Had a great time watching Wes Ball's Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. Thought it was a solid start to a new trilogy and was a film that sets up some interesting directions for the franchise to take beyond it. But what were your thoughts on the film? Let me know down below.
One of the most beautiful movies to grace the big screen in a long time. Loved the characters, the story, and the world. I've rarely if ever had an IMAX experience be so utterly immersive and transporting. Magic and mythical.
"Planet of the Apes" movies feel so different every time, they're hugely based blockbusters pushing the limits in arguments told and special effects involved. "Kingdom" isn't different: I loved the new characters and their arcs, the immaculate VFX and the Wes Ball directing was even more poweful than I could expect, an artist surely deserving a follow for his next projects (like the Zelda movie).
Agree. I'm 100% on board for the Zelda movie I feel like it's now guaranteed to be a success and liked by the fickle fandom that is geek culture. I'm sure Nintendo will set borders around how the story can be told, just like how Miyamoto had a say so in how the Mario movie was made. Between Nintendo that loves their brand more than any other compaby EVER and having this amazing director who understands world buyilding, proper use of CGI and motion capture, and making compelling characters that we can connect with and root for. Looking forward to Wes Ball's Zelda!
Honestly, the main villain is Mae in this movie. Proximus is overall a good leader minus the fact that he got his kingdom through conquest. It was Mae who is the main bad guy tho
I kinda agree with you but it's a bit more nuanced than how you put it IMO. She's definately not the protaginist one assume's she is when you meet her when she connects with Noa and the orangutan. I think she is on her hero's journey and it will take two more movies for her to come aorund to be a true friend of the apes. We'll see! I'm definately enjoying the ride so far. Cheers! Edit: I don't think Mae brought the gun to kill Noa. I think she brought it thinking that Noa might want to try and kill her. Not sure though it's left up to our imaginations. Love ambiguous endings, always have.
How is she the "villain"? She's an antagonist to Noa, ultimately, but not the villain. Proximus is the one manipulating Caesar's name and words to create his slave based empire.
I fully agree! The movie is fantastic, and I sincerely hope that it will do well enough for starting a new trilogy. It’s absolutely beyond me why some critics were bored by the movie. It took me a while to get into the movie. But when the fashist gorilla executioner and his gang of thugs with masks showed up, I was captivated until the very end. I loved the role of the eagles btw! They reminded me a bit of the eagles from LOTR. Mae is a great human character, wbo could become even more important in follow-up movies. A final thought: did anyone notice that the construction of the narrative skilfully avoided that Noah had to kill a fellow ape? When he fought against the gigantic gorilla executioner of Proximus Cesar, Noah escaped, but the gorilla was swept away by the flooding water. Noah and his apes also didn't kill Proximus Cesar, who was kiled by the eagles, which had been summoned by Noah. Noah never violated the most important of Cesar's laws: apes don't kill apes! Mae however did kill a human being! And Noah was very shocked when he witnessed this sacrileg. Mae didn't kill an evil agressor but someone who just had a different opinion about the whole situation and who might have become dangerousi the long run.
As a proud member and supporter of the Apes films since 2011, this film in terms of quality falls in line more with Rise. Dawn and War are just masterpieces and it’s not easy to compare. This idea isn’t tackling Subjects like psychology of oppression or the us or them mentality or even the cost of vengeance. This film tackles the idea of culture and how our culture and ideas develop and change which is a good story worth telling but I feel as though it’s not being used as much as it could be.
I feel like internet/geek culture likes to shit on Hollyood a lot ans say they just don't make good movies anymore but I disagree. I watch tons of movies every year all my life and I could honestly say there are so many great movies coming out of Hollywood there always has been probably always will be. There are always passionate producers, and passionate directors, and passionate storytellers, and passionate actors. This movie is another great example of why Hollywood is so famous around the world and popular with the masses. Anyways, my 2 cents!
Since I was 13 I have seen all the ape movies in the theaters and this one is by far one of the best. Perhaps only eclipsed by the original Charlton Heston movie. Great entertainment with a twist at the end that leaves you wanting to find out more. (For those of you who are looking at this movie with microscopes and magnifying glasses, the key word here is "entertainment ")
Such a cool film, making friends with birds is very rewarding...I prefer totally wild ones, it is possible just very time consuming....If you want a friend, feed any animal.
