Homemade wooden ones are far better than the store bought plastic varietys. First of all you can make them any size or shape you want. But most importantly. Wooden feather boards cut through cleanly if they make contact with a spinning blade or cutter. Plastic fingers shatter. Upon contact they become shrapnel. I have a small scar on my arm that can attest to that!
Getting in the crawl space is usually easier than getting out. I wonder how many homeowner skeletons are hiding in those tight crawl spaces… You are lucky to have young slim helpers!
Great video Neil - thanks. Came for the pond, stayed for everything else! My 3 year old son and I watch your videos almost every sunday morning. Always gives me a little extra motivation to go do a project with him.
Ha ! That must have been the project that grew his followers. We also found him when the pond went in and now are dedicated Sunday morning viewers. We just returned from 2 weeks on my brother's sailboat ⛵️ in the Caribbean and we never missed an episode. Watched from my phone out in the ocean !! Love Neil's content, so well done !!
Feather boards are used on any woodworking tool where you wish to hold a work piece against a fence. A worker installing mill-work would not use 45 deg angles on an inside corner, what they do instead is use a coping saw and cut the profile of the trim board to butt up against the adjacent piece to create the 90deg angle. If done well it creates a join that does not need caulking. So your use of the fret saw was not really a hack.
I hope you had a happy birthday Cara!! 🎉 I would love to see how you decorate the dining room!! I love watching the channel guys and Neil this was a great episode! Definitely a tear jerker 😢😅
Thank you for setting such a great example of what it looks like to love your wife just as Christ loves the church. After learning by your example your daughters will have high standards in who they marry. America needs more husbands like you Neil.🙏🏻🇺🇸
Happy Birthday Kara! We can see how special you are through Neil's smiles in the videos even when you are not mentioned. We all know he's lucky. Your family is beautiful, congratulations!
I look so forward to your videos, and the inside peek of your family. Not so much information, to protect yourself, but enough to make the viewers think they know you. Also, the love and respect for your wife and daughters. Kudos to you!
Yes sir that's a Feather Board to hold down a Board as it comes through the Jointer. And Happy Birthday Kara !! You guys did a really great job the room looks amazing !! Can't wait to see whats next !! 👍👍
Always impressed with how hard your entire family works together, whether it's raking, working on the pond, washing equipment, renovating a dining room. That is generational. That is America. Happy Birthday to your wife. Let us see the finished product when she gets it done.
My first new truck was a 1979 F-250, drove it until we started a family. Used it as the farm service truck for 20 years then handed it " down or on" to our oldest son for his first truck. Unfortunately the needle valve stuck and it caught fire, the insurance payed out 25% of the original purchase price, thanks to inflation. Lots of good memories
Love your videos man. Thank you for continuing to make them so well. Your father-in-law’s shop is beautiful. Nice handmade featherboard. Comes in handy anytime one you’re using a table saw.
The family values in this video is what every family in our country needs. It’s wonderful how your so close😇 Happy Birthday young lady. You’re beautiful inside and out🙏🏻
It's a feather board. It helps hold the piece down, so it won't kick back and hurt you. Nice video thanks. Glad to see other folks DIY. Oh yea, that's the name Dig-Drive DIY. Happy birthday.
I have a 78 F150 4X4 and it is my 3rd one. I drove one in high school in the 80’s and every time I get in it the smell takes me back to those days. I get asked if I want to sell it almost every time I go anywhere but it is never leaving! I’m rebuilding the engine right now and then I’m going to work on the rust spots. 😊
To hear Kara talk about the early years of your marriage really hit home. I believe I’m going through that same season now. My kids are 4 and 1. Me and my wife celebrated 10 years this year. Those early years when it was just us two are just a vivid memory now. We didn’t know anything but knew everything, we were broke, but we had each other. Our first house was just over 1000sqft, but it was OUR PALACE. Those parental life lessons are starting to come full circle. Life is so busy now with our careers and growing family, I fantasize about the days when life slows down again. Videos like these help to remind me life is a marathon, not a sprint. Happy Birthday Kara!
Neil I admire your feelings for your family and your beautiful wife! You have something that alot of us don't and you truly appreciate the love your family and friends have ! Watching your videos brings a lot to me! Thanks
❤Happiest of Birthday wishes Kara! Thank you for allowing us all a glimpse of your latest project but more importantly, giving us a chance to help celebrate your birthday! Neil and Kara you both continue to inspire hopes and dreams by showing what is best in the world… Working hard, teaching your children and valuing family matters more today than ever! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving in your new dining room!
Our first home had a crawl space similar to the one you were in and we did one thing I would recommend. You should buy a roll of clear plastic or a large tarp and lay it down so you won't have to crawl on the dirt. That's what we did and it worked out great for us.
I feel the same way about 79 Bronco's too. In 1979 my Dad ordered a Bronco with the Chromatic Stripes and yellow wheels. It was a fully loaded XLT. I was 16 just got my license and we joined a couple 4x4 clubs and made a lot of fond memories. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! KARA!!!!!!
I never feel that I'm claustrophobic until i see someone else in a small space and start getting an odd feeling of anxiety haha. Bravo to that crawlspace work. Another great vid. Happy Birthday to the missus!
Happiest of birthdays to your beautiful bride! I love what you two have. Her talk about listening to parents and getting gut wrenched was very touching. What probably got me even more was the girls... Getting under the house with you, despite how creepy most people find it, is very special. Just like running the equipment and all else they get involved with under your living guidance.
Goodness gracious I’m 53 and this episode just had me balling. Wife and I are on 31 years married and have two girls and two boys 28,26,23,21. And the reason for the 3 year gap in middle kids is because we built a house in that extra year. You guys have so many great memories and a great family. Thanks for sharing Neil
