaneGaming it’s mostly for reference, but I am a pretty big fan of the Mother lore. I first completed Earthbound as a teenager back in ‘98, and it changed me like it did so many others. Almost 25 years later, and I’ve only just recently learned about the Codex Gigas, the largest known medieval illuminated manuscript in the world. I won’t say too much about it, maybe you’ve even already heard of it, but anyways it kinda blew my mind in light of all the other urban legends surrounding the Earthbound/Mother narrative. Itoi really went for it with this series, definitely a pioneer, and not just in terms of gaming, but in terms of how stories are told.

    • @ThaneGaming

      @@jasonkh4 I actually hadn't heard about the Codex Gigas until now, so thank you! I just searched it and what I (briefly) read was very interesting, so I'll have to look more into it soon. Itoi is probably my favorite creator, ever--the main reason I'm such a big fan of this series and its lore is the multitude of interviews with fascinating insight offering his inspirations & intentions. I have to agree with you, Itoi truly does break the mold as a storyteller with his unabashedly unique perspective on life!

      Oh thanks for letting me know! Do you see community posts by chance (polls, updates, etc.?) those tend to have a wide reach, so I'm thinking about leaning more into those for 2023 and linking to new videos of mine. I've found that the recommendations/home page is great sometimes but unfortunately unreliable for viewers & creators. There are some channels I watch lots of content from start to finish, and so new videos will appear in my feed for a while, but then it just stops for whatever reason (even though my interest never faltered). I have a running list of UA-camrs I like, to check in on occasionally so I don't have to depend on the algorithm 😅 thank you again for telling me this, it really helps!
