Thanks alot for all Great Buying TIPS ! Very intresting ! To assure you, I really did not fell asleep ;-) Greetings, Roger.
Thanks Roger! I'm impressed you stayed awake! That was the longest video I've done without sparkley objects to try to keep people's attention, or pretty ladies so I think it made me work harder to try to keep it at least a tony bit engaging (better in the second half. All good training for me - learning on the job!) :)
Great video, thanks!
Thanks Roberto! Remember to now add 20% VAT plus import fees for outside the UK (Similar to my Imports video)
Occasionally I find items that I would like in the sellers own site. Check "see sellers other items" listings especially if the seller is a specialist seller. Sometimes they may have multiple copies of the same lens or a range of prices for the same lens.
Great tip Barry thanks!
The "Near Mint" from Japan is wonderful...
Example on a "Near Mint" Canon P

Beautiful condition.
There is very slight fungus.
Lens:
There is fog(or coating damage) on middle lens.
Using this lens affect photos
■ Functional
Hard to rotate aperture ring.
Except above, it works properly.
Yes... Near Mint... the "Near" word is quite a big one...
Ha thanks for the example :)
I have bought 4 items from 4 different Japanese sellers. Every item was properly described, or even under described. I was very pleased with all of these purchases.
Thanks yes the 25mm I just bought from Japan was perfect so when it said Mint is was but just be careful as from my examples I shared often mint isn't mint at all. If the photos are accurate you can always buy with confidence regardless of the wording. I have nothing against Japan, it was just an observation so great to hear you got 4 great lenses.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I've had a very good experience with buying photo gear from Japan by following all of the guidelines you have mentioned. (I live in the USA.) I have had the same experience with the U.K. If I want a mint condition item, the description and the photos *must* reflect that designation. Any mention of dust, normal wear, or even a scratch no matter how small, the item is not mint, so I reject it.
Excellent video! Most useful for me what you said directly after 11:00. I didn't know that the highest bidding price is not the price which you have to pay at the end! This was very useful for me to know. I participated in the past in a couple of auctions where I was overbid just a few bucks because I was too cautious with my max. bid price - this explains it now what happened.
Thanks Martin, I always appreciate your feedback so I'm happy I could help on this occasion. Next time you can bid with confidence :)
I think also be mindful that if it is too good to be true, it probably is. To do a research on the item prior to buying is a must.
Thanks Wilfred, yes great advice!
I bought my first Leica this weekend. A M2 and a Canon 35mm f1.8 ltm. I like it so far. Thanks for the good videos!
Thanks and Congrats! Great combo, I use the same. Good timing too.. see the video I just posted ha :)
Bought at Kamera Express in Capelle aan den IJssel a Polaroid 4x5 back.
Stainless steel rollers blocke by green stoned developing paste.
"All second hand gear has been cleaned and checked", they say.
The service departement thought I was collecting and not using it.
Nice Jaco!
Great sharing ^^
Thanks!
Thank you for the tips! Many sellers' define mint as the cosmetic state of a camera or lens. Mechanical and optical quality are not factored in. It's reminiscent of the shopkeeper in "The Dead Parrot Sketch" countering the customer's complaint by pointing out the dead bird's "beautiful plummage".
Ha thank you! Both funny and a great tip!
Well done, Matt! I've been trading on eBay since the last millennium and largely agree with your strategies. I'd like to add a few of my own. On an auction ending in say 7 days, I place an initial low offer and then place my max late offer 4-5 seconds before closing (AKA sniping). I also prefer to bid noneven amounts. For example in your initial example of late bidding 200 had the winning bidder at the time you bid had also bid 200 (not unlikely as most bidders bid in even amounts) as his maximum bid you would lose since his bid was placed earlier. If you bid 200.05 and his max was 200, you would get the item for 200.05. I have won and lost multiple auctions by a penny or two. I said 200.05 instead of 200.01 in case the other bidder is a clever fellow and had high bid 200.01. There is also sniping software that will, for a small fee, place a bid for you on auctions ending when you cannot bid (at work, asleep, etc.).
Thanks Adam, I appreciate you warm words. Thanks for the info too! Ah yes I do the odd number thing too! I forgot to mention that. I was not aware of the sniping S/W so always learning and yes someone else mentioned placing an early low bid to hold an auction. Great tip! Watch out for the guy now going in at 200.06 :P
hello Matt , yes please if you can , do a review of Canon 7 rangefinder , it will be apprecaited . thanks
Hi Daniel, OK i'll try to put something together. Annoyed I lost the first detailed vid I did and now I no longer have the cameras as a prop!
Hi Matt I have not long brought a Nikon f5 mint and was very lucky it was beautiful very happy with my purchase from Japan, but yes you must read and look closely because I looked at many to get mine and also the seller how he or she has gone . On eBay I’ve been lucky but only buy through PayPal so far all good, love your work Matt look forward to all your videos, have learnt so much as I have said on another video of only just got back to film 🎞 and can’t wait to get back on developing my black-and-white film thank you for being an inspiration to this process. It’s because of you and others on UA-cam that’s given me that inspiration to pursue using film again and it’s wonderful, thanks again and maybe one day I’ll go media format you never know, cheers from down under 🇦🇺 have a great day.
