I grew up in Epworth and the Old Rectory has always been a fascination of mine especially with old jeffery, everytime i walk past i get the shivers and i swear i have seen the curtains to the left side of the house moving before.

A beautiful house and fascinating tale. The dog, the levitating bed and the shoving sound paranormal and difficult if not impossible, for some kind of trickery. Now it is a museum I wonder if anybody has had any ghostly experiences there. Great video, thanks for your work, so enjoyable.

Great story! I've heard of the Epworth Rectory Poltergeist, but learned new things from you about it. And I love listening to your stories as I go to sleep.
As to why or what it was, I'm wondering if it was the energy from the entire village's hate aimed at them, made worse by the family's multiple tragedies of children dying and father going to the poor house. Not to mention the father being a royal jerk to his wife. If he stayed away from his pregnant wife for a year for something so minor, I bet he was rather difficult to live with daily, and that type of tension would put everyone constantly on edge.
Since poltergeists are theorized to be the result of heightened emotional energy of some type, from people living in the affected house or nearby, that would track. Or maybe it was an aggregor, a being caused by multiple people's beliefs in it. Someone "plants a seed" of belief (in this case, of a demon), others hear it and start believing in it, thinking about it often, "growing" it 'til it becomes strong enough with enough energy to affect things physically.
Whatever it was, it's an interesting story. I feel for the family, especially the women who were blamed. Thanks for bringing us the story.

    What a gorgeous building.
It’s difficult to comprehend how Hetti could manufacture the levitating of a bed, or physically push someone. As for the theory of ropes, pulley’s and weights. It’s a bit of a non starter for several reasons.
There is no doubt in my mind this was supernatural, plain and simple.
Superbly constructed video Nicola, beautiful narration; well done young lady, well done.
    You take care.

I currently ministering in my mother's parish. When she was 13 years old she and her two brothers encountered a poltergeist in a old house, which is now ruined. Mum always says that she saw the ink pot move across the window sill, as well as the poker shaking in the coal bucket. A scotch man lived there for a short time, but everyone didn't trust him. Rumour has it he was a medium, the parish priest gave him money to go away. This was in 1959.

The strings-and-pulleys theory is just ridiculous. With as many people as resided in the house, It would be impossible for no one to have stumbled upon the hoax. I believe the tensions and unsettled emotions in the house may have attracted and fed whatever entity was responsible. Great video. Thanks!

Wow, What a fantastic video, brilliant, really enjoyed this one, an amazing case. I was watching something on the Great British Ghosts series from the 1990's you might find interesting, there is a hotel in Ludlow, Shropshire, that is called the Feathers Hotel and has numerous ghosts, worth watching, but there is one outside the hotel where a girl in 1960's clothing, mini skirt and high boots, is seen to cross the road and pass through cars there, but the thing is that a woman in a different part of Britian says the spectre is her, she isstill alive of course, probally the stone tape theory!! I thought it was a great case too, keep up the great work Nicola, Val in Ireland.

Thank you for another interesting, well-researched, photographed, edited, and narrated video! It seems if it was a sophisticated system of pulleys, etc., that someone eventually would have stumbled upon one of the mechanisms as it would have to have been extensive to encompass the house and elaborate. Also, it's interesting that when someone scoffed at another for being frightened or disbelieved the story, then that person was targeted. Thank you! As always, your videos - short or long - make my day brighter!! Take care.

Interesting. All of it, not just the poltergeist. They're supposed to be attracted to, or manifested by adolescent energies, aren't they? I wonder if the youngsters there did have an effect - not consciously, of course. I love the way people kept saying - oh you're easily frightened. It won't scare me.......famous last words. Great episode. Thank you.

Poltergeist actively is often recorded around young people in their teens. I wonder if this was such a case given that there were several teens in the house.
This sounds like a genuine poltergeist case, and the fact that another rector experienced similar disturbances some time later would suggest it had nothing to do with the Wesley family and more to do with something attached to the house.

I've never seen a ghost in my life but all I can say it was a hot day outside and we went upstairs and one of the rooms was freezing cold. This was the only place I've been that was supposed to be haunted that I thought was haunted. I didn't like that room at all. This is interesting, because there's a two pronged issue here.
It's long known that religious buildings, (current, ruined and the land where they once stood) seem to contain energies that long persist.
The second prong is the curious catalogue of cases of methodist sites that were and are haunted by perceived malevolent but definitely violent activity, a lot of investigators assaulted and hurt testify to this, this seems peculiar to these places from what I have read.
    Curious indeed.

What a lovely house and I do believe that something paranormal has happened. I lived in a very old haunted mansion house and not just me but friends and family witnessed things happening, spring loaded doors open fully, footsteps coming up the creaking stairs, taps turn on fully and in the kitchen was a instant boiling water machine as well as the standard hot and cold water taps and my girlfriend saw all 3taps turn on as we walked through the kitchen. Voices were commonly heard and lights would turn on/off. We all witnessed things, also the dog would growl an his fur would stand up and he would follow something around the room we were in. This happened in many rooms. I never saw a ghost but family members did. These things were not regular but sometimes they happened once or twice a week but then nothing for along time. Thanks for another great show 🎉.

