@Jay R your final conclussion on importance is an interesting non-sequiter. If there is no god, then there are no chosen people, there are no saved and damned, there are only people, and all are equally important. So there is no reason to think atheism would necessarily lead to someone thinking they are "the most important person in the world" As to the importance of life and action to an athiest: Consider that life is all there is for an athiest. There is no forgiveness, no absolution, no eternal reward. There is only what one does while they are alive and when that is gone, you can't fix anything. Add to that the above comment that one individual is not inherently more important than any other and you start to have a basis for caring about others needs as well as a sense of urgency to act. Further: one cannot choose not to believe, any more than one can choose to believe except in sofar as one refuses to engage with the arguements of one side or the other to avoid any challenge to one's belief bubble. One can chose how to act, but that doesnt constitute actual belief, this is well established in christian doctrine hence the battle over being saved by faith vs acts. @@stanal4064 *Yahweh: gives David 700 wives, calls him a man after His own heart* *gives Solomon 1,000 wives, proclaims to make him the wisest man who ever lived* The Bible never implies that David and Solomon’s polygamy was something praiseworthy or an award. In fact, the text implies that polygamy was the catalyst for David and Solomon’s fall from grace and ultimately the downfall of the kingdom. Observe that David’s sons murdered each other and led violent uprisings; while Solomon’s many wives led him to apostasy. After Solomon’s reign, the kingdom was split into two, and the people turned to idolatry. These are negative outcomes that can be traced to their wanton sexual debauchery. To say otherwise is to blatantly ignore authorial intent and to twist the text to suit an argument. It is like reading the Boy Who Cried Wolf and concluding that lying is good; because it is prevalent in the story. The conclusion of a written text often contains a reiteration of the text’s themes and/or thesis. This should form the basis for your interpretation. How the story ends is a clue for why the story was written. This is not a revolutionary method. This is what high school students learn in English Literature class, as they are force fed Shakespeare and Whitman. Speaking of Shakespeare, in Hamlet’s final act, everyone dies save for Horatio who serves as the sole witness. From this finale, we wouldn’t assume that Shakespeare intended for audiences to applaud Hamlet’s obsession with revenge. Rather, Shakespeare is criticizing Hamlet’s bloodlust. His earlier work Titus Andronicus had similar themes, so we can be fairly sure of his authorial intent. An objective critic should apply the same standards for Hamlet, the Boy Who Cried Wolf, or even the US Constitution when interpreting the Bible. The standard is context. Instead, you have conflated unrelated texts to create a Frankensteinian monster of your own imagination. You misconstrue God’s praise for David’s character or Solomon’s wisdom to mean polygamy is good. This is the equivalent of editing multiple video clips to put words in a person’s mouth. The phrase “a man after his own heart” is only found in two instances in Scripture. The first is 1 Samuel 13:14. God Himself is not speaking here. Instead, it is the prophet Samuel speaking on His behalf. At this point, Samuel is unaware of who David even is. However, David is introduced shortly after, so this statement would be about him. As important as who Samuel is speaking about is whom he is speaking to. This statement is directed at King Saul, David’s predecessor, who directly disobeyed God. Because of Saul’s hubris, his kingdom will be given to a more faithful vassal. Enter David. He is not married and has not committed any heinous sins yet. He does not fit the image of king unlike Saul, but God tells Samuel that He looks at the heart not the appearance of a person. The second instance is Acts 13:22, which is a reference to 1 Samuel. This time it is Paul speaking while summarizing a highly-condensed history of Israel before a crowd. Paul quotes God as directly and definitively calling David “a man after His own heart.” Paul used this phrase to build up to the revelation that Jesus is David’s descendant and the promised messiah. Polygamy has nothing to do with either verses. You’ve mistakenly written David had 700 wives. He had 8 wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. This is not to say 8 wives are less sinful than 700. One of David’s marriages is a result of adultery and murder. Just as Saul was judged by God, David is punished as well. The prophet Nathan tells David bloodshed will hang over his house. A chain of tragedies tears apart the kingdom and his family. One of his sons rapes his daughter, who is the son’s half-sister. In retaliation one of the half-brothers kills the rapist and starts a coup against David. Solomon is the seed of David’s bloody affair. Like father like son, Solomon’s fatal flaw was his lust. This demonstrates that for all his wisdom, Solomon could not conquer his own sinful nature. He is a type of failed messiah, wasted potential. The text is quite clear God was displeased with Solomon and David. It is written, “So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done. On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.” (1 Kings 11:6-8) If you read other polygamists in the Bible, you’ll see that the whole of Scripture (not just a few cherry-picked verses) unambiguously is of the position polygamy is harmful and sinful. The only people who believe that the Bible endorses polygamy are part of fringe groups or cults. Your other arguments are rife with similar issues, but it will take an inordinate amount of time to address each point. Hopefully this will suffice.

In Christianity and other religions ancient men write religious text and describe gods that appeal to their imagination and the needs of their society. @@hyrulehistorian2317 You have to prove a god exists first; yes the burden of proof is on you. I am an atheist, and even I think it is far beyond stupid to appoint an atheist as a chaplain for a college or any other organization. Yes, I think I am a kind, intelligent person (I have degrees in both Electronics Engineering and Business Administration) who can perhaps help those who are going through a bad time by giving worthwhile advice in a non-secular nature. However, a chaplain, IMHO, should be qualified to give religious advice to those who need it. While I would respect the beliefs of those people who asked for my help in a religious matter, the ONLY worthwhile advice I could give would be to tell them to go see their priest/minister/rabbi. As Dirty Harry said, "A man has to know his limitations."

