I've thought about buying the spring clamps you used for the corner miters, but wonder if they leave marks in the wood that can't be easily dealt with? Do you have any problems with them leaving marks in the wood?
They leave such a small dimple (depending on the hardness of the wood) that you barely notice it. If it really bothered you, it's small enough to fill it in with sawdust when you sand and a small dab of glue or such.
I ended up just using a spray can of shellac. It helped to pop the grain and since this will be up and out of the way for the most part, after a few coats, it's plenty of protection.

Nice little project Matt. The applied moulding is a nice touch and I like the maple. Did you apply a finish of any sort? If not, any plans to?
