The IMPOSSIBLE RISE of OREGON STATE Football...

- Oregon State has not been known as a great program historically, but the last few seasons have slowly been building the Beavers program back up and this year they won 10 games. Today, I want to talk about the rise of Oregon State football, enjoy!
Built not bought. They're still coaching football up in Corvallis, not that trendy of thing in college football these days. With the addition of a better QB and big body WR, we'd be talking about Oregon State in the CFP right now. Next year, their signing class isn't getting any hype, but it's REALLY good from the team's perspective. Pac12 Champs next year, top 5 D and top 10 rushing offense.
As a Sooner fan, I was PRAYING the Beavs would knock off Lincoln Riley and USC. Wasn't meant to be this year, but make no mistake, Oregon State was damn good this year and they played with a ton of energy and passion. Smith should be there for as long as he wants. He's earned it.
I would have to keep it real with you Nick. Oregon, Washington, USC, and lately Utah have bought Oregon State Athletics.
You might want to study how rêvenue sharing works before you ever start a osu comment with Built not Bought.
DJ Uiagalelei is coming boys
The loss of Jack Colletto is going to seriously hurt Oregon State, he is the most underrated super talent in college football
No chance that happens. The Pac12 champ will be either USC, Utah, Oregon, or Washington next year.
I'm so proud of everything the Beavers have gone through to get to this point. I've been a fan all my life. Seeing how far they have come brings a tear of joy to my eye.
Same grew up in Oregon and finally can say to my Oregon fan friends we were better
@@MS_6IX Both Oregon and Oregon State should have beaten Washington, both coaches made some bad calls and gave those games away.
Bring me back To a year ago
During the 2018 season, Jonathan Smith's first as head couch, I kept telling everyone "This is the most fun I've ever had rooting for a team that isn't winning many games" (they won just 2 that year). Smith was left with an empty cupboard, but in that first year you could tell the team was so well coached. There's no surprise here. And it's only going to get better for Oregon State.
Every coach he has been around from Erickson to Peterson has raved about Smith as a future head coach. He reminds me of coach Troy Calhoun at Air Force (another former QB at the school he now coaches who coaches raved about as a future coach) who just keeps winning 9 games almost every season without the resources or talent of the other teams in his conference.
@@deanfirnatine7814 Troy went to the same high school I did.
I definitely was saying that as well being close in every game and losing most of them is better then winning 4 games and getting blown out in the rest of them obviously this years results are even better.
@@deanfirnatine7814 "He reminds me of coach Troy Calhoun at Air Force (another former QB at the school he now coaches who coaches raved about as a future coach) who just keeps winning 9 games almost every season without the resources or talent of the other teams in his conference." That is probably a better job than even coach Saban could do in the circumstances.
As a student from 2018-2022 it was absolutely incredible getting to see Johnathan Smith change our support of our football program. From a tradition of the student section leaving at half time to now having to wake up early and pray you get in queue in time to get a ticket, a total 180.! Excited to see what the future of our program will look like especially with the new half of the stadium being completed next season. GO BEAVS
I was a student at OSU from the same time! I loved watching the beavs play even back in the beginning. I remember telling my best friend that the beavs would be ranked by time we graduated. Although I graduated in 2022, my friend has another year. I’m so excited to see that they’re finally getting the recognition they deserved. I’ve always believed in them and it’s amazing to see everyone else believing in them too
Jonathan Smith was a SUPER underrated hire. Learned a ton from Chris Petersen @ Boise and UW
Been an Oregon State fan my whole life, my family has had season tickets since 2002. These past few years and especially this year has been some of the most fun football they've played. Reminds me of the Rodgers brothers era, that was some fun football to watch. Hopefully DJ and Chiles bring OSU to the next level and who knows maybe reach the playoffs
As a Ducks fan its amazing to see both Oregon schools ranked so high and i love that our rivalry game actually means something again!!!!
Yep it has not meant anything nationally since Erickson was there and Smith was the QB
@@deanfirnatine7814 it did determine the rose bowl in 09
@@Senormoola damn beavers fans get mad at us even when we compliment you guys guess that why we 16-4 in last 20 years and we will walk over you guys next year and this year we only loss cause we sold
@@marzfn3430 Lmao lets see man it was fun watching you guys lose this year like so funny. I started dying of laughter.
Actually did mean something, we won you lost, that's what that means
As a beaver fan and reporter, this has been a fun team to watch steadily improve since I got to campus in 2019. Really special to have covered the Vegas bowl this year and to witness that 10th win. I did cry tears of joy after the post game presser with smith smith that’s how happy I was. Honestly the sky is the limit with this program, the way that Smith has built this program and the culture he’s set here in Corvallis. Guys are selfless when it comes to the success of the team and the star of the team is the team. Players buy in and when they do good things happen such as this season and years prior with Smith. I’m excited for next season for this program and honestly just proud of this team and the season they had.
I watched Smith as a QB, he always was a winner despite his size or lack of athleticism, he fits Oregon State as a player and a coach, he learned from the best as well with Erickson and Peterson, two legendary college coaches that raved about his future as a coach. I see Oregon State's future to be similar to Boise State under Peterson, a program that wins with less talent by playing smart flawless gritty football that is not intimidated at all by the giants of college football but instead makes the giants of college football afraid of them. I see Oregon State now as a regular 8-10 wins per year with a year once every 8-10 years where they win the conference and play in a top tier bowl like the Rose Bowl or Fiesta Bowl. I am a Duck fan and alumni but as a Native Oregonian I am thrilled for Oregon State.
