Ta Phoi Market Fair is one of the prominent traditional markets in Lao Cai Province, located in the northern mountainous region of Vietnam. The market is situated in Ta Phoi Commune, about 10 km southwest of Lao Cai City, in an area where many ethnic minority villages reside, including the Hmong, Dao, Tay, Nung, and other groups. It is an important cultural site, a place for trading goods and preserving the traditional cultural values of the ethnic communities in the mountains.
The Ta Phoi Market Fair takes place once a week, on a fixed day. The market starts early in the morning and lasts until late in the afternoon. The scene at the market is very lively, with people from various places coming to sell agricultural products, handicrafts, livestock, and traditional goods. The market is filled with the sounds of laughter, bargaining, and the sight of large and small colorful baskets, creating a distinctive atmosphere.
The locals primarily trade agricultural products such as corn, sweet potatoes, cassava, fresh vegetables, meat, rice, honey, and medicinal herbs. Especially notable is the area for livestock trading, where animals like buffaloes, cows, pigs, and chickens are brought to be sold, making the livestock section full of life. In addition, the market features unique handicrafts such as brocade, traditional clothing, silver jewelry, and everyday household items.
Ta Phoi Market Fair is not just a place for trading goods but also a place for cultural exchange among the various ethnic groups. The vibrant traditional costumes of the Hmong, Dao, and Tay people can be seen everywhere, creating a colorful scene. People often wear traditional attire when coming to the market, making each market day feel like a festival.
Besides buying and selling, Ta Phoi Market Fair is a place for socializing, where people meet friends, make new acquaintances, and even where young men and women can date and get to know each other following traditional customs.
Visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy local delicacies such as thang co, men men, sour pho, and other traditional dishes from the ethnic communities. Small food stalls and tents around the market, with the aroma of local dishes, invite everyone to stop and taste the food.