Thanks Brendan, even with that advice I give it is still possible to get caught out. I'm currently in the process of sending a lens back to Japan. It was the use MINT A++++ type lens.. but although it looked nice the aperture was stuck open. They should have put Mint but not functional haha :) Thanks for the video feedback, i'm glad you find them useful! If you run out of videos and want more content to inspire you see my Patreon. That has film stuff on there, some editing tips etc.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt have now become a Patreon looking forward to all your videos, it’s always risky buying on eBay you must use PayPal and yes the Japanese word for mint is so different to use, but they have lots of amazing products, anyway thanks and have a great day cheers.
@@brendanhayes5565 thanks for checking out Patreon. I think PayPal should be seen as an extra layer of protection and not a bad thing. You can still pay via credit card through PayPal.
I would not worry too much about added competition for bidders by sharing these tips as many of these are already out there and applicable to not just photo gear. They are great to know but most people will not apply these tips unless they really really want a particular item. You are more likely to create competition and raise prices if you point out a particular camera or gear you want or bring attention too. Look at what happens with the price of the Canon AE-1. The price on that camera will drop because there are so many out there but when the hipster channels make a video on it the price raises so much. I was fortunate enough to buy one cheap and sell it at a profit. Thanks for the tips though. I am teasing myself with 4x5 and it is time to bust out the spread sheets lol.
Thanks Jose, sorry I missed this! 4x5.. nice! I will try to share my 4x5s next year :) They can be great fun and price can be good for some models.
Before you buy from a dealer on eBay there is one thing you should check. Sometimes you will find better prices on the dealer's website. I guess it has something to do with the additional eBay costs. I saved a lot of money with my Leica MP with that trick. I'm sure that trick will not work for every dealer but you should at least check the website before you buy on eBay.
Thanks yes I normally Google first to get an idea of dealer prices then check eBay. Agreed sometimes online stores are cheaper so good tip!
Regarding how eBay works, I believe you have 5 offers and not 3. Also the fact sellers says they accept no return has no value as eBay rules offer buyer’s protection based on rules that supersedes anything a creative seller feels like writing. If you have a good reason to ask for a return (not matching description, broken...), eBay will make sure it happens.
Thanks Nico, I don't think i've ever bid 5 times and I read it was 3 but apologies I stand corrected if it is actually 5. Good point regarding returns, thanks for pointing that out too.
Also you can always revert to the “Rights under Consumer Law” strategy. Everyone selling in Australia has to provide for returns and refunds of faulty products.
Thanks Matt for such great works on this channel. Have been following your channel and learn a lot!
I have been buying lens from Ebay. I found that 4 out of 6 lens I purchased that described with no haze or scratch, sometime comes with light haze or light scratch. Especially, two times I ordered from Japan, they both have light haze. I just am just wondering if some light haze / scratch on vintage like Canon 50mm 1.4 ltm are normal and acceptable?
Thanks! I think if the seller says none it should mean that but it should not affect image quality in most cases.
It was mentioned in an other comment here already: Only buy from Japanese sellers with a four-digit number of ratings and at least 99,8%, 100% even better if you don't want any surprises. At these sellers, look at the description. They are always correct. If somewhere in the description you are asked to look at the photos, the lens has a problem that bad that the seller doesn't want to list it in the description. Don't buy lenses (or cameras) you are asked to look at on the pictures without an explanation why or what to look for, unless you are good in repairing them.
I have bought several items at the photshop MK Optics in Delft.
Broken front standard of a 13x18 Cambo view camera.
Missing anti rotating bolt of a Compur shutter.
Mamiya C220 body is light leaking.
Removed cable release socket from the Linhof lensboard
Missing spring of the screenholder of a 4 x 5 view camera.
Mamiya C 330 Sekor 65 mm scratch front ens.
Missing insert of the HP 4 x 5 developing tank.
Symmar 1 : 5,6 - 100 mm with the wrong Compur 00 shutter.
"Shutters have been tested by the sound they make ............"
It might be a kind of swindle shop, but I am not sure.
Thanks for the information Jaco, noted
And sorry to hear it
this video is mint
Haha, thanks! That was a popular phrase in UK some years back 👍🏻
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom that scratched lens was hideous! Haha
@@PerryCarbonell I know I was amazed! 😂
he sad thing is that most, if not all ads on ebay for what i want are 'buy it now' prices. not many sell at auction anymore.
Yes that means less chance of a deal and more like buying from a shop. Can still be OK. I buy with both methods.
Have you ever purchased a used Leica body on eBay? Is this something advisable for such an expensive camera? Would you advise people to buy new even at the extra cost? I've purchased lenses and camera bodies on eBay in the past and never had any issues (all from Japan I should say) but never something in the thousands of US$. Even given your recommendations on how to protect yourself is it worth the risk to venture into the secondhand Leica market?