Happy birthday Kara ,i started watching your channel Neil when you were at Hometown acres. my dad had a 1969 f250 and then a 1979 f250.I was a 71 model.
As another commenter said, I came for the pond and have stayed for everything else. Your channel has quickly became one of my favorites. I genuinely look forward to your videos every week. Happy Birthday Kara! I hope you enjoyed your day!
That crawl space made me itch! Can't believe the vent heating system was the newest! My mum and dad had these in their house, but it was replaced with radiators about 20 years ago lol. They do work well though, the house was always lovely and warm. Loved the old home videos this week, nice touch.
Neil, your girls are real troopers for getting in the crawlspace with you! Love how the whole family contributes to get the job done. Happy Birthday, Kara!
Happy Birthday Kara. What you showed was a Feather Board to keep the work board you are running through your table saw from coming back at you. Not a good thing! You and Kara and your kids are amazing. Thanks for the great channel.
Happy birthday Kara, you are an amazing young lady blessed with a wonderful loving family. Neil, I thought I was the only guy to have a wife that becomes even more amazing with each passing year, but I see you too are equally blessed. Here's to a wonderful holiday season for the entire Koch family. P.S. Kara's dad is amazingly organized in a way I wish I could be but know I never will be. My hats off to you sir.
Happy Birthday Kara! 💐🍾🥂 The room looks great. I hope to see the finished product. BTW be happy to treat all of you to a day at Cedar Point if you ever get over this way. I really enjoy the laid back videos.
It's awesome watching a wholesome family. I am also very grateful and happy with my wonderful wife. We got married at 20 (me) and 21 (her) . I love teasing her about that. And we have worked and loved and raised 3 kids for 34 years together. We wish we'd have taken even more photos and videos of US through the years.
Happy Birthday Mrs K! (Not sure if it's Kara, Kira, Cara, etc). That's an old school featherboard too. Also, for the nails, try pulling them through the board next time. That'll eliminate the need to grind them off, and it shouldn't damage the finished surface, unless there was no filler/caulk there originally. Finally, try using some denatured alcohol for caulking. Mrs K is laying down an excellent bead, so if you do that, spray a mist of denatured alcohol, and then form the bead with your finger you'll find that it takes much less to fill in the gap, and it doesn't stick to what has the alcohol on it. So if you spray your fingertip before forming it'll come right off. Try it out sometime!
Neil thanks for this such a heart warming video. To the star of the day Happy Birthday Kara, please keep us all in the loop. Greetings from Australia the land down under. 🇦🇺
Happy birthday, Kara. Neil, such a moving story you told this week. The stories within the video are what I enjoy about your channel the most. The perspective, the lessons, the family. If we're lucky, we'll hear another one next week.
Happy Birthday Kara ! May the peace of the Lord be with you all. One of the most enjoyable venues I watch. I find my self wanting to see another one whenever I watch. Thanks Neil...
A few weeks ago it was the wood burner firebox - now it’s that creepy, super tight crawl space. We NEED the you to post a “Claustrophobia Trigger Warning!” ⚠️
You got a good woman there. Makes me wish I had been more careful to find a woman that wanted to work as a team. It wasn’t until I got married that I figured out she really had no interest in hiking, camping, or learning the value and accomplishment of working as a team to improve our house- so I had to do nearly all physical labor, demo to painting. And I’m afraid it’s taken a toll on my life’s happiness. So pick wisely gentleman, and you’ll both go a lot further than ‘we’ have. Yeah, that’s called regret.
Thanks for your work! Your video series should be submitted to the Smithsonian as the classic well balanced loving Indiana family in the 21st century. I appreciate your values and demonstrated love for your wife and daughters. We need more of this in the world.
With the amount of effort it took to just reach that lag, I would have pulled the other heater at the same time. Then if I need emergency heat, I would just plug in a space heater and never use the crawl space again. BTW, it was a feather board and is use to hold the stock flush against the fence of whatever tool you’re using to mill your stock.
N.A.S.A. study showed that 5% gap in insulation is 50% loose in efficiency I know this wasn't the goal but if anyone is going to re-insulate an old house do it from the outside. We reinsulated my parents house by removing the exterior siding and sheeting. Much easier than reinsulating from the inside! Also a multi tool works really well for cutting spray foam but I will be using your trick of a long handle scraper to break foam off also now.
I was thinking the same. They make insulated panels you can add to the outside. Just have to be careful with the vapor barrier so you don't get a humidity and mold problem.
"feather board", meant to hold stock against the fence. The used to be one of a wood-workers first projects, now you can just buy plastic ones at the box store. Happy Birthday Kara!
Great video! Thank you for sharing! And, Happy Birthday Kara! My Husband and I started watching your videos when you made the pond and we have been loyal watchers ever since! We definitely want to see how Kara redecorates the dining room! And, what a sweet, sweet video this was (we love them all by the way!) My Husband and I live in California and we hope that someday we can live in a place with more space, a larger home and my Husband would love a workshop like yours! Thank you for the inspiration and thank you for sharing - we look forward to your videos every week!
Great video. Happy Birthday to Kara. I would love to see a video of your father-in-laws shop and how he got some of those tools. I bet there are thousands of stories to be told.
It's a feather board used to hold the wood to the fence of the tool you're using. Happy Birthday Kara. Hope you guys had a good day!
It also prevents dangerous kickback on a table saw.
That is what I was going to say but you explained it better.
Yes
Great video Neil - thanks. Came for the pond, stayed for everything else! My 3 year old son and I watch your videos almost every sunday morning. Always gives me a little extra motivation to go do a project with him.
Exact same here
I also started watching with the pond and stayed. 😊

