It's funny how these NKs risking their lives to escape to a democratic country and the ones living in those democratic countries take their freedom for granted and fantasize about socialism/communism.
I remember that one NK Soldier who tried to GTA a stolen jeep to the South, and ended up taking some bullets by did own side as he ran across the border. SK found him wounded using thermal cameras and dragged him to safety…and much needed medical help. Seeing the blood trail in thermal from them dragging him was heartbreaking. Poor guy was not convinced he was in SK until medical staff put a SK flag on the rooms wall he was in. Poor guy not only was shot multiple times but was full of easy to cure parasites in his intestines. It takes pure courage and a little bit of luck to get out of NK alive.
My dad, a career soldier in the US Army, once told me that one difference between the USA and USSR is that in the USSR, all of the barbed wire faces inward. No one ever tries to break into the USSR or today's Russia. Everyone crossing that border illegally is trying to get out.
The USSR used to be similar to North Korea, so I believe he is making a point about controlled states under communism. I think that’s the obvious point.

Actually there are a few, but it are indeed not many at all. Despite a significant amount of Koreas describing the south as a hellish place to live, they still don't feel like North Korea is the answer or the better place to be. Of course anti-DPRK propaganda is also being spoonfed from birth here in South Korea basically, so not many people would grow out liking it or feel some appeal for it.

There are a few thousand who might want to flee ROK for the DPRK for better living conditions. But that's more of an exception rather than the rule. There are just simply many many better alternatives such as France and people with the means to leave generally choose modern nations to go to.

You may already know this, but family is something not the same as "normal" families. There's really no love in families in NK. It's just all a necessity for survival. They just do everything that the NK government tells them to do and nothing else. They avoid "love" because they all may one day want to defect from N.K. and don't want ties that would hold them back. "Love" is a concept that's is foreign to N.K. ..... until they find freedom. But for some, even when they found freedom doesn't necessarily mean they will be happy. I've seen some stayed being miserable, despite the fact that they are no longer under the N.K. regime. Their positive emotions was basically destroyed by the N.K. regime. That may be hard to understand for some that's never been living under hardship before.

I'm not an astronomical person but I can confirm that the sky is indeed very clear in North Korea. I will never forget that night on the beach in 함경북도 or that night in 칠보산 where the sky was very clear. The starry sky lit up the country, it was beautiful.

I don’t blame them for defecting. That place isn’t worth fighting for. Those soldiers are seriously malnourished and underpaid. The women soldiers are sexually assaulted daily as well. That place is hell on earth that only the elites can enjoy while some chubby funny looking little man with a weird haircut is too power hungry to give his own people freedom. All it would take is for North Korea to unite with the south and he’d most likely retain his leadership but would be under a democracy not a dictatorship. Almost overnight there would be American and South Korean fast food shops opening up there and immediately create jobs… That guy could literally become a hero for his people and chance things practically overnight but power is too important for that family. Imagine being stuck in the 1950s while the south is in 2024.

Every defection story makes me happy, especially from a country as oppressive as North Korea. My husband was stationed in West Berlin, with the US Army, in 78' and '79. We could make day trips to the East, (I had to have a special passport, called an Ost Pass, that was checked by the East German guards every time we went through Checkpoint Charlie,) but only Soviet officers were permitted to travel to the West side of the Wall. There were a few East-to-West defections while we were there, and there was a feeling of celebration in the West every time. Freedom calls to the human heart.
In countries with free trade and democracy there is still mass poverty,hunger and daily struggles just imagine how horrible it would be in a country under sanctions, complete dictatorship and restrictions within states in the country. God forbid,what a life.
