I'm a flow artist. It's not super popular, but it's the act of manipulating an object in a fluid manner. My preferred props are poi, which are weighted objects on the ends of chords. You can apply martial theory, dance basics, and even some fancy math and physics principles to get better.
Gardening. I have a hoe, cages for my tomatoes, and a shovel. That's about all I need to grow vegetables. To build flower beds I need more. But most of them are created using rocks.
@@ItzaMeEmilyMarieI have goldfish. I have filters that need changed every few months, but they're not a hobby. They eat mosquito larvae, so we benefit from them greatly.
My husband and I were Art majors in college, and we both have careers that include art, but we truly feel more creative when we own less materials. We have seen many artists fall into the trap of hoarding art supplies.
YES. I also went to school for art and I ended up switching to digital art!!!! I have NOT looked back. I also found myself struggling to be creative when I had all the possible materials, and it gave me anxiety to use them if it was very expensive. Seeing art related hoarding triggers me but in a good way. It is a true thing that happens to artists!
I feel the same Debbie! When we own fewer art materials, we actually know what we own, and consequently, we will use them more and in more creative ways.
I'm listening to this while knitting a cleaning cloth! Knitting is a form of meditation, especially if it's a basic pattern you don't need to concentrate on.
TK's wise advice of "making sure it is your checklist...or your dream" is more important than most people realize! It has taken me 60 years to realize I was always being 'persuaded' to do what others wanted, while thinking it was what I wanted...so sad.
Reading and Knitting are my favorite hobbies. I mostly buy used books or get them from the library. My knitting hobby, I do not keep a large inventory of yarn at home, I buy yarn for a specific project.
Fantastic content! I will likely listen again to catch all the great points you all made. Loved listener Grace's tip at the end. On 2 separate trips to Indonesia and Botswana, I brought several clothing items I knew I would happily part with. On the safari, I asked the camp host if I could leave some clothes and a compact shopping bag in my room for the cleaning personnel to take. I didn't want to offend anyone. Anyway, he said that would be great as the staff share stuff left behind with their local village nearest to the camp. Was a feel good moment for me and I made sure I didn't do something inappropriate. Plus I had lots more room for my souvenirs which I made sure were made by locals and supported the immediate community versus crap made in China.
I am always wondering what people who live in tiny homes do for hobbies because they have no room for supplies! Lol As far as camping supplies, I figure I can use most of my supplies at home if I am in a power outage to cook, charge my phone, keep warm etc.
I have a shoebox of crochet stuff, a shoebox of paper crafting stuff, and a shoebox of jewelry making stuff. I've set tight limits because friends have rooms full of things they seldom use, but won't part with. All my hobby stuff fits on a shelf. BTW, the colors and styles of yarn, beads, and papers change over time. Tina, Al's wife
I needed something to do in my downtime, never crochet in my live, but it looked fun, bought one ball of 🧶 and one hook, happy times watching tutorials and unravel the yarn after I tried something. 😊 if I feel skilled enough and still enjoy it, I hope one day I can make a blanket, but if I go bored, I only bought one hook and one 🧶
I'm currently in survival mode, doing a PhD. I still have hobbies and passions, but because of how intense grad school is, I am forced to put it all on the backburner unless they can directly help me through this intense period of my life. Participating in those interests has become a reward for me whenever I do something good in my program, which just makes those extra hobbies even more enjoyable. But for the most part, I'm all in on academics for the next 3 to 4 years.
I'm doing a lab based research master's degree and I related to your comment a lot, of course my course being an intense 1 year course is a bit different to your intense 3-4 years. I love having many hobbies and I've had to stop doing a lot of them for now. As you said due to the 'survival mode' and just lacking time and energy, I am really looking forward to going back to them next year. But I agree with spending time mindfully doing a hobby feels very special and feels like a reward after a long lab day! Good luck for the rest of your PhD! 💪🏻 having balance between academics and hobbies/life is so important

Hya you lovely lot! From Newcastle upon Tyne uk 🇬🇧 I’m a terrible one for thinking oh I would love to learn that oops 🙊 so I buy loads of resin , equipment, blah blah then …. Yep leave it in a box because it is not the right time .
I have a lot of things I like to do that I don't consider hobbies. We go camping with what we consider basics...a tent, blow up mattress, flashlights, bedding, blankets, coolers, etc. Most of those items are also used in our house. We do more cabin camping because so many campers don't abide by the quiet hour rules...they drink and party in state parks, which disturbs all of the campers. It requires less equipment and can be done in the colder months. Summertime it's almost impossible to get an affordable pet friendly cabin anymore. Winter renting one is cheaper than renting a hotel room. I have goldfish, but they're not a hobby, they're pets. I feed them mosquito larvae which keeps us healthier. I use their water to feed my plants which is great for all. The fish need their water changed and the plants get thirsty. I garden which requires minutes of my day, a hoe, tomato cages, and a shovel. I'm expanding our property into a giant garden. My husband put in a brick walkway. He put the dirt into piles. I'm using that dirt to smooth out our front yard and the stones to create pathways. You don't need a lot of extra stuff, you just need to be creative.
As a baker and a highly creative individual - I dwell on collecting ceramics / and different moulds for different pastries - you see as someone who likes to experiment on her own as a self taught baker - this checklist becomes accumulated the more I wish to expand my creativity - especially when I am so deeply inspired by bakers on Pinterest / I agree on the accessories getting in the way but sometimes we need these accessories to enhance the creativity - I find it such an obstacle to take away the accessories in baking - till today I am still trying to declutter my baking accessories - are there any minimalists bakers here? However I've a small size kitchen therefore all my accessories are chuck into cupboard and even though it was being kept in containers - ants tend to find their way in my sugar/flour that is really difficult for storage - that these days I dont get ingredients immediately. I love baking but I think the joy gets taken away through the washing up / and the aesthetic photography for the end product even though I don't tie my self worth for the end product. Most of the time my hobbies becomes my side hustles - however I am an experimentalist therefore I collect everything that I wish to try out so before baking I tried out watercolour art - and I was collecting brushes/ paint / that I lost my interest in it because the investment was burning a hole in the pocket. " try to be minimalist in the earlier on in the hobby / and get to know yourself in relation to the hobby so that you won't be overcommitted" well if only I knew this earlier - thanks tk.
How do I get rid of the negative thoughts about my husband's company not paying him several times throughout the year (missing paychecks), and he does nothing about it. I have anxiety, reflux, high blood pressure, trying to deal with our finances and have "robbed Peter to pay Paul" so many times throughout the years. I am constantly in fight or flight mode. We have 3 kids and they have sabotaged our work to become debt free. How can we, when he won't leave and get another job, and they owe us $20,000.
last year was the first time in life I was finally able to "delete all IPs" from my home. this means I do not have (or try not to have) any intellectual property at home which mostly means entertainment of all kinds or any type of commercial branding in any sort of way. I cut all my hobbies down and out to now focusing on living peacefully and thankfully. life has gotten a lot lot easier...

Fishkeeping. I used to have so much stuff for my betta tanks
Doing Barre and Baking - both burns a hole in the pocket nonetheless - one thrives on activewear and equipment and one thrives on moulds.
