- The death toll in a highway collapse in southern China has risen to 36, as emergency teams continue efforts to recover cars from the scene.
“As of 5:30am on May 2 … 36 people have died, and 30 people have been injured,” state news agency Xinhua reported, adding that the injured were not in life-threatening condition.
The road collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday morning as China began its major May holidays, traditionally one of the busiest times of the year on the roads.
It happened near the city of Meizhou, in Guangdong province.
Heavy rain and flooding caused a section of the road to cave in.
More than 20 vehicles plunged down a ravine in the mountainous area.

That looks like a newish road and they've just laid a road surface on sand or clay on a steep slope. It's always cheaper to do something badly. What a load of rubbish. If this is the quality of their infrastructure in the disputed territories in the South China Sea then it'll probably all wash away in short order.

Meaning that mountain isn’t suitable for building highway. In developed countries people would not be living near places like this at all.

@@saml332 Since you can’t prevent a landslide? The best way to avoid landslide casualties is to never build human settlement around unstable mountains. This place is considered uninhabitable. Back then they should have evacuated the people out instead of building roads around it. Not sure if this is immature management or they just don’t cate about human lives.
