"I can live without being a success, but I couldn't have lived without trying, and I did that" - very touching words from Brent here. So many people are so obsessed at 'making it' whether it be acting, sports or music that they forgot to enjoy the journey. He knows he won't become a big star but he doesn't care because he loves being a musician as it is an escape from his mundane day job. It made him feel alive. He didn't want people to know him as a sales rep, nor did he want his job to become his identity, he wanted that to be a rockstar and good on him. I know lots of people didn't like this movie and I can see why; inconsistent script writing, character personalities not weighing up and plot mistakes. But I will admit this ending as really nice.
I was made redundant from a rock hard slog of a job a few years ago and this film puts it all together in perspective , from all of the sh*t that is thrown at us in life we aim to try and rebuild, find our happy, and get back on our feet from where we left off, genius acting from gervais and a kind of closure to David brents story 👌👌
I didn’t like this film particularly but my favourite bit is probably when his friend nudges him after he misses the hint about going for coffee. That’s strangely touching.
2:18 is so sad. It’s unfortunately all too relatable. Colleagues who are dickheads are the worst. Work can be an awkward place to stand up to people and you need at least one person there who you can talk to.
It's a very awkward place to stand up to anyone: if you are being bullied then that's fine you're the victim in peoples' minds, but as soon as you stand up for yourself, that is being disruptive to others. That's how it is in real life. Brent isn't an aggressive guy though and Jeremy is nasty. It's great how Pauline stands up for him.
2:25 good point by Brent. Ok Brent isn’t a perfect person, but the people who pick on him in that shithole aren’t anything exceptional themselves. Brent was trying to do something constructive with his life unlike that no-talent rep that’ll never amount to anything instead of just sitting at a desk with a phone in his hand. At least Brent had a good attitude.
Exactly. Brent is a dreamer and tried, who could blame someone for that? The arseholes in that place are no better than him. Love Karen and Pauline for sticking with him!
Brent is a narcissistic twat. He's doing nothing constructive with his musical endeavors. There's so many like him in the music biz. If you sympathise with him you're the kind of person that really values a participation trophy.

