I like the idea of "resting" a horse's mouth, I have a bridle horse that I like to ride in a hackamore when not showing, I like this video.

I like the idea of not using anything in a horse's mouth.

You can ride a horse in snaffle bit the same way you would a in hackamore, but you can't ride a horse in hackamore the same as you would in a snaffle bit.

where would I find a good example of how broke a horse should be BEFORE the hackamore is started? I see this one responding so well immediately, but would like to have seen her demo'ed in the bit first.

@@vaqueroontario do you have video of starting in a hackamore? My hubby's younster was started in a snaffle, but when we went to pick him up after 60 days the trainer switched to a hackamore after hubby had ridden in the bit (not sure why as horse has not worn one before). I thought some training would be involved as the feel and pressure points would be so different but dont know enough to question the trainer's judgement. Hubby ordered a custim setup from the trainer's brother, so there's that.

@@judymiller5154 I think it's because you can't really long rein in a hackamore ...or at least i can't see how you would and i dont know anyone who has tried ...so basically to teach the basics and back them you have to use the snaffle as the first teaching aid .. also ...ideally in any bit you never want to pull pull but rather bump release ..even in a snaffle but if the horse was going to pull me i would say i wouldn't want them in the hackamore at all. SO i guess it's when the horse is ready and that is very subjective. are there videos of people long reining in hackamores???

If hackamores work so well, why go back to a bit?

      A very smart question.

@@gerrycoleman7290 unfortunately for show horses, according to the aqha, only horses 5 and under can be ridden in a bosal in western pleasure classes. I dont know about reining but it's probably the same. It is also the same way in 4-h, and theres practically no mention of hackamores for english. Luckily barrel horses can be ridden in hackamores but those are more of a mechanical style, the little S hack is really popular, I prefer a small beetle hack for gymkhana events.

Why do you want to pull on her face?

Thank you for your instruction. And your kindness. There is no need for a bit but people do not know an alternative. This video needs much more views. But erm...the spurs aren't necessary either. Just sayin'.

Thank you so much. I do not agree with breaking a horse in a snaffle. Why not use a sidepull? I choose riding without iron in the mouth.

Going bitless has completely changed my horse. Hes 16 now and had a horrible stop a few years ago. I listened to trainers, did all the different methods. Where the problem wasnt his training it was that he doesnt respond well to cues from a metal bit. I put a little beetle hack on him and we went from a 28 second pole pattern down to I believe below a 25.

Joshua, some horseman never do. "No iron" is another way to ride.

If you have only ridden in a hackamore you are not a horseman. The very concept of a horseman means you can ride in every bit bosul hackamore etc to a high standard.

The hackamore hanger is too close to the eyes.
