Karloff had a presence like no other actors before or after him. He was born to play roles like this and I'm so grateful that this piece of work and many others have been preserved so future generations can enjoy them. ❤
@psycho-ts7ws that's not bad either but this was better than the 1940s kharis ones. 1999 will always be number 1 of all time. Only issue with 1959 lee version which is the same problem with the rest of the kharis films is that the mummy being controlled by some priest like a robot instead of being it's own conscious character
It's great that Helen saves herself from Imhotep instead of a man coming to her rescue. But I feel bad for Imhotep. All he wanted was to be reunited with his lady love. He only killed people who got in the way. There was no murderous rampage as in other horror films.
Yes. In this initial one, there was no "that HAND" menace, which was what a later Priest of Amon-Ra would warn of, specifically a living mummy to become "a RAGING MONSTER the likes of which the world has never known!!" To that, all I can say is: "It's darned good thing it did not happen!"
" The only thing ridiculous is that you actually think people overacted like that in real life 1000 years ago." Don't be a fool. People in ancient Egypt (which was well over a 1000 years ago) didn't "act," they just lived in "real life." These are actors, who are acting. Ancient Egyptians also didn't speak English. The characters here are doing what they are doing to create a MOOD, which is also why they speak in an archaic for with thine and thou, etc. Like something out of the Bible. If all movies were exactly like "real life," there would be no point in going to the movies.
Like zant from twilight princess Zelda and skull kid of Majora's mask! But weather you were a victim of anything who you worked for treated you bad whatever, or what if you did wrong that you didn't know of! Still doesn't give you anybody the right to do whatever you want!
'Twas that boiling bath of Natron and the sight of the Evisceration Knife, that filled her with dread, as to what laid ahead. I always wondered what became of the Nubian a stirring?
She is a reincarnation of the original mummified princess. He was buried alive when put in the tomb, so he was able to be resurrected and still have his original soul that he had during the Egyptian times. As for looking so good (human) for a resurrected mummy, it’s a movie. Still a good/strong plot for its release in 1932 in my opinion though.
Honestly it's just a little too slow and serious for my taste but if it had a remake like the fly did with young Jeff gold bloom that'd be cool. Or the attack of the 50 foot woman remake, haven't seen it but I hear it's better than the original.
*She speaks the ancient language and asks for mercy...and it is given* ( *Too bad for the six-million Hebrews who spoke ancient words as well only one lifetime ago...but the 'God of their Fathers Abraham and Isaac' never answered and allowed them to become 'smoke & ashes'* )
Those six-million Hebrews spoke Yiddish (not particularly 'ancient'), and/or a variety of European languages of their countries of origin. Hebrew was only known to rabbis and learned folks back then. Hebrew, as a general language of communication, was only 'resurrected' in modern day Israel.
This is what is special about the original mummy. At the end it was the woman herself who saved herself and not any of the other people. It was her desire for love and for life… a love of God so to speak…that saved her.
I will never know why Stephen Sommers looked at this movie in 1999 or even the 1959 version with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and thought...'I wonder if an audience wants me to completely abandon the integrity of this classic and make a badly CGI'd monstrosity'. And apparently you proved him right because that got 2 more movies, a straight to DVD spin off trilogy and an animated series. And some ACTUALLY think the 99 version was the original Mummy. 😔
Dislike the 1999 one all you want, its a fun movie, could it be more in the spirit of the classics? Sure but much like this it was also a product of its time. And is superior to the tom cruise film regardless.
This movie is in ridiculously good shape for something from 1932. Slick AF, and really fun. Karloff is so awesome.
It's really well edited. So well that we can imagine the special effects!
@@jonathanwpressman Karloff was an amazing actor.

@kfures3469 facts. He was the best mummy by far although to be fair he also had the most dialogues among all actors who played the title character.
Karloff was GREAT! He played Frankenstein’s monster too, for the first three movies at least. He’s also in House of Frankenstein if you’re interested

I’ve gotta see this film it has some of the best writing of a scary movie.
He’s in pretty good shape for a mummy
Now Imhotep is free, he suffered enough :).
As a mummy though?
The movie was decades ahead of its time in its portrayal of the female lead and how she manages to defeat the monster and save herself all on her own.
“Thou shalt rise again”
2:20 and 3:56
I love that line so much.
9:00 death is only the beginning
The woman in this scene looks like Drew Barrymore. She could her grandmother.
Drew Barrymore's actual grandmother was the actress Dolores Costello, married to John Barrymore. Look her up; there are plenty of pics of her.
A truly creepy ending......a no win situation for both sides.
Boris was The perfect Mummy a Legend Forever with Compliments 👍👍👍 Greetings Form Switzerland 🇨🇭 Jogi 🐻

Vampires need blood in order to keep their youth, as for mummies…