Thank you for another extremely interesting and informative video. I always enjoy and appreciate the amount of detail you include in your accounts. I've often read that Hetty was to 'blame' for the alleged haunting but believe that if she was it was on a purely unconscious level. The fact that educated people allegedly witnessed phenomena would seem to point to the case being one linked to a genuine poltergeist. In line with many other poltergeist infestations Hetty would have been about the right age to be the focal point, especially as family tensions at the time (often linked with RSPKE phenomena) would be a significant attribute to the haunting. I am however surprised that any religious defense mounted by the Wesley's wasn't met with a more violent pushback mounted by the poltergeist as seen in many other cases, including the Bournemouth poltergeist. Each case is different though I suppose and whilst there will often be subtle differences between phenomena in poltergeist outbreaks, there will always be a greater degree of commonality it seems; almost as if poltergeists HAVE TO abide by a certain set of 'rules' in terms of how they manifest themselves. Very much looking forward to your next video and thank you once again.

Thank you so much for your kind comment and your thoughts on the Epworth poltergeist. It’s interesting, I think, that the poltergeist came back many years later could suggest Hetty was not the culprit. It really is a bizarre case! I’m glad you enjoyed it for sure 👻🙏🙋‍♀️

      @stuartd9741 9 місяців тому

      100% this.
      My thoughts exactly.
Interesting point about any attempts to remove the entity usually results in more perhaps angrier poltergeist behaviour.
      ..
I too suspect Hetti may have
      (subconsciously )
been a conduit creating a "pathway" into our realm.
(Same applies to the Bromley poltergiest)
      ..
Futher up into the beginning of the comments.
someone visited Epworth in the 80s and felt the attic was very cold, suggesting that what spirit was conjured is perhaps still. there...?
Definitely a creepy & weird story.

Hetty comes in for some seriously misogynistic hate in those accounts, imo. "just the kind of girl" what is that supposed to mean? The whole family was terrorized and, in a not so big house, where were all these strings and pulleys supposed to be?? Both Hetty and Old Jeffrey deserve more credit!

This case bears a lot of similarities to the Bell Witch haunting in Kentucky, from a not-too-dissimilar time period. Y'might even call this "England's Bell Witch".

Since Epworth happened in 1716/1717 and Bell happened over a hundred years later in 1817-1821, I'd say the Bell Witch Haunting should be "The US's Epworth Poltergeist."

There must have been a lot of repressed anger due to Samuel Wesley's oppressive and domineering presence. Hettie sounds like the type of young woman who does attract poltergeist activity. Often sensitive and intelligent young women experience a lot of turmoil. Anything demonic can only feed off fear and anger.

I've heard a theory on poltergeists that the puzzling events could be the result of escaped excess human energy from a living person, maybe under great stress of some kind. It seems like Hetty had a connection to it. I'd be curious to read some of her writings, especially the poetry. Her story was kind of sad, having been sent away by her domineering parents because of her love interest. She put herself through a lot for love. Frankly, I think her father was disliked by the community because he had miserable energy for a man of God. Thank you again for your hard work and talents. I really get inspired by these stories.

Skeptics thought Hetty produced the haunting because she didn't write it down? Unbelievable! Since all of the family had experiences, I doubt we could suspect just her. I, especially, wouldn't take the doubts of an Edwardian man who probably thought it was all due to hysterical women. The situation with the village sounds tense. I wonder what was really driving it.

It is great that you put in the History of the Area and also the people involved.
But to blame Hetty as the perpetrator of any of the events is just unfair, I am unsure as to why she was seen that way but unfair it was. As for the apparatus that would have been required to create the knocking and banging, would have been difficult, at the least, to put into place and nobody noticed? But rebelling against her Father I really don't know but what was her motivation?
But I am going to stick with Old Jeffery. As it's easier to believe in his involvement rather than Earthly based Hetty being a Rebellious 19year old, Enemies of the Father of the Household.
Anyway Thanks Again for a Masterful Episode. All of you have a great weekend, see you soon. TTFN.

Yes, I tend to lean toward being more inclined than not to accept that there is something beyond the veil.
One of the two instances I mentioned occurred whilst I was browsing a preview day of antiques and collectibles at an auction house in London.
I was in conversation with a member of staff when handling an item I had requested to examine more closely.
It was then that I felt this sensation of being brushed past. I immediately looked behind me. There was none near me.
I told the member of staff. She said, it happens all the time!
It really comes as little suprise as items of personal sentimental value of people who have quite recently passed on are sold.

Wow, thanks. Everything I've ever read about poltergeists says that they derive power by accessing untapped sexual energy from children, teens and young adults. Perhaps Hetty was particularly frustrated and gave off such energy. If she was as unpleasant as suggested by an acquaintance, she may have just decided not to play along with the family decision to "witness" such things. Or perhaps it was an actual ghost, and she had an understanding with Old Geoffrey!