@@stevee6305 it was really boring. @@yeetbagmcgee9376 Yes he did have that character development during The Office. But since then he has gone down in life: At Lavichem he is not the boss now, merely an employee out on the call centre floor. His ego/confidence has taken a big dent and that's being reflected in how he's so easily kicked off the tour bus ('Not much room on there!') and how he has to beg his band mates to have a drink with him. This is Brent down on his luck and trying to build his confidence back up again, so it rings true/make sense to me.
This was nice, I just felt the film as a whole was unnecessary. The last episode of the office was a proper ending. In that final Xmas episode David stood up to the "friends" he was always trying to impress, and he actually clicked with his date that turned up to the party. It ended in a way where we knew he was still David Brent but that he was going to be Ok. Then this film was announced and suddenly we see David acting as if that final episode never happened. It was good, I just feel it was obviously not needed. Some things are crying out to be revisited. This wasn't one of them, the series ended masterfully.
I quite liked the observation that Ricky Gervais made about how reality TV had evolved so much over the past 20 years since he made The Office. From the fly-on-the-wall Docu-soaps of the late 90s to stuff like TOWIE and Britain’s Got Talent etc, the idea that Brent would see the likes of Jedward or Wagner on the X Factor finding fame and fortune and think that could be him is quite an interesting take. Unfortunately the actual film doesn’t really play up that angle much.
I agree with you the xmas episode was perfect ending. Because all in real life went on to greater things hobbit pirate movies etc. It's a bit like only fools and horses i always watch upto when they get there millions
@@shelbyvillerules9962 Interesting. It might have been an interesting alt. plot to have him audition for a fictional version of The X Factor and then have him get to live shows as a wildcard/novelty act, and fail, and keep all the stuff that happens in the Lavichem office just as it is. His co-workers gathering round the telly in the local pub to watch his performances each week. However, I'm sure that Ricky must have considered doing the film that way (there is that reference Jeremy makes at the end to Simon Cowell). So I'll trust Golden Globe-winning Ricky on this one that he made the right story choices for this film.
0:12 It's insane how fast the atmosphere and the feeling switches from completely hilarious and absurd to actually relevant and kinda deep and true regarding these issue in life.
Really enjoyed this film. And loved the fact that most of the people around Brent were nice people, who wanted him not to try so hard and relax and be happy. The rapper, the musician and his workmate. Concentrate on those who love and care for you. They're the ones that only matter. Fuck the haters in life. They're meaningless.
Didn’t think I’d be bawling my eyes out at this... touching ending for a classic character... Glad Jezza got what he deserved (maybe he deserved more) and Brent maybe found a long lasting partner... 😊
But therein lies the likelihood of the other David Brent coming to the fore. Someone's attracted to him, but he wants someone who bolsters his self image of being successful and desirable, so he's just as likely to rudely spurn her, because she's not pretty.
This always reminds me of John Candy's character in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. He finally lets the mask slip and reveals the kind and lonely man hiding inside.
This is at least better than the ending him and the band have together where they treat him like dirt all film and then inexplicably decide that they actually like him.
I hated the fact they were so rude to Brent. It shows how less and less kind humans have become but I think they overdone it. Found myself just feeling sorry for Brent instead of laughing at him. The Office characters would lighten up if Brent actually spoke about something and then close up again after he goes too far. These people wouldn't even let him ride on the bus that HE BOUGHT. Even if I'm the most annoying person on Earth, I'm riding on my damn bus.
Nice little “clean up” ending so we know our favorite awkward character David Brent found his happiness ... thank you Ricky! And great ending song as well! David Brent - After coffee - GET IT MATE! She’s into you 😉 and you ARE a rock star
Through the series, you only really see the tragic shell of David Brent. It's genuinely touching to see his soul emerge, when you start to see he is using laughter to stop himself from choking up. I love that they did the character justice by showing his emotionally vulnerable, human side. You can also see that dynamic in the US version of the office where Jim has this effortless rapport with children, but he doesn't have the clarity of introspection to see what people find valuable in him versus what his egoic aspirations are

I always think the ending is particularly poignant because of all the things he said about relationships and women the TV series, and I wonder why the woman at the end of the 2nd special didn’t work out for him.
Very lazy ending - same as 'Office' Christmas special - Brent finally finds a woman who understands him, or who is willing to overlook his many obvious flaws, or just feels sorry for him. Come to think of it the whole film is more or less a warmed up rehash of 'The Office'. And yet, and yet... I watched it right through and I'd probably watch it again - there's something about Ricky Gervais and his loser schtick that we all can relate to.
I really liked this movie except the ending was a bit crap and poorly written. The whole movie goes on about how everyone doesn't like David and they think he's a knob, but in the last 10 mins or so, every character who's spent the whole rest of the movie hating him all say that he's not too bad and that they like him. It's almost as if there's a chunk cut out where they gradually start to see the good in him.
Huge huge Office fan, but this film was crap. The Office itself is a huge character and without it, all the charm and humour of Brent's chracter disappears with it. Also, a film over a TV Mockumentry firmat just did not work at all.

It was just a film we could have done ithout
Very lazy ending - same as 'Office' Christmas special - Brent finally finds a woman who understands him, or who is willing to overlook his many obvious flaws, or just feels sorry for him. Come to think of it the whole film is more or less a warmed up rehash of 'The Office'. And yet, and yet... I watched it right through and I'd probably watch it again - there's something about Ricky Gervais and his loser schtick that we all can relate to.
There’s always something quite off putting in a person whose top front teeth slope backwards.
Other back characters ain’t as good as office ones
Started the film. Turned it off after 20 mins.
Thanks for the info!
@@jimmorrison2657 Very useful indeed.
Thats some top info, well done
Were you trying to save up on electricity?
Then what happened? Cuppa tea and a wank?
The movie sucked, but this was a wonderful ending for the character.
My God this is terrible. That awful laugh thing he over uses. You can see Merchant wasn't involved in this. Awful.
One of the worst films I've ever seen
CRINGE. SO BAD