Yes mostly lenses and film cameras rather than digital (from memory). I buy a lot on eBay. Try to buy from an online store not a random guy if something very expensive, I would. I got tricked in the past and lost a lot of money. There are lots of used Leicas in shops online too and often similar price. My SL I just bought was from a Leica store as cheaper than eBay/ elsewhere!
I would be careful with looking at the past sales prices on eBay. Those having “make offer” are not showing the final agreed prices. Sometimes I will make an offer just for eBay to let me know for how much it sold. I would often disagree with your point about not going lower than 15%. Many sellers are stuck 50 years back and still refer to the prices they paid at that time. I think that’s the point of pricing research to define what the fair price is. Many times what worked the best for me was to monitor auctions for several months and be really patient until the right deal shows up. Patience is likely the best strategy.
Thanks Nico! greta info. Yes patience is certainly king with eBay (sorry I should have mentioned that small aspect ha!) You often only get the best deals if you are happy to watch and wait. I've done that with some of my lenses. Thanks regarding pricing.. when people offer me 50-60% of the value I don't even give them the time of day.. but good point.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I would say that if the offer is less than 20% of the asking price, it better comes with a comment explaining where it comes from. Some sellers are as delusional as buyers sometimes 😆
I've read/ been told that it's fairly standard to go in with an offer that's 75% of the asking price and to negotiate from there. I've begun successful negotiations that way and will usually include a quick explanation stating the prices of any sold items that I've found on eBay or any price comparison that I've been able to make with camera shops specialising in used equipment. Generally the seller will engage well with such an approach.
@@matchat86 Great tip with regards to explaining your offer, thanks!
Wow thanks for the info .
It shows you really care about your audience, that counts for a lot!
Like we say in Costa Rica: ¡Matt está solo! You’re alone!
Thanks Robert! :)
Couldn't find a Canon 50mm F1.8 for the Leica me.
They are popular as cheap
Quick question, does oil on the aperture blades affect image quality at all, or is it just a visual flaw? Thank you for all the tips!
Hi Frank, thanks.. no it wont affect the image.. to start with but as I understand it can later cause moisture on the glass / oil marks and then it will.. so I try to buy without oil if I can.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom got it, thanks for the info!
@@Frank-Ding 👍🏻
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Oil on the aperture blades does not affect image quality, that's correct. However, "travelling" of moisture or oil to the glass is not the problem caused by it, it rather will render the lens useless over time, because the aperture blades get stuck and don't open and/or close timely anymore or at all.
Until several years ago, buying from Japan was almost a guarantee of conservative evaluations. If the description said "excellent" it generally was; if it said "mint," that's what you got, I bought several lenses listed as "good" and they came like new. In the past few years, however, that seems to have been turned on its head, and my experience has been like Matt's: I can't believe the seller is talking about the same lens in the photos. All of this rubbish about claiming something is "excellent" and then adding multiple asterisks or plus signs seems to be a tell that the seller is not being entirely honest with the appraisal.
Thanks for the feedback and confirmation Paul. My lens from Japan shown in the last video I posted was indeed mint but yes I was amazed at how many cowboys have popped up recently.
Exc +++ in Japan = Good in USA
Ha yes!
the Canon 35mm 1.8 lives on my M2 it's a great lens! What I find often from Japan is EX or EXCELLENT+++++++++ and it's no good.
Thanks Eric! Haha yes be careful with Japan eBay. I just sent some back to Japan for full refund.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yeah I recently sent something back to Japan it's a pain!
@@erichartke4331 agreed!
Matt, if i go broke its your fault!
Ha sorry! Sharing my own issues ha.
This needs to be updated for the post Brexit world, i.e. import duty applies to Europe now
Thanks yes I guess I need to do a new one at some point. Brexit it pretty rubbish when it comes to eBay. Not helpful at all sadly.
How’s your experience with buying Russian Leica clones and lenses from Russia, Ukraine, etc.?
Generally good, I would say buy lens with camera ideally even if camera not working. I have another coming as we speak to test.
the auctions are rigged!! It's so annoying to bid on an item and then someone with an ebay rating of 1-8 or less than 100 good rating jacks up the price! I wish ebay would come up with metrics that set a minimum of 250 good ratings to stop the unnecessary gouging!
Most of my purchases are best offer buy it now so I don’t see the auction side too much. But as you say I’m sure it can happen. Thanks for sharing.
@bulcub how would anyone get a rating of 250 positive transactions if they aren't allowed to bid on anything until they attain that rating? If ebay were to tackle anything they should ban the use of bots and sniping software. It's so prevalent that it puts many buyers off because they are just wasting their time waiting for auction after auction to end.
@@matchat86 Thanks Mathew
aka Shill bidding
That's my opinion as a Power Buyer who has been using ebay since it was born almost 20yrs ago!! Do you really think it's cool to have someone with 10 ratings points keep upping the anty on a product? How would you like to bid on lets say a sony A6300 camera knowing that you should be really trying to buy at $500.00 instead of $800.00 because of the ringers??
The highest bidder wins the auction when that highest bid is made is irrelevant. Bid sniping is a cognitive fallacy.
Thanks Brad
