    Seems like the F-22 is cherished, whereas the Tiffy is the ultimate bruiser, go get ‘em workhorse. I have so much admiration for the designers of the Typhoon airframe and the EJ200 - they are a match made in heaven. Tiffy forever!

    I’m from Peterborough the old lanacaster pilots apparently back in the day practised low level flying by going under the electric pylons 😂
    I drive by them still now out in the flat fens and to think those guys were taking lancasters under those cables is insane

      T/W for Typhoon is 1.25, F-22 is 1.18 to 1.37 depending on the nozzles been used, round nozzles get best performance, flat nozzles least

    • @julietlima5564

      @@kevin-l7r7p
      Publicly the F-22 has a listed thrust to weight ratio of 1.25.
      The whole thing about flat nozzles producing less thrust over conventional round nozzles come from a publicly released finding that Sukhoi did with an Flanker. However despite this Pratt&Witney and Lockheed engineers managed to get over the loss in thrust. While it is true that the F-22 could have had more thrust with conventional round nozzles, the loss in thrust for the F-22 with its F-119 engines is nowhere near as much as the loss Sukhoi experienced with their early flat nozzle experiments. That and the flat triangular shape of the F-22 as other benefits such as better rearward stealth and reduced IR signature.

  • @castnoshadow82lr48

    The raptor in my view is the envy of every airforce what an absolute beast of a fighter.
    The typhoon suits the needs of the raf just fine the uk isn’t trying to achieve total air dominance.
    We need reliable jets that are cheap to maintain the performance of that thing supersedes its cost.
    It can bomb, intercept and dogfight.
    The only thing we don’t use it for is launching it off carriers.

      It's fair to want to know and he was very polite by choosing something to say in which he can be complimentary. In another sense we should very much want to know what we could improve. We know there are aircraft out there that are better in one aspect or another and should be learning from it IMO, rather than tying our egos into the thing.

      It has more to do with it being so fast and being super maneuverable, such that any input you make down low can get you in trouble real quick if you aren't super aware and always staying ahead of the jet.

      Your comment reminds me of some of Sharky Ward’s stories about Falkland Island missions that he did solo and at night. One of them involved flying way out off of west Falkland to the full range of the sea harrier. With no wing man, if he had had to eject, the chances of even finding his remains would’ve been nil. The poms are hardcore.

  • @WarHoover
    @WarHoover 17 днів тому +3

    Whaaat? No time below 500' in a fast jet until the Typhoon exchange tour? Is this a regular thing for US Air Force pilots?
    We were regularly flying low levels at 200 feet (and crossing ridgelines lower than that), dodging birds, Cessnas, and hang-gliders at 500+ knots in Navy jet training . . . before we even received our wings.
    Hell, I even flew below sea level (Southern California - lots of military pilots will know where) at 500 knots while still a student.
    I'm not blowing my own horn here - there was nothing special about this and I assumed my Air Force brothers and sisters were doing the same thing. Hell, the old F-111 bubbas were doing some CRAZY stuff down low back in the day (at night, even in IMC with their terrain following radar - no thanks!).
    For the other Air Force fast-movers out there - is this guy's story representative of today's student experience? I'm not talking specifically about the Raptor community, but I would assume that you guys were flying low levels in the T-38 at least . . .

    • @rogerbiggerstaff3293
      @rogerbiggerstaff3293 17 днів тому +1

      F-22s don't fight at 500'. The only reason you'd be flying low is to avoid radar. F-22s don't need to fly low for that. They're going to fight at 50-65k feet, where they get maximum range for their AAMs.

    • @WarHoover
      @WarHoover 13 днів тому

      @@rogerbiggerstaff3293 I get it. But I'm surprised he didn't get more low-level time flying T-38s as a student. Presumably before he found out what jet he would fly operationally after winging.
      The Navy has (or at least did when I went through) a low-level syllabus for student jet aviators before they ever find out what fleet aircraft they will be assigned. So, future F-35C drivers would get low-level training the same as their Rhino and Growler counterparts, even if they don't get much low-level time after F-35 transition (which is doubtful - I'm guessing there are plenty of F-35Cs out there flying low-levels because it's still a relevant for a strike fighter and . . . a lot of fun!)
      I don't know that much about the Air Force jet training pipeline, but I assumed there are many similarities to the Navy's course - which is why I'm surprised to hear any Air Force fighter pilot stating that they had not flown at 500 knots below 500 feet until a Typhoon exchange tour. Because all Navy tactical jet pilots have done this on at least 5 low-level routes prior to getting their wings and finding out what gray jet they will transition to.

    • @FS2K4Pilot
      @FS2K4Pilot 17 днів тому +3

      Not really. It just means they’re being flown differently. The F-22 is perfectly capable of standing on its tail right off the runway, it’s just more efficient to execute the standard unrestricted takeoff profile.

    • @RichelieuUnlimited
      @RichelieuUnlimited 17 днів тому +6

      It probably is. Based on public figures the Eurofighter has a higher thrust-to-weight ratio and a more aerodynamically optimized shape, likely granting it the best acceleration and climb rate of any series production jet to date.
