I’m in my mid thirties. Puerto Rican, lived nearly all of my life in 🇺🇸…. folks that know me well might think some of my musical tastes are “eclectic” or “out of the norm” for what the typical i fiancé’s where for me and my generation. I know NOTHING about Irish music…. But I know a powerful, GENUINE performance when I see one.. this is AMAZING.
When Luke died, the band disbanded and it was quite a long time before they re-formed. When they did so, they picked as their first venue the little Scottish Highland village of Muir of Ord, just a short distance from my home village of Beauly. I was away at the time, but, on the strength of my love for the band, my brother and mother went to the concert where they were blown away by the performance. In particular, they were moved by Barney, who, on being introduced to do his usual solo, said simply "This is for Luke," and performed his routine with tears streaming down his face from start to finish.
Here i am sitting, watching the rendition of Raglan Road, with tears streaming down my face and i catch myself missing a man, who i have never met... what music can do to you... :'-) R.I.P. Mr. Kelly and all the other Dubliners who had to leave us already! Until we finally meet!
When I was growing up in the 60's, we had an old record player, and 3 LP's, 2 Dubliners, which were my Dads, and 1 Guy Mitchell, which was my Mums. It was all we had to play, and they were played ALL THE TIME!, so this really brought back memories for me. By the 70;s we had a fancy stereo, and a lot more LP's, but after Luke died, my father never bought another Dubliners LP, and the 2 we had were played out, I inherited them when Dad died, they would be quare and crackly by now, but they are precious to me. 2 days ago my Dads cousin died, she is near the last of that generation, my nephew down in County Clare was listening to Luke Kelly singing "Thank you for the days", when his conservatory door blew open, his baby was sitting in his wee chair, and he started laughing, he looked like he was looking at something or someone, and he giggled for ages, we are taking it as a sign that Dad met his cousin, and he popped in to let us all know that all is good, and what better song than "Thank you for the days" :-)
I am born 1990 of County Armagh, Garvaghy Road, and Luke Kelly rings in my ears when the yards are hard. Erin Go Bragh, they will never beat the Irish spirit! ☘️🇮🇪💚

I met an old English lady once in Chicago who used to court Luke Kelly. Great stories from her. Claimed Luke was the love of her life and the man she ended up marrying she told him as well.
That's a fantastic documentary. I was a boy when Luke died and thought this was all old fart music anyway so it's great now that I know better to be able to see what a great talent I missed.
I’m an a 64 yr old American who just discovered the Dubliners. I knew a few of their classic songs but I’m enjoying hearing everything. The Pogues as well
Was fortunate to be in front row at a Dubliners concert 1970/71 in Corby ,was a great night ,consider myself fortunate to have seen such a great band of musicians.A story I found out many years later was that a member of the audience passed a note backstage to say it was her husband's birthday and they were having a party back home after the show, and that they were welcome, and gave their address .Sure enough a bit after they arrived home, a knock at the door ,and there they were. Wish I had been there.
My father and his mate Martin brought Ciaran Bourke back to my grandparents house in Lawrence court in Corby after a gig in 67 or 68 . He enjoyed some hospitality, entertained the people there for a couple of hours and made his way back to the hotel at 4 or 5 in the morning. A gentleman, as they all were.
TWO banjos! I went to see about a gig in a local club that was in a high-crime neighborhood. I forgot that my banjo was in the back seat of my car. While I was inside the club, chatting with the owner, I realized that I left the banjo in the car. I rushed out, but my worst fears were confirmed....the back window was broken, and now there were TWO banjos in the back seat!
I know not what a Socialist is - I have owned a VW Beatle, currently own a Mitsubishi, have been drunk a many time on Russian Vodka, buy Made in China daily, smoked a cigar from South America and loved life with music the entire damn time!
Magical 2 hours of memories, stories , music & voice . Luke died ,( sadly for me) when I was in my teens , a true master of his art ! Long may his songs an voice be remembered, and indeed they will ! May God Bless him.
Today is his death anniversary on January 30th, but his free irish spirit continue alive in our hearts forever. We love you too much, our dearest Luke Kelly .
His singing of "The Town I Loved So Well" is my personal favourite song, of all time, across all genres. I am biased a little as it was the song my dad wished played at his funeral. :*)
many a year back I rode a bus to New Grange Luke was on the bus with a young companion and I had the opportunity to speak with him we talked of Irish history and the benefits of blackberry leaf to the voice at that point I knew nothing o the dubliners and only knew o his fame from fellow travelers on the bus I had no idea I was chatting with a god of folk music

I love ya all Luke Kelly the voice of Ireland what a group the Dubliners no worry the High Kings being the sons of the greatest Irish bands ever, I mean EVER. Thank you all for your blessing of song to remind us where we came from and what were seeking.
Greatest group ro represent dublin I seen them a100 times in dublin pubs in the 1960s So glad you enjoyed their music ps when the Irish Telephone system went on strike in the early 80s luke turned up with a crate of Guinness to show his support a 100ps genuine guy is luke.
Luke Kelly died in 1984, and some of these recordings were made 20 years before that. I feel sorry for “Movin on” and his 3 supporters who lack the generosity of spirit to give credit to the incredible voice and talent of Luke so instead resort to criticising the quality of a video some of which is 60 years old. Pretty pathetic.😢
Everything from Pearl Jam to Slipknot is played by me everyday but I will always love the voice of the man... Mi Da brought us up listening to The Dubliners, Tommy Makem & The Clancy Bros etc, but Luke Kelly will remain my favourite voice... just beautiful.
I am proud to be Irish I wouldn't want to be on any other crew Never lost the accent been in uk 30 years Irish and proud of it Luke Kelly superb artist must try and learn and play an instrument in 2017 Dubliners a legend
Only wannabees lose there accent , they want to sound like those around them ,I'd an uncle he lived in bermingham 53years and had the strongest Dublin accent you'll hear
Not knowing of their history or legacy, but liked their music when I heard it first time 4o years ago - just never listened to any music in general, nor any specific styles or cultures and certainly not known of these gentlemen. But now I am researching, reading and listening to a lot of their music, interviews & legacy. So sad that I missed their music, art, politics & humors, but making up for past neglect.
He had undoubtedly a great gift as a performer (what diction!) but what was unexpected was his capacity to appreciate the complex emotions of a parent when he had never been one. Amazing capacity of empathy. We love his voice and passion. I was born and brought up in Dublin in the 60s and 70s and so regret never having seen him live.
I dont believe that's so rare it simply depends on how much time the individual dedicates to contemplating life and the meaning of......at least in previous generation.....sadly ...empathy is lost.
I have been fortunate to see the Dubliners live in my home town on a few occasions. Great music, great performance, great atmosphere. Thank you for this video.
I'm overcome with joy in appreciation for Luke Kelly and all the others walking in his footsteps before and after. Blessings may follow forever friends

My dad was born in Limerick, and he introduced me to Luke at a young age. We often debated the merits of Dick Gaughan’s or Luke’s version of On Raglan Road, a close race. The part about ‘let grief be a fallen leaf’ was read at his funeral. A nice circle I felt. Luke Kelly’s voice is heard in my house every day, as are Kavanagh’s words.
Think maybe it's hard to improve on what's been said a brilliant man a voice that will never be matched with more feeling than single singer but let's not forget the rest of the brilliant group and passing members never a song or tune played I never enjoyed and that as a whole is Irish music

That's a fantastic documentary. I was a boy when Luke died and thought this was all old fart music anyway so it's great now that I know better to be able to see what a great talent I missed.
The good ones always get taken too soon . But Luke Kelly voice & music will last a lifetime.😢🙏🏻🥃.
Such a fabulous singer. Loved him.
I’m an a 64 yr old American who just discovered the Dubliners. I knew a few of their classic songs but I’m enjoying hearing everything. The Pogues as well
Every performance full of passion, he gave his all what a performer !
Lule Kelly's passion is an inspiration.
Rip Luke Kelly best Irish singer of all time God bless him❤
"The Performer."
What a great voice ...
TWO banjos! I went to see about a gig in a local club that was in a high-crime neighborhood. I forgot that my banjo was in the back seat of my car. While I was inside the club, chatting with the owner, I realized that I left the banjo in the car. I rushed out, but my worst fears were confirmed....the back window was broken, and now there were TWO banjos in the back seat!
the greatest singer that I have ever heard

I'm listening and loving it all over again. I'll never get tired of his music, and his iconic voice. ❤
I know not what a Socialist is - I have owned a VW Beatle, currently own a Mitsubishi, have been drunk a many time on Russian Vodka, buy Made in China daily, smoked a cigar from South America and loved life with music the entire damn time!
A beautiful Artist, unashamedly down to earth beyond the airs and graces of prima donnas!!
Magical 2 hours of memories, stories , music & voice . Luke died ,( sadly for me) when I was in my teens , a true master of his art ! Long may his songs an voice be remembered, and indeed they will ! May God Bless him.
Rip Luke Kelly the best ever never forget your songs from the heart beautiful
Today is his death anniversary on January 30th, but his free irish spirit continue alive in our hearts forever. We love you too much, our dearest Luke Kelly .
His singing of "The Town I Loved So Well" is my personal favourite song, of all time, across all genres. I am biased a little as it was the song my dad wished played at his funeral. :*)
Squiffilect 😢❤️🥃
many a year back I rode a bus to New Grange Luke was on the bus with a young companion and I had the opportunity to speak with him we talked of Irish history and the benefits of blackberry leaf to the voice at that point I knew nothing o the dubliners and only knew o his fame from fellow travelers on the bus I had no idea I was chatting with a god of folk music
Decades later his death still makes me sad as hell...yet still I return.
I share the same feeling!
@@daisypeters3216 wonderful singer how he has left us with amazing memories