same here! except I don’t have a three-year-old son. lol but i’m here every sunday!
20:06 I love the way you crawl in, place a camera, crawl out, replace the insulation and crawl back in…all for the shot.
Neil, you are a guy that appreciates the little things in life. All those little things add up into the life that you built. And that's pretty cool.
2 things I've learned from this video. Your wife, don't age. And what a hard worker! Great work as always!
You two are a great example of what a couple should be like. Kind of had me tearing up.
Good Monday morning. Nice job on the dining room. And your wife is amazing. She’s a keeper.
That was a hand made featherboard, very impressive. We also need a shop tour from your father in law!
I hope you had a happy birthday Cara!! 🎉 I would love to see how you decorate the dining room!! I love watching the channel guys and Neil this was a great episode! Definitely a tear jerker 😢😅
You got got yourself 1 beautiful woman, inside and out......shes a keeper......brought tears to my eyes when you explained 1979.
Thank you for setting such a great example of what it looks like to love your wife just as Christ loves the church. After learning by your example your daughters will have high standards in who they marry. America needs more husbands like you Neil.🙏🏻🇺🇸

And….🎉 Happy Birthday. This video has been the best ever. The tribute to your wife and family!!! Superb.
Best video yet! I love the dining room. Enjoyed the walk back in time. I enjoy sharing your memories.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mrs. Koch 🎉
It is a feather board, use on a table for a saw or jointer to keep the work against the stop
Happy Birthday Kara! I, too, am blessed with a wife that partners with me on whatever crazy project I dream up! Thanks for sharing your experience.
You’re absolutely right! It’s a blessing to have that kind of partnership.
Happy Birthday Young lady! 🎂
Am I the only one to get claustrophobic from that crawl space? The room looks great! Love it when a plan comes together. Happy Birthday Kara!
NO! Not the only one. Got Neil's Mom too. Can you imagine seeing your child and Grandkids in that ridiculously tiny space? I had to quit watching!
Nope, it made me feel queasy lol
Called a feather board. Used to ensure you keep your digits when pushing material through a spinning blade. 👍
Always impressed with how hard your entire family works together, whether it's raking, working on the pond, washing equipment, renovating a dining room. That is generational. That is America.

