Pagodas are, and will always be an Iconic Mercedes. This and the 600 w100 are the pinnacle of Mercedes post war manufacturing. 👌

I own a 71’ 280 SL automatic green with saddle interior can sure agree what a great car it is. The engine sound is like no other car I have driven. It a thrill just to start the engine. We have been the only owners and always kept it garaged so still in great condition. Great to know your out there.
    Steve 🙂

My mother had a 1964 230SL automatic back in the mid sixties ; my father bought her it when it was two or three years old and alongside our W110 190 , these were the family cars during my childhood ; we also had a 1964 Land Rover and a succession of VW Beetles , so I grew up with an appreciation of German cars . The W113 stayed in the family for about 10 years , although I was too young to drive it , and was replaced by a R107 350SL , which remained only a few months until my mother realised how much fuel it drank , at which point it was replaced by an Audi 100GL , that car remained in the family for 20 years and I drove many miles in it ; it was a really good car , it became mine then my sister's after me .
I learned to drive , and passed my test , in my father's W115 220/8 then a year or so later , when the W123 series came out , he bought a new W123 250 in Maple Yellow and gave me the 220 .
Alas , in 1978 , a drunk driver came around a bend on the wrong side of the road and crashed into my 220 ... it turned out the car was also stolen , he had no licence nor insurance , but i was in a Mercedes-Benz vs a Ford Capri , so , despite the front crumple zone being badly crumpled , I stepped out unhurt , while the other guy had face lacerations , a broken nose , several broken ribs and three broken limbs . That score was Mercedes won ; Ford lost .
I replaced that car with a W114 280E 5 speed manual - what a fantastic car , and around the same time bought my 1957 Ponton 219 , which I kept for 34 years . I also had a W111 220S Heckflosse for about 10 years ; I bought that car because it reminded me of the W110 190 my father had while I was a child .
I won't bore you with all my other Mercedes cars which ranged through W116 , W123 , W124 , W126 , R129 , W201 , W140 and numerous others , currently driving a W124 , but I do remember far enough back through Mercedes Benz history to recall the cars shown here , and spent many hours in my mother's 230SL , which I wish I'd had the chance to drive , but I was too young back then .

I can feel your enthusiasm. My Mercedes story is quite an unusual one. When I was 5 yrs old, the next door neighbor sold me his 1957 300 Sedan for One Dollar. It was my club house. I cried when we moved a year later and could not take with us. So I share your deep passion for these classic cars.

I inherited a 280 SL that was in my family's possession since my granddad bought it back in 1969. It has been sitting around for nearly 30 years and is being restored now by the leading German expert in Pagodas since that's where I live. The car actually has never left its home town and I am absolutely excited to be behind the wheel again in a couple of weeks. Mine features a manual transmission which I remember to be a bit awkward with its long lever but then it's no sports car and you don't have to shift it alot once afloat on the country roads. I really love the appriciation Hemmels is devoting to the W113 which for so lpng had been somewhat looked down upon by collectors.

How does the engine perform with modern fuel injection?

      @@accelerateyoutube
I had an original 230SL. It was a pig to start. The engine needed a few revs on turnover to get it going, so having a bigger battery than standard was essential. Mercedes put a starting injector in the inlet manifold to aid starting.
What *transformed* it was fitting contactless electronic ignition. It started immediately, being smoother, and faster, on acceleration, and a slightly faster idling speed. I found I could disconnect the starting injector.
I do not know what benefits there are with the new injection system. Or how much it differs. I took the injection pump off taking it to a Bosch dealer who calibrated it. When collecting it, he asked how many miles it had done. I told him 60,000. he said it was spot on not requiring any calibration. He greased it up saying it will stay that way for another 60,000.
The 300SL was high pressure _direct_ injection - they used the injection pump used on the WW2 Me109 fighter plane. The later SLs used low pressure mechanical injection into the inlet ports. The injectors needed the odd cleaning. Take them out, then best by compressed air, then coloured fuel to see the 60 degree cone.

I get it - you were excited. But if you're going to do this sort of reporting you need to be a little less starry-eyed about it - on the outside at least. This sounded too much like "I'm just thrilled to be doing this so don't expect a single negative word out of me" kind of fan-boi service jobs.
