If you read through the comments by Northerners here, you'll notice that most comments from Northerners display full support for the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly. But my questions to our Northern brethren are as follows: 1. If the groomsmen are so poor that they cannot afford the dowry to marry the girls (hence the help offered by the Speaker), then how will they take care of the girls after marriage? 2. I know that family planning is not a favourite topic in the North, so the girls will begin to churn out babies soon after marriage. How will those children be fed, clothed and schooled, or are we about to churn out another group of almajiris? 3. The girls being largely underage, who will foot their medical bills and care for them if they have Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) as a result of underage pregnancy? My Northern brothers/sisters in support of this mass wedding of underaged girls, can you provide satisfactory answers to the above questions?
The way this minister went about it, with a repugnant sense of self-righteousness, is appalling. The Speaker was approached by the people to help with marrying off the girls, whose parents were killed by the general insecurity in Niger State. Marriage and schooling, as you have suggested here, are not mutually exclusive. The girls can be married off to their husbands, who will now have the responsibility of taking care of them. There's a sense of security that the marriage will provide to these girls. Would the minister have talked if these girls weren't going to be married off? How many girls their age are into prostitution and other immoral acts and what has this minister done to stop that? The people in the North view her opposition as coming from ignorance and the way she talked simply shows her contempt for what she did not fully understand. She should have first called the speaker to understand the socio-cultural context before publicly condemning him and annoyingly saying she would go to court. She's a minister and, before she speaks and condemns, she should seek to understand.
@@BrainstormFRW Thank you for your response and for providing context as to the outrage against the Minister from the North. However, my questions remain unanswered. How will men who have a hard time marrying a woman fend for her and the children that are sure to come out of that union? Bear in mind that the matter of extreme poverty is already an issue in the North. How does marrying the girls off provide a solution to the fact that they are vulnerable orphans? Are they being taught any skills by which they can feed themselves first, then, upon marriage, their children, and perhaps, support their husbands? Shouldn't that be the primary concern of the Northern society including the governments? It seems to be (I might be wrong, but this is how it seems to an outsider) that the North is always overly excited about protecting and defending their social-cultural framework rather than challenging it in order to improve it. This social-cultural context you speak about, in my opinion, might well be a major contributor to the pervading poverty in the North. The questions I posed should be deeply considered by all well-intentioned Northerners.
1- Dowry is not what the Hon. Speaker paid, rather he bought the house sets of furniture for orphans. 2- Feeding their children, every Northern feeds his child. This issue of Almajiri started to be out of control with the contribution of the IMF and WB which Obasanjo fully implemented and thus crashed the economy of the region. 3- The age of the children you only heard that from the Minister. But we didn't hear anything from her when the students of FUG were abducted by the bandits, also when the Federal Government increased the tuition fees we didn't hear anything from her. Therefore, she is only concerned when it comes to issue of marriage! Where is this Minister when a Police office was arrested for abducting children and taking to unknown distinction? Was it because the suspect is not a Northerner? Was is because the victims are Northerners.
Your 3rd point honestly speaking deserves no response. What if they were 38 and developed breast cancer, or 24 and developed renal failure or have a stroke at 40, or eclampsia at 29????????
First of all I want to start by saying that marriage is a huge financial burden to the woman's family in Northern Nigeria,The woman is responsible for furnishing the house, which makes it difficult for some families to marry of their daughters. But that asides, that should not be the focus of Government. The goal of we northerners should not only be centred on getting married and bearing children we can't take care of,this is the main reason you find lots of destitute people in the North.Politicians should focus more on making sure that the children of the poor get proper education and also provide them with jobs,so that they can sponsor their weddings themselves. But this idea of Government sponsoring marriages is totally a misplaced priority, its an insult and a ridicule to we Northerners.
Hon. Minister of women afairs. What effort did you make for them b/4 this time ?. have u ever assist or help orphans lost their parents set aside those in or scarted rural communities ?. We are waiting to hear from u Sir.
Why do you have a ministry of social welfare in Niger state? It is the state that has the first responsibility to support vulnerable people within their states . However, they have shown that they are incapable of doing so. Of all the ways to support these orphans, marrying them off is what they could come up with. It just pathetic and nauseating.
@@chinwendua.ejenonu1009Since it's the responsibility of the Niger State ministry of social affairs to take care of the girls then why is the minister meddling of something that is not her responsibility.
So ,this is help now?we know some of these girls will end up being fourth wives or more, why not put them in school, learn a trade or a skill. Kidnapping May not stop for a long time, the boys among the husbands will need to feed the family.what about palliatives to cater for them.
Most Northerners here would gladly support the marriages sadly. The fact that you dont see the marriage asa problem but rather as a solution tells you how backward our thinking has become. There are ways to improve those girls lives. Marrying them out isn't one of them. Shameful.
What is even wrong with some of these northern politicians? So this is all you sleep and wake up and think for your people? What sets of guys are these? Disgusting!
I really recommend the honorable speaker for this effort. Far much better than leaving them to be offering their bodies for some change. And the so called minister of women affairs go and take care of those girls in our higher institutions whom are unable to pay off their tuition first, its only then we will know you are serious and that you are not trying to engage them in the ungodly activities.

I noticed him saying let their parents go ahead and do whatever they want. Meanwhile, the girls have no parents n that's y they are called orphans in the first place. So is there something they are not saying 😔
Let them go into proper marriage if and only the man involved can take care of her and meet her aspirations no issues than to allow men used them at will to which many will abort and abort themselves or die in the process to even create another scenario of orphanage in the process
