  • Fallout is a perfect video game adaptation. In this video essay, I discuss why Jonathan Nolan's Fallout series on Prime is one of the best video game adaptations on TV.
    Fallout is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, and executive produced by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner for Amazon Prime Video. It is based on the role-playing video game franchise created by Interplay Entertainment and now owned by Bethesda Softworks. The show follows Lucy, a resident of Vault 33, who leaves behind the only life she has ever known to explore an irradiated Los Angeles in an effort to rescue her father, Hank.

    I had a blast watching Jonathan Nolan's Fallout adaptation on Prime. In this video, I discuss why I think it's a perfect video game adaptation, up there with 2023's The Last Of Us series. What did you think of Fallout season 1?

      Nolan's last show wasn't westworld, it was the peripheral which apparently nobody watched

    Damn this comment section is expecting Christ himself to show up or thing. I feel this is probably the best game to media adaptation we have had which is a great sign hopefully there is more shows like this. I feel like giving this a 8 or 9 out of 10 isn't too far of course there is something you can nitpick for sure but overall great show.

      It gives me hope for the God of War adaptation. If they get that one right, it could be one of the all-time greatest series of any kind.
      I also wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda greenlit a Bio-Shock series after this.

      @@carpeimodiem That would be awesome! i just learned they are making a 40k Warhammer adaptation. I'm not a BIG fan of Warhammer but seeing how good this show was i'm excited to watch that show

      @@99hrs I mean that's the thing... A Warhammer story could be anything. But God of War is only one thing... Kratos and his son. The once and future Loki.
      I mean, if you have the budget... That is THE single greatest storyline ever created in a game. I've shown the edited game movie version to so many people who never played videogames in their life. And they absolutely love it. The Last of Us is great. And a no brainier for anyone like HBO to adapt like they did. But God of War needs every dollar possible for visuals and talent. And all it needs to do is follow the EXACT storyline, with very little alteration. Even better than that, they can toggle between flashbacks to his old life in Greece. So viewers can learn who he is. While they learn what he's doing now.
      Think about it... Let's say you know nothing about the series. And it starts like the game. Kratos chopping down wood for his wife's funeral pyre. And he remembers training as a Spartan soldier. Becoming the champion of Sparta. And upon a looming defeat, selling his soul to Ares to become his sworn weapon.
      Then his son snaps him out of it. And we learn his wife just passed. And he takes his son hunting after the fire. More flashbacks. Being the ghost of Sparta. Eventually being tricked to kill his own family. He tells his son he isn't ready for the journey yet. And needs to train more. Playing the hitting hands game. Establishing his illness.
      Then Baldur (as the unknown stranger) knocks on the door. And Kratos hides Atreus and answers. "Hmmm... I though you'd be bigger. Long way from home, aren't you??" "What do you want?" "Oh, you already know the answer to that..."
      Another flashback of Kratos getting his revenge on Ares. Then back to Baldur. Escalating the situation. The flashback tricking the audience into thinking his backstory has anything to do with why Baldur. Then the showdown. The most insane fight ever filmed. Finally Kratos seems to beat Baldur, the mysterious stranger. It's already remarkable because we saw Kratos defeat giants and Greek gods with much less effort. And Baldur can't feel anything.
      Kratos is confused. But he heals and his son is safe. They begin their journey. And we realize that Kratos is Greek. But their in the the Norse lands now. And boom... That's your pilot. And the whole season is like that.
      Backstory. Forward progression. Such an odyssey! Two seasons for the first game. Two for the second. He saves his son in the first season. And defeats Baldur in the second. And there's no side quests. Or downtime. Everything is broken up with more backstory. So many stories from his Greek adventures to keep everything fast paced. After 5 or 6 years, we'll get another game. And they can do two more seasons. I can't wait.

    I think the underrated fourth main character in Norm as he unravels the mystery of 31 was one of my favorite parts of this show, wish it had a bit more of an "ending"
    Spoiler:
    The 31 overseer's captions are labeled as "Brain-on-a-Roomba"

    Vault 4 is the equivalent of a side quest. It was somewhat interesting but unnecessary to the main story and felt like filler when Lucy and Maximus finally leave.

    • @carpeimodiem
      @carpeimodiem Місяць тому

      It was the mystery of Vault 4, to set up the big reveal of each corporation using their own vaults to run experiments. Which supports their own bottom line. The reason to invest heavily in Vault Tec. And to support their big idea to drop the bombs themselves.

    • @Digger318
      @Digger318 Місяць тому +4

      but it still serves a purpose, showing Lucy how vaults can be so different to what she knew.

    • @LuisSierra42
      @LuisSierra42 Місяць тому +2

      @@Digger318 Also Vault 4 captures the religious aspect of living in the wasteland. The first fallout games had tons of tribes and cults so it was a good addition. In fallout 4, you can find several vaults and explore how they've managed to survive so even if it doesn't directly affect the plot, it's a great world building tool. Additionally, because of this storyline, Maximus started to think about others when he decided to return the Fusion Core given Lucy's advice so it also helped in character progression

    This feels weird to say. But it honestly set the precedent too high for its own good, in some regards to the writing. REALLY depending on plot twist after plot twist, to drive the pace. And that's almost completely spent now. Maybe one more season they could keep that up.
    It was like a "No, Luke... I am your father" moment, at least twice an episode. And I worry about that pace eventually jumping the shark.
    Why I worry at all is because the show tends to rely on that and its world-reveals to keep the interest and excitement up. Where the action itself is almost EXCLUSIVELY comedic. Done in slow motion. With some old timey jingle playing in the background.
    And its treated like slapstick. Like the most gruesome moments are always silly on purpose.
    And all of it works! Don't get me wrong... But if they run out of solid, believable, story-driving plot twists... what's left is a slapstick comedy. With some minor political squabbling and family drama. Which sort of reminds me of the first season of American Gods. Once they ran out of twists in season one, it became a silly exercise in dark humor.
    I'm sure it could be left as a perfect two season series. But personally, I'd love to see what they could do with a slow but serious shift in tone over several seasons.
    Who said it before she did? "War never changes." That was a great spot for that callback. I'll definitely watch the season again.

    I did enjoy it, and I'm definitely looking forward to later installments, but there were some pacing problems that keep it from being truly great unfortunately. As an adaptation it's marvelous, staying true to the look and feel of the games and throwing in some knowing asides for the gamers - things like the line "Thou shalt get by bullshit every time", which definitely rings true! Unfortunately, the middle episodes often feel like filler, while the final battle isn't really set up very well. A lot of critical plot developments are driven by coincidence rather than logical consequence. I noticed this particularly with the behaviour of Dogmeat, who seemed to choose who to follow based on plot necessity rather than plausible characterisation. So yeah - enjoyable, but flawed.

    I agree it was excellent, a fun side story and the perfect synovial fluid for the entire game universe, but it was far from perfect. I'm happy it drew my wife into the story and kept the charming idiosyncratic humor, but it could have done better explaining the universe. It was supremely good at setting up future seasons and helping re-ignite interest in the games, but it fell a little short on delivering the dread mysteries and sinister nature of the Vaults.

    it was pretty good…
    not great, definitely could’ve been better, and probably relied less on viewers bringing in pre-existing knowledge of the game… but the look and tone were pretty appropriate, and it’s definitely better than similar recent shows, like _Halo_ and _Rings of Power._
    I wish it had been more episodic, with a new kooky story-of-the-week, rather than having a convoluted long-form arc, with the overall arc being peppered in little bits.
    and the cast was mostly perfect… but Maximus was an absolute charisma void 😑
