I've said it elsewhere, but, I'll say it again: That acoustic guitar may be the best acoustic guitar riff and sound ever recorded -- it's otherworldly in its perfection.
Joe DiMaggio was a great baseball player for the Yankees and a hero to many. So in the context of the song it's like "our nation needs a hero right now".
The song was written by S & G for the movie “The Graduate. It has been used many times in cinema and television and is a widely recognized anthem by baby boom and gen-x aged folks as it was part of Pop Culture to make it a familiar tune even if they didn’t know who performed it. The song was featured in the movie “Forrest Gump” as well as “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” among others.
some of Paul Simon's many brilliant songs: Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, American tune, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Slip Slidin' Away, Still Crazy After All These Years, Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War, Graceland, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, Hearts and Bones, Kodachrome.
Joe DiMaggio was a famous baseball player, he was married to Marilyn Monroe. This song was in the movie The Graduate and Mrs. Robinson was having an affair with a young man. Great movie, you should watch, with a soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel.
Joltin' Joe DiMaggio was the most famous and beloved baseball player of his era, and was Paul Simon's childhood hero. He holds the record for most games in a row with a hit, 56 consecutive games. Heroes were in short supply in the 1960s when this was written.
I'm an Aussie but I know Joe Di Maggio was a famous baseball star. He was also married to Marilyn Monroe. I remember he appeared once in an episode of The Brady Bunch. This song is from the movie The Graduate starring a very young Dustin Hoffman
Joe DiMaggio (aka, The Yankee Clipper, and Joltin' Joe) was a 13 year centerfielder for the Yankees - 3 time MVP and 13 times on the All Stars, career batting average .591, and every kid's hero - no matter team preference. It's reported he put fresh flowers on his ex-wife's grave every week until he died - her name was Marilyn Monroe.
Finally back to watch this! You gotta do "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon... it's awesome and I think you'll LOVE the lyrics just as much as the music!! It's super fun!! And YESSSS!! "Mrs. Robinson" was used in "American Pie"!!! Holy crap when you brought the movie up, I laughed SO hard!! I LOVE those movies (EXCEPT for the stupid Band Camp spin-offs!! UGH!!)..... I've been requesting American Pie for quite a while (somewhere else) and dumbazz movies (Sorry!!!) like "Super Troopers" and "Starship Troopers" keep getting the most likes.... I don't get it!!?? Lol!! "American Pie" ROCKS! Glad to know you like it too!! And SORRY, I needed to vent!! ;) ;) Great reaction as always Biz!! See ya on the next one!!
You will get lots of comments telling you who DiMaggio is and about the major motion picture that this song is featured in. So I will skip that. This song is mainly fun song with lyrics not to be taken too seriously and with a very catchy melody. Song takes a more serious turn when Paul says every way you lose and nation turns its lonely eyes to you. I think Paul, who wrote all their songs, is saying America lacks a hero. Simon and Garfunkel were friends since a young age in the NYC area, so they got along well personally and musically. That changed in late sixties when Garfunkel got offers to appear in major motion pictures, starting with the classic, Catch 22, and then a starring role with Jack Nicholson in Carnal Knowledge. Paul Simon got tired of trying to put an album together with a MIA Garfunkel and quit the group to launch a fine career as a singer/songwriter in the seventies and eighties. For first listen to Paul Simon post Garfunkel, I recommend Diamonds on the soles of her shoes, African concert live with Ladysmith Black Mambazo
I have always loved this the music and the tone is great alone but the story it tells - leaves me wanting to know more about these people. I know it was the movie "The Graduate " but even so Simon & Garfunkel always have 'dope ass lyrics '
Paul Simon live at Hyde Park singing Call Me Al. Great performance. Mrs. Robinson was a middle age women in the movie The Graduate who seduced the teenage son of a family her social circle.
The song references substance abuse, social and personal hypocrisy, social class, the state of the nation and politics, the aimlessness of the nation back then (no more heroes like baseball legend Jolting Joe DiMaggio) .... all of it in Paul's usual songwriting style. It was the height of the Vietnam war and the younger generation was really turning away from their parents' values and hypocrisies...all of this could be seen in the movie The Graduate where this song came from.
My hubby just learned to play this on the guitar! Been hearing it alot lately! Great song! Try You Can Call Me Al & 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon.
@@watchbizmatik Wasn't funny when the "guy" failed me in 12 grade. I had to go to summer school to get my diploma... I got a "B" without trying. If you weren't into sports you failed. I say he failed us outsiders
I posted a comment earlier on why Simon and Garfunkel broke up. Based on a later comment or 2, I don't want to leave the impression that they were bitter enemies at least as far as I know. There certainly was some harsh words, particularly from Paul Simon, when the breakup occurred. But the 2 men have had at least a few reunion concerts where they sang old S&G songs and even some of the Simon songs post Garfunkel with Art Garfunkel singing along with Paul. These 2 men have a long history together dating back to their days as kids in NYC. That kind of bond and the music they shared for so long isn't easy to break and I don't think the official breakup of Simon and Garfunkel completely broke the bond of friendship that they shared.
Not many songs in the world like this one. Understatedly awesome. 🔥👍 If you are encountering this song in movies, it's most likely as a reference to a "cougar" like Mrs. Robinson, from the movie "The Graduate."
They ended up hating each other, Paul Simon figured out he didn’t need a partner, and he dumped Art Garfunkel . Please react to Jackson Browne “Rosie” it will definitely make you smile.
This tune was a part of the movie soundtrack (for "The Graduate" a comedy drama, starring Dustin Hoffman in 1968 about a young man that has an affair with his GF's mother and whose name was Mrs. Robinson. Joe DiMaggio was a baseball great for the Yankees in the 1940's. They did about five songs in the film. Another folk rock artist that composed the music score/soundtrack for a comedy film around this time was Cat Stevens, who did "Harold and Maude", about a suicidal young man that falls in love with a lively old lady.
Analyze the song backwards…en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_DiMaggio is all about loss of innocence and cynicism in the system and leaders…the second verse is an affair with Mrs Robinson, the first verse is a person coming of age in the system now back to the last verse joe DiMaggio was a great baseball player who married Marilyn Monroe (America’s pin-up sweetheart) … loss of heroes and innocence
In regard to Simon's work with Garfunkel as opposed to his solo work, I like both but not equally well. Paul Simon's greatest songs were written with S&G. Did Paul ever write a solo that's better than Bridge Over Troubled Water, Sounds of Silence, Scarborough Fair, Boxer, America, I Am a Rock, Homeward Bound? Even some of the non-hits are great S&G songs, For Emily Wherever I may find her, Old Friends/Bookends, Only Living Boy in NYC, Overs, Fakin It, Hazy Shade of Winter, etc etc etc. There are many post-Garfunkel songs that I like. Most were named below by me and others. Lyrically, the only post Garfunkel song that compares to S&G is American Tune, which is one of the few solo songs that sounds like a S&G song. I think Paul made a deliberate attempt to break away from the S&G sound when he went solo and achieved that goal for most part. Remember, these are all my opinions. Some may like the solo work better. I think it's very good but not at the level of the best of S&G.
💯 "Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard" is a great one! "The Sound of Silence" is very cool; but Disturb's version is even better, imho! Check em out BizMatik! 🔥

Except S&G are being ironic/sarcastic.

DiMaggio had a 56 game hitting streak ,one that still stands .Probably never be eclipsed

the song is much better than the movie. an overrated movie, IMO. but a fantastic song.