I'm in a 12 step group for addictscts and people struggling with life. In one breakout session there were 10 people sharing on the topic of hope. To a person, when we came to a time in our lives where we'd lost hope, those times were when we were closest to a suicidal mindset. Some even attempted it.
Without hope life seems pointless.
I will pray for you and your group! My brother took his life and I felt anger for his selfishness and anger at the drugs that messed his mind and wished I had prayed more for his cure and to find a path to God's Love! God is the hope and salvation. Maybe volunteering at a church to share your love could be a path... but do not know all your trials and tribulations.... God's blessings!
But does hope really have to come from spiritual beliefs and not the real world?
if you think of it, in the greek myth, hope was in the pandora's box with all the ills of mankind, hope is just thinking somebody will come save you when you're in a bad situation, it prevent you to save yourself waiting that someone else does it for you, it's not really a good thing, if somebody does help you it's good but it's not because you had hope they'd come, hope is an excuse to stay passive in your own life against threats that you face, you can hope that your boss will increase your salary, working hard for him to notice, but the truth is even if he notice he won't increase your salary if you don't tell him you want it to happen, even then you'll have to be convincing that it's in his interest and not just hope that he agrees
I think since we have anti-Americans representing us in Congress, we need more of these guys to get us over the "hump" of having hope that things will change for the better.

@@sirgreedy88 That may be. But is certainly clearly demonstrates their unrealistic outlook on life. @Jay R your final conclussion on importance is an interesting non-sequiter. If there is no god, then there are no chosen people, there are no saved and damned, there are only people, and all are equally important. So there is no reason to think atheism would necessarily lead to someone thinking they are "the most important person in the world"
As to the importance of life and action to an athiest: Consider that life is all there is for an athiest.
Obviously youtube comments can't do a whole branch of ethical philosophy justice, but respecting that someone believes something different that you for genuine reasons goes a long way to allowing you to challenge those reasons in the first place.

*Yahweh: gives David 700 wives, calls him a man after His own heart*
*gives Solomon 1,000 wives, proclaims to make him the wisest man who ever lived*
The Bible never implies that David and Solomon’s polygamy was something praiseworthy or an award.

Ideally, a Chaplain works like the Venn Diagram. Here's my beliefs, here's your beliefs, where they overlap is where I can meet you. If you need religious help where they don't overlap, I will facilitate your contact with someone who can help in that area. But I won't compromise my own faith.
The bee is stepping it up one day at a time
The reality of this is that ceremony, ritual, and interpersonal skills can be "religious" even when there's no real faith or religion.
Some seek that level of superficial appeasement. But for those who are actually desiring a deeper, fuller relationship with God, “ceremony” and “ritual” are a hollow, vaccous substitute. Counterfeits and placebos peddled by a closed mind cannot be compared to mentors speaking with authority.
By the way the most subtle joke in this whole thing is the one about an atheist Jim Jones. Jim Jones was an atheist.
ohh the comments here are making me laugh as much as the video did
"I'm an atheist and this is spot on"
"I'm an atheist and this is not at all what is it."
"Hey Jerry, why are you smiling? Wait! I know! Is it because Christ died on the cross for our sins?"
"Nailed it!"

@@wesleytillman9774 it’s not that an atheist can’t be good. It’s just that on atheism the word “good” has no meaning.
ua-cam.com/video/OxiAikEk2vU/v-deo.html
@@hlehman1987 I watched the video and it has a book worth of questionable assumptions that precludes a complete analysis here. However, one can assume a god or gods exist and how does that connect with moral values on earth? How do we know what a deity thinks about morality and ethics? There's no way to tell. In Christianity and other religions ancient men write religious text and describe gods that appeal to their imagination and the needs of their society. That's the only way they can get provide a framework for their lives and be promised the things they can't get themselves. But, this "ultimate authority" is just the very subjective assertion of people creating and practicing a religion they created.
@@wesleytillman9774 As for the how it connects to morality if there is an all powerful ruler or creator they decide right and wrong, like a countries laws on a much bigger scale. As for the how we know, while I can’t speak for other religions, Christians look to Jesus Christ to know what God is like. Finally the idea that we’re practicing a belief system that humans pulled out of thin air is circular logic, it only works if you assume atheism is correct and can’t really be taken as a legitimate argument for or against something because of that.
@@hyrulehistorian2317 You have to prove a god exists first; yes the burden of proof is on you. Then we can get into if there is communication with this god outlining desired moral and ethical beliefs. If there is a god it doesn't necessarily imply there's a relationship going on between such a god and the human race. The bible and other religious texts are the work of humans. If there was a god who wanted to communicate with humans he would certainly choose a more foolproof means of such communication than the endless subjectivity and conflicting varieties of human literature. He could enter all our minds directly and prove his reality. It doesn't happen but instead people invent religions and claim there are the foundation of reality.

And just like how atheists do not need guidance, a real Christian, any good Christian really, has no need of their chaplains, as they have their way paved clearly.
You are not wrong! But many Believers are just coming into the fuller knowledge, and it’s nice to have someone who is further along the path for guidance. Understanding and pursuing substance is a far cry from blindly embracing the absence of it.
