Mostly calculated for myself, but could perhaps be useful for others, so I'm sharing it. My measurements are somewhere between medium and large, and I'm somewhat petite. I've given the exact details, so it's easier for anybody to compare.
    MEASUREMENTS:
    Waist: 33"+2" ease = 192 st
    Hips: 42"+2" ease = 242 st
    Crotch depth: 13"+1" ease = 98 rows
Crotch length: 33" divided by two, 17" = 119 rows
Crotch difference: length - depth = 21 rows
Leg width: 25"+2" ease times two 52" = 286 st
(p.s. Crotch depth is measured from waist to flat surface of when one is sitting, crotch length is measured from waist at the front to waist at the back via the crotch, also while sitting, then divided by two. As there are no direct seams, the back and front don't need to be different in depth, no matter how much one's bottoms protrude.)
    GAUGE:
The gauge I went with is 22 st and 28 rows per 4", therefore 5.5 stitches per inch and 7 rows per inch. I used the same needles and yarn as the one in the video, aka 3 mm needles and cotton yarn in a similar weight.
    1. CAST ON
With contrasting colour scrap yarn, cast on 192 stitches (calculation: full hip measurement plus 2” times stitches per inch = cast on stitches) and cut yarn.
    2. JOIN IN ROUND
With main yarn, knit one row. Make sure that stitches are not twisted and join the work in the round.
    3. STARTING WAISTBAND
    Knit 16 rounds
    4. MAKING HOLES FOR CORD
Knit 42 stitches (calculation: cast on stitches divided by 4 minus 5), yarn over, knit 10, yarn over, knit rest of round
    5. CLOSING HOLES FOR CORD
Knit up to previous row yarn over, knit two together, knit up to previous row yarn over, knit two together, knit rest of round
    6. FINISHING WAISTBAND
    Knit 4 rounds
    7. ELASTIC BAND
Cut elastic band of 36” (calculation: Waist plus additional 1”) and overlap by an inch to sew elastic band into a circle.
    8. PLACING ELASTIC BAND
Fold knitted pieces wrong sides together and insert the elastic band in between. Grab t-bar of stitch from cast on edge and put on left needle to knit one by one with existing stitches. Work the entire round in this manner.
    9. PLACING MARKERS + 2 st increase
Knit 48 st (calculation: cast on st divided by 4), Place Marker, pick up an extra stitch from cast on, knit 96 st (calculation: cast on st divided by 2), Place Marker, pick up an extra stitch from cast on, knit rest of round. St number should now be cast on stitches plus 2.
    10. CROTCH DEPTH INCREASE
Increase by 4 stitches (one stitch increase on each side of the marker offset by one stitch) on each 9th row for a total of 98 rows. (calculation: full hip st minus current stitch count divided by 4, then take that number and divide your crotch depth rows by it. This will tell you on which row to increase by 4, for a total of rows of your crotch depth.)
    11. CROTCH DIFFERENCE INCREASE
Increase by 4 stitches (one stitch increase on each side of the marker offset by one stitch) on each 2nd row for a total of 21 rows. (calculation: two legs st minus full hip st divided by 4. Crotch length rows minus crotch depth rows divided by previous number.)
    12. DIVIDING FOR LEGS
Knit up to next marker, knit 1. Take another circular needle and knit to 1st before marker. Join in the round.
    13. KNIT LEGS
Knit each leg in the round for as long as you want the leg to be (30 rows in the video). 12 rows before the end, knit one row with contrasting scrap yarn carried alongside regular yarn.
    14. FINISH LEGS
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Insert yarn in the needle and sew to the 12th row, using the contrasting row as guideline, which can be removed afterwards.
    15. SEW HOLES AND SEAMS
Sew crotch hole and seams as per video instructions if necessary
    16. CORD
    Insert cord as per video

Hey I made these shorts :) I started off thinking 176 stitches was too big so I only did 156, but then realized they wouldn't be loose so I increased after every 3 rows instead of every 5 (calculated so that I'd finish with the same number of stitches as you did haha). They turned out perfectly fitted down to the hips, looser around the legs, and I really like the shape this way! I loved the drawstring tutorial too but I'm an amateur at crochet so I watched at 0.25 speed haha.
My mom told me I need to make the back longer, don't think it was necessary but I did it anyway and my sketchy method of doing that turned out kinda weird but it's fine :) I also finished off the shorts by k2tog into the 12th row stitches then binding those off, basically doing what you did for the waistband because I really like that technique!
Anyway thanks for these awesome tutorials, you make such cute clothes that I'd actually wear and I'm learning a lot from you!

Love this pattern! I’m at the part where you say to repeat 5 rounds and then the M1L/M1R round. I got it down the first time but when I have to repeat I’m not sure which stitch to knit up to before I increase. Do I always knit up the the same stitch that bordered the original increase and knit more in between the two increases or do I shift the stitch I knit up to each time I repeat? I hope that made some sense! I’d be forever grateful for a bit of guidance on this!

You can knit a sample swatch. Then measure how many stitches do you have per inch/cm (number A). Next, measure your waist, and add your desired positive ease to it (number B). Multiply number A by number B to get the number of stitches you need to cast on.