Featherboard
79 is a great year... Happy Birthday!! Nice job on the tribute Neal!
That is a feather board to help keep wood tonight to fences whether it’s a table saw or router. Happy Birthday Kara
Love your channel and enjoy watching your weekly projects. Happy Birfday to Kara!
All the best to Kara from a small town close to Germany's capitol Berlin! 🎉
Your wife should do her owe channel, remodeling and decorating. She's awesome at both.
Yes. I tell her that often.
Love your videos man. Thank you for continuing to make them so well. Your father-in-law’s shop is beautiful. Nice handmade featherboard. Comes in handy anytime one you’re using a table saw.

Happy Birthday to your better half. My Grandson and I love your channel! Thank you for being wholesome and showing the world your life.
Amazing family values. Congrats on all your hard work folks, from a random stranger!
Thanks for making us all cry. I still get a lump in my throat. When I think about that day I married my wife. I would be lost without her. ❤
featherboard - used to supply consistent pressure on the workpiece

Hello from the Netherlands Koch Family .
Happy Birthday Kara 🎉🎂
thanks for the video Neil & Mrs.Koch and the Girls .
Kind regards, Hollandduck
Thanks Hollandduck!
Happiest of birthdays to your beautiful bride! I love what you two have. Her talk about listening to parents and getting gut wrenched was very touching.

Being a carpenter, I always scribed my joint when using 1/4 round. Look up cutting a scribe joint. Happy Birthday Kara.
Happy Birthday 🎉 Cara. My wife means all that to me, too, Neil! God Bless 🙌
Happy birthday Kara ,i started watching your channel Neil when you were at Hometown acres. my dad had a 1969 f250 and then a 1979 f250.I was a 71 model.
Happy Birthday! Good job with putting up with Neil and all of his dump trucks for that long.

Happy birthday, Kara.
Neil, such a moving story you told this week. The stories within the video are what I enjoy about your channel the most. The perspective, the lessons, the family.
If we're lucky, we'll hear another one next week.
Again a nice one! And congrats to your wife , you are blessed
Indeed
Like others have already stated- A Feather board for holding wood against the fence while cutting/planing/jointing.
Happy Birthday Kara!!
She is still a beauty! But, my God!😮😍
I'm young btw! No creep:p
It is what I call a feather board, it holds the material steady to the tool!🇺🇸🏠
Happy Birthday Kara!!!!🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂
