This song always makes me cry. I am a kiwi living in uk. My mum died nearly 2 years ago and we played this at the end of her funeral. So beautiful.

I thought about my mum who has passed when I heard this on the radio earlier. Not kiwis so no connection to the language or culture but I think just feel of the song draws out your emotions

You know what really blows me away? It's the fact that not only is this one of the most beautiful vocal performances I have ever heard, but she recorded it when she was only 16 years old! Talk about being ahead of the curve.

As a child from a troubled background, I found great joy from being in my school choir. As a boy soprano, I soon found myself singing this song in front of three older ladies in 1973 and later, I stood up and solo'd at one of the major concerts for the Opening of the Sydney Opera House as part of the Combined Schools Choir, singing this song. I had no idea at the time. Thanks to you for putting this up and helping me claim one of the more important parts of my life that was lost.
This girl is pure class. Saw her in Reading England at the end of the concert she came back to stage door on a freezing cold night and had a chat with the people that waited to see her. What al ovely girl.

In Ireland, a song to our lady in Gaelic has been set to this tune. This is fitting as the Emerald Isle is in my opinion the only country I've visited that comes anywhere near the land of the long white cloud for sheer scenic beauty.
Our Maori soldiers love singing and yes it is a Maori song.

Believe it or not, I saw Hayley in Northands Mall a few days back. She was having a Coffee from Muffin Break with her mum. A girl, about 5 or 6, came up and wanted to know what Hayley had been doing, so they invited her to sit and chatted with her. What a wonderful country we have, and perfectly represented by this gifted young lady.
In 1965, in a high school auditorium in Hawaii I first heard this song and have been searching for it ever since. I stumbled unto it by chance. I didn't know the name of it but I remember the haunting beauty of it. Thanks Ms. Westenra for this rendition.
This song would always play in a game called Endless Ocean on the Wii, exploring beautiful tropical waters when the guitar hit was just so beautiful. Coming back to this song to practice singing, I'm overjoyed.
There's something about this song when you listen to it when in new zealand. As an immigrant here, this song gives me so much hope and love for this beautiful country that has given me alot. I love this country and the Maori people ❤️
Hi just read your comment and my dad was in the merchant navy and jumped ship in the late 50s in New Zealand, met my Mum and married and had us kids there. He never regretted it for one second.

i went on a trip a few years ago and spent a month in a house looking out on the ocean. i used to walk on the beach and listen to this song. its so beautiful and brings back such good memories
While i was an exchange student we used to sing this song in school assembly. It was so overwhelming to sit in a room with 2.5 thousand students and just sing. It really moved my heart.
These days I sing that song to my kids at night time and hope to go back to NZ soon.
When I was 5 we had a teacher from NZ, she taught us this song. I was told this was my father's fav piece of music. I was not there at his passing. We had a difficult relationship. I forgave him and myself for this. This beautiful music has deep meaning to me. Beautifully sung too.

As a Kiwi, this song always sends a chill down my spine. Beautiful version of this song. Being a Kiwi living far away from God's Own since almost 23 years now, this brings me fond memories of my home land. My Kiwi father tought this song to my Swiss Grand-Mother, when he was living in Geneva back in the 1950's. She loved this song, knew it by heart. She passed away last year, this song was part of her funeral.