They never died, they're among us, as long as somebody remembers you you're not dead. The God of melody
Geoff, you hit the nail on the head! There is so much negativity on the new technological platforms but such videos like this is an absolute treasure. I can visit my musical hero’s now anytime day or night. Long may it last! Luke Kelly, Ronnie Drew, Ciaran Bourke, Barney McKenna, Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem thanks for teaching me how to sing! The gift that keeps on giving.
In Death We Live.☘🇮🇪
I love ya all Luke Kelly the voice of Ireland what a group the Dubliners no worry the High Kings being the sons of the greatest Irish bands ever, I mean EVER. Thank you all for your blessing of song to remind us where we came from and what were seeking.
Remind. Me of my brother. Kevin m
Greatest group ro represent dublin I seen them a100 times in dublin pubs in the 1960s
So glad you enjoyed their music ps when the Irish Telephone system went on strike in the early 80s luke turned up with a crate of Guinness to show his support a 100ps genuine guy is luke.
Who could dislike this? It boggles the mind
Buncha Tans, no doubt.
In fairness, as a documentary and in terms of video production it is a fairly shoddy piece of work.
the english
Some one like that Ed Sullivan who wouldn't let them play Seven Drunken Nights.
I.m irish my zelf.love the dubliners. Luke was ireland for me.good Old ireland 🇮🇪
So sad have lost him. But he is alive in our hearts and our souls FOREVER.🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Everything from Pearl Jam to Slipknot is played by me everyday but I will always love the voice of the man... Mi Da brought us up listening to The Dubliners, Tommy Makem & The Clancy Bros etc, but Luke Kelly will remain my favourite voice... just beautiful.
Luke Kelly.... RIP
Whenever Luke Sang Magical Things Happened That's For Sure! 🤗🧔🎙️🎸🎻🎼🎼🎼🎵🎵🎶🎶🇮🇪
I am proud to be Irish I wouldn't want to be on any other crew
Never lost the accent been in uk 30 years
Irish and proud of it
Luke Kelly superb artist must try and learn and play an instrument in 2017
Dubliners a legend
Richard o'neill Did you learn an instrument?
Only wannabees lose there accent , they want to sound like those around them ,I'd an uncle he lived in bermingham 53years and had the strongest Dublin accent you'll hear
Loved and always lived next door to the irish, but they will always be the first to sing about Ireland and the first to leave it.
"Kelly the Boy from Killan" is a super Irish rebel song.
Simply great, a part of my youth.
Dubs to the core...! They are like a country within a country...
So wonderful to see the full version. Thank you.
What a performer!!! Full of passion, intense and so bloody Irish!!!!
Great documentary. Love that they include the song performances in their entirety.
As where you Ronnie..all of you were gold... and gifted us with such great musical moments.
wow the greatest dubliners line up and now all sadly passed away..well never see the likes again
John is still alive
It is now march 2020 Corona hits the world, Luke's music gives me comfort and strength even more now then the first time I heard the Dubliners sing life way back in the 70th's Thanks boys do not forget this great minstrel.
Holed up in my apartment in NYC riding out the encroaching plague with some fine Irish music. Cheers to my fellow humans. Lay low and live long.

Ooooh I luuvvv the Irish voice and sound (my Irish roots) But I need an interpreter. I am in Australia and as soon as I hear an Irish voice - my head turns round and I have to say hello. Being a granny - I feel I can do this now, whereas I would have been too shy in my younger days or youth. A benefit of getting old and grey. So Hello to all my Irish family and friends that are still strangers, until I meet you ;-)
There are no strangers, only friends we havn't yet met
I am Frisian and dig totally Irish folk music.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Love the Dublilners.
I'm sad for anyone who doesn't like the Irish without having a great night out in my beloved Ɓelfast.
Luke Kelly. Legend.
I love that Dublin attitude. Barny reminds me of my teacher, Ronnie of my uncle or maybe my granddad, and I can see a bit of luke in every respectable auld codger I know
There is not a week goes by that I don't listen to luke and the dubliners I went up in the sixtes on my bike to see them in saggart
I'm 76 years old now and I still love them
Luke was a man of song for ALL people. Celebrity? I dont know. But he was set on putting songs out there for every human being. I believe that. Bless him. A fantastic human being. ♥
Most amazing connection with Celtic music, and every other connection in life..
Thank you.I love their strings and voice only.......... long live The Irish! From an old man here.
