The rise of social media has massively contributed to this. Being able to connect through Facebook and Twitter and the ease by which you can form groups of like interests has given people ample opportunities to congregate and create echo chambers where they can convince themselves that their degenerate behavior is normal. Now they're transing kids and trying to normalize pedophilia. The internet is both the best and worst thing to ever happen to human development.
It is interesting to look back though on such an early argument about the Internet enabling terrible people to come together and reinforce each other's terrible opinions. Certainly we feel that more with each passing election.