Like you, I love the franchise. Thank you for this review! A question: When the screen said something like “several generations later”, was it as long as 300 years? A generation is about 20 years, so while watching I assumed 60-70 years had gone by since Caesar died. That would explain to me why the apes hadn’t advanced that much from Caesar’s time. I might be wrong, though. Has anyone else heard differently?
I've always loved the philosophical questions the films in this franchise have posed. The theme explorations of religion and i guess, intellectual supremacy are interesting to chew on.
I liked it had Fun not better then war of the planet of apes or dawn but it is a good reboot the planet of the apes is in good hands and that's what I wanted
As an Australian, I really enjoyed seeing the Australian flora and landscapes. However, it doesn't make a lot of sense as it seems like this film is still set in America, unless it isn't?
I feel strange about the movie. I like it and think its a good film. But at the same time as I was watching it i found it boring (and i love long dialogue films before anyone responds.). I know this is a strange phenomenon. I spoke to others who saw it and feel the same way.
I think the problem is that not enough development was given to Proximus Caesar and not enough exploration of the kindom. It has " that's it" feeling towards the end.
@@nanopug yes I agree. As weird as this sounds I think the film actually needed to be 3 hours long simply for exposition of proximus and that kingdom. It needed an extra 30 minutes of development. Then we would have cared more.
Is it? I find the script pretty weak, the stakes basically went out the window after Noa was captured (the life in Proximus' kingdom seemed pretty good?) and I really hate the ending.
I basically agree. I liked it overall and had a good time but I felt like there was a better story in there and that with some restructuring it could have come out a lot better. But the real problem for me is the ending and its implications, I think it veered off in a pretty bad direction at the end which makes me worried about the sequel(s). The humans still being so strong and advanced kind of cheapens the previous films imo, and the virus preventing them from being able to step outside without protective gear a) severely limits where the story can go next (essentially all apes (=carriers) must die from the human perspective, so co-existence is off the table), unless b) they can find a cure which would make the story about that, finding the cure, a plot we’ve already seen in basically every zombie movie, and that’s not what this should be about. It should be about the relations between apes and humans, not some virus It’s by no means unsalvagable but this is not a good setup that allows them to explore what’s unique and interesting about this setting imo.
The big thing I didn't like was the fact that the movie only took place less that 30yrs into the future. Seems like a far reach for all of the things that happened prior to the film and makes no sense how there hasn't been some sort of revolution from humans. If they have one vault with weapons and technology, I'm sure there's others. Maybe I'm being too picky, but that made me question the movie more than enjoy at points.
As a self-identified "woke spotter," I did not detect any blatantly woke concepts. They were able to achieve a strong female character who isn't anti-male.
What about how Rockas partner that was burning in the fire. He was killed by Proximus Caesar and was a dude? Seemed like they were a gay couple. Not sure if I misheard or misunderstood it but it seemed like they tried a little woke nod.
85lb Mae did choke out William H. Macy with relative ease, but he did seem rather frail. the wild humans looked generally white, while the “sapient” humans at the communications base were super diverse… and there may have been a gay orangutan 🤷🏻♂️ but you’re right, it didn’t seem very woke at all. I’m honestly surprised they didn’t make the hero ape a female for this next chapter of _Apes_ movies, so good for them 👍
It's an okay movie but not even half as good as previous trilogy. And is making okay money, far from being a smash hit, there was a time, few years ago, when big movies earned 300-500 mil worldwide in the opening weekend, so Kingdom is far from triumph, it's just okay.
I don’t think it was a “triumph” by any definition, and I think it was the worst of the new _Apes_ movies… but still, it was fine 🤷🏻♂️ sometimes it’s nice to see a popcorn movie that’s not a disappointing mess like whatever comic book movie just came out, or some heavy, transcendent experience like _Dune._

How is this series so consistently great?!
So happy it was good. Can’t wait for the next ones.
