MG42 wad works well for steel. I use it in straight wall hulls with 1oz of steel BB for goose with longshot powder. Same load works in STS hulls but use some mica on the wads.
I have used that wad in the STS hulls myself. Last season I took 3 ducks at 30,35, and 40 through a Carlson Cremator Long Range choke. I had it loaded with 1 ounce of #3 steel. It has quickly become one of my favorite loads.
Can you tell me data On Rio 2 3/4 1 1/8 7.5 lead z21 wad? what powders I can use? The manual says red dot does that mean imr or will alliant red dot work? When loaded in 1/4 from the top.
IMR Red was a short run of powder offered by Hodgdon (who owns IMR) as a direct competitor for Alliant’s dot line. They had Red, Green, Blue, Target, and Unequal. They were billed as direct replacements for the Alliant brands. I would recommend calling Hodgdon and asking their ballisticians about that.
It just don’t make sense to me if I’m loading it per data why am I a 1/4 short at the top of the hull. It’s doesn’t call for filler wads or over shot cards. Rio manual load data is 100322- 18838. Thank you for the clarification on the powder. The Rio manual just says red dot ! Vague for a beginner.
Thank you for all your help it’s starting to work a little better. I may have been pushing the wad in way too hard. It still could use a OS card in my opinion.

Could you do a video comparing the different primers by dimension and what hulls use the larger/wider primers?
Sounds like a good idea.
Keep it coming
Will do! Thanks for watching.
Rifle/pistol reloaders don't appreciate the advantages of the slow, purposeful, methodical shotshell reloading method you demonstrate.
How does steel loads compare economically with a lead dove or target load?
Thank you sir
Do you have any 20 gauge steel loads to share?
I don't yet. I am hoping to get into steel for the 20 gauge in the future.
#2 awesome ✔

According to The Rio Manual Red Dot is referring to Alliant Red Dot.
