In a lot of ways, I believe this route is justified in it's own twisted way. Undertale has always taken concepts in video games and made them meta in one way or another. The whole premise of the game is based off the concept of "What if killing your enemies was bad?" The premise that your character is referred to as a they/them could also be since a lot of silent protagonists are an insert of the player, you can't really know what gender they are. And resetting the game is akin to throwing all your newfound friends back into their prison. In that sense, Undertale Yellow focuses on the fact the game is a Prequel pretty heavily. Meaning, the events of this game are predetermined. Clover can't be allowed to have a happy ending. Isn't allowed to achieve their goals. The moment they fell into the Underground, they were already dead. The castle was always going to be their coffin. The game was rigged from the start. And if you don't fully commit to one path or the other, you get killed by "Your Best Friend" for the sake of being used as a weapon. In fact, nobody truly sees Clover as a person in this game... only a means to an end. This is truly an unjust game. The possibility of victory is nearly zero. But if you pick up your piece and get to shooting, then Clover survives, completes the mission and saves the Souls of five other children. The cost is high, but victory is achievable. And to be abundantly clear, I am not advocating Genocide here. But given the choice between becoming a weapon used for the freedom of monsterkind and the subsequent eradication of humanity or the your own freedom from a cruel, manufactured cycle at the cost of dozens of lives... what would you honestly pick? It's a hell of an ultimatum. And honestly, I think it makes it far more compelling than Undertale's decisions. There, you are an omnipotent god who decides if a race of people gets to see the sunrise or if they get ground down to dust. Not to meantion that in the end of the Genocide route, not even you get a happy ending. The game literally discourages you from taking that route every chance it gets. But in Undertale Yellow? Both routes carry equal weight. Clover isn't omnipotent... they're as much a part of the game as anyone else, being manipulated by Flowey who is determined to get what he wants: fun. Sick, twisted, fun. In my own opinion, Clover does remember snippets of the previous runs in the Genocide route... and they're fed up with being a plaything, a weapon, a toy. I don't even think it's right calling that route "Genocide". I think a better name would be the Guilty route, because everyone is basically guilty of murder or attempted murder. What Clover does is dark, but still morally grey. If someone shoots at you, harms you, uses you, do you give the other cheek every time until you don't have a cheek left, or do you lash out, protect yourself and others, potentially ending the aggressor in the process? This ultimatum is awful, but that's what makes this game so interesting.
Yeah, and it also explains why they only attack the enemies that show aggression first. Clover never actually kills anyone who hasn't already shown the intention to hurt them, and only gives them "justice" when they "deserve" it. They go out of their way to kill *anyone and everyone* who is willing to attack them first, to find and eliminate anyone who had the potential to hurt the other humans. It's still twisted and morally wrong, but it can still be justified as giving them "justice".

Humanity catches wind of a monsterous, god-like being that killed seven human kids with and army of monsters that can achieve that same power by taking their souls and what would be the first response? All I'm saying is that it is almost stars aligning levels of LUCK that in the Pacifist Route of OG Undertale that humans and monsters came together to live in peace, assuming that is the case. Because there'd be no winning against a god who could create even more gods by taking out his enemies.

Actually, I think you kill more monsters who weren't trying to hurt you than ones who do. Though from Clover's perspective, the alternative (other than dying) is to break the barrier & leave a bunch of monsters to roam free on the surface who can't even tell when they're killing a human. Not a great option from Clover's perspective.
It's not even just not knowing how to. She _physically_ can't keep going. Her body just can't keep up with her unyielding will, which just makes it even more tragic

The two songs "Birds of a feather" and "flock together" finish one saying. The people traveling together are martlet and clover right? Well it would make just sense that if the saying is split in two, each theme represents each of the 2 characters, birds of a feather being martlet's theme and flock together being clovers. In both situations the theme plays when clover and martlet are together in a certain situation, in pacifist, that being friends, but in genocide, a fight to the death, so i would say the flock together leitmotif is the theme of clover AND martlet together) and is very different from remedy as a whole. Instead of sounding threatening, the song sounds almost... triumphant at times. That's because clover is literally about to win. Martlet is no longer the boss here, it's Clover, hence why this is their theme song playing. Just like enemy retreating is theorised to be clover's deafult battle theme, this is their remedy, their ultimatum theme. If this still doesn't make sense, literally just look up the definition of retribution. "Punishment inflicted on someone as vengeance for a wrong or criminal act", the word vengeance is literally there, how could this not have been more obvious, that is exactly what clover thinks they are doing at that moment.
Don't forget that they're still doing justice They're not evil, they just didn't have a choice He's stuck in an infinite death loop by Flowey, powerless to do anything about it Unless...they can actually gain enough power to do stop it... Technically, the neutral route is the least justified one, because you really just killed someone innocent just for the sake of it, with no accomplishment made

This is what Clover hears. It has never been what Martlet hears. All Martlets hears is the sound of gunshots that pierce the air, and the sound of wind blowing. This never WAS Martlet's theme, it's been yours all along. It carries the Enemy Retreating motif, and as Martlet states... "Sometimes monsters hear their own battle music in battle to pump them up and keep them *DETERMINED* for the battle." If this carries the Enemy Retreating motif, that means that Enemy Retreating is the theme Clover hears in his head when he's being a monster. When he needs determination to keep doing this. When he's right at the end, he decides to take a new path on the Enemy Retreating, and for the final battle of his genocidal rampage... Retribution. Retribution for his sins... Clover thinks it's possible, or someone ELSE thinks it's possible... Flowey. Flowey doesn't understand the killing of the robots in the Steamworks, and Flowey asks Clover to stop... for redemption, for a chance at Retribution. But we as the player, don't care about Flowey's pleads. Zenith Martlet's name turns yellow at the end, but all that means on a geno route is that... She's one hit away from dying. When the Zenith Martlet fight starts... there is no redemption. No Retribution for you. Can't even spare ASGORE at that point because his dumbass just got BIDEN BLASTED!!! before Clover or you could make a decision.
In this case I view "Retribution" more as Clover's own sense of justice twisted into vegeance. It's not "the song is trying to tell the player and/or clover to repent for their sins" it's "the MONSTERS will repent for their sins" Yes, what Clover/The Player does in this case is just as unforgiveable as any other genocide route, but it's not senseless killing in a way, it's revenge. Violence breeds violence, and revenge, too, is a sin. But monsterkind... They sinned too. None of them even remember the other humans' names, Asgore's killed 5, Flowey's tortured thousands, and not to mention the countless deaths Clover went through before the game even started. At the end of the day, they don't need a paragon or hero. Clover is no hero. But they don't need a villain, and Clover is no villain. Because one is only a hero when they win a war and write that fact into the history books, someone is only a villain when they lose to said hero. This adventure won't be spoken of, when the game ends, when the player leaves and Clover walks past the barrier? The souls move onto their afterlife, and this is just a chapter to our yellow soul'ed protag's life. Something they might regret, or might not by how twisted they are at this point. At the end of the day, justice will be delivered.