Loved the atmosphere in Reser stadium this year. The coaching has been phenomenal. Thank you Jonathon Smith for taking over this program.
When Smith was first hired, he was asked who he looked to for coaching advice. Peterson, Riley, and Erickson were the obvious names. He also mentioned that he spends a lot of time with Pat Casey who knows how to get the right athletes to Corvallis.
Local boy from Corvallis here. Became a fan in 4th grade with the incredible 2000 Fiesta Bowl run. OSU grad during the Mannion-Cooks years. Was really scared the Gary Anderson era would kill the whole program. So grateful to see Johnathan Smith raise the program from the ashes and create a team, a culture, and a system that loves the game and knows they can take down anybody. Thrilled to see my hometown team finally talked about with some praise and excitement nationally, drawing recruits and giving the players and students something to be proud of. Thanks for putting this video together. Very hyped for 2023!
What topic should I do next?
The collapse of the ole miss rebels in 2002
2022
The raise and fall of MIA (FL) WR Jeff Thomas
Fall of Navy Football and their new HC
The rise of Air Force Football. 9-3 is impressive idk when the last time Air Force was good.
Hype to see more pac 12 coverage and Oregon state getting some love
Right…civil war win wasn’t even on sportscenter…you know dam well if Oregon would have won it would be in the first 5 mins of SC 😒
As a recent OSU grad it’s been incredible watching Jonathan smiths rise. I remember the night the news dropped that he got the job sitting in my down room. It’s been nothing but uphill!
D.J. Uiagalelei going to Oregon State. Maybe someone will work with him. Congratulations on a Great Year. Should be in the Preseason Top 15 next year.
I go to oregon state and couple months ago I was out at a local pizza place called Woodstock’s and Jonathan smith was there as well and bought me and my friends our pizza dinner! Jonathan Smith is an incredible person! He’s so humble and truly loves Corvallis and the university he was the perfect hire. He turned around a seemingly doomed program is just a few short years.
Good for you guys. Looks like it’s gonna be a long term great hire for you guys.
Never went to college but have been a Beaver fan since 1964. Dee Andros, Giant Killers and many many years of disappointment.
So happy for them now and hope they continue upwards.
There even getting some 4 star recruits and a previous 5 star quarterback from Clemson.
Future looks bright and I will pray for them.
Just goes to show that hard work, dedication, loyalty, and old school football can still produce winning seasons!
Thanks for a great 2022 season!
Go Beaves!!
From Oregon. Been a fan since I was 7. I seen us from rock bottom to middle of the table in the early 10’s. I love what we have building here. And it helps seeing former players talk highly about the program on the twitter.
Been waiting for this one 🙌💯
LFG BEAVERS! Thank you for covering them!!
The timing of this video is perfect with the DJ transfer news circulating right after
Been an Oregon State fan for my whole life. Especially in the late 00s/early 10s when Oregon was unstoppable, wearing a Beavers jersey would get you lots of dirty looks. If I told you I wasn't a happy camper I'd be a liar. It feels so nice to finally be above the Ducks for once. GO BEAVS!
Thanks for the video. Good historical overview. Hard to believe that 6 points between USC and Washington makes us a 12-1 team 👀
The Coach is good and from all appearances is happy where he is. He is also a former Beav QB and lives and breathes orange and black. I'm a Ducks fan BTW. They're building something special there at OSU and I'm going to love to see how far it goes.
Oregon St this season exceeded expectations definitely has Rise finished 10-3🙌.
As a freshman this is awesome to see. I’ve never been a fan of football but once I got to OSU I’ve fallen in love with football and this is a great year to be a fan.
I’m a Ducks fan, so our loss to OSU was heartbreaking, but also being a Beavs fan, it kind of softened the blow.
Oregon-Oregon State PAC-12 championship hear we come!
I’m an Oregon State alum and fan. When they hired JS, I told my family and friends; give him 5 years to turn the dumpster fire Anderson left, into something great. This was year 5. Congratulations coach Smith, staff and players for creating something great in Corvallis! Thanks for the video Scott!
Jonathan Smith deserves all the credit in the world for what he's done for our program, but I cannot stress enough how amazing Trent Bray has been as DC. OSU is quietly building one of the best defenses in college football. Hell, we would've held USC to 10 points had Chance not thrown 4 picks. Definitely keep an eye on that unit going forward
Smith needed a better defensive coordinator and knew where to get one. Hope Bray stays awhile.
Yeah man the PAC 12 is gonna be the toughest conference next year. Because unlike the SEC everybody actually plays each other. PAC 13 game next will be Washington vs Oregon
First time I ever someone say this. Respek
When I was a student at Ohio State I got to see us play Oregon State in 2018 (Smith’s first year). You could tell he was starting to build something there.
Ok Lebron
As a recent OSU grad, I’m happy my school is rising to the top. Go Beavs!
As a Ducks fan. I got no ill will towards Oregon State. It's good to see some healthy competition now. And I hope they more success to come.
I love that they let Jonathan smith take his time to rebuild this program
As a Boise State fan, that first game this year was tough. But I'm also a Beaver fan. I think it's awesome the success they are having under Smith. It was a long time coming. My family in Corvallis is enjoying the success and they just love Smith. And the win over Oregon was great. Say what you will about the Beavers, they give Oregon a good game more often than not. Hoping for more 10 win seasons ahead!
And a tip of the hat from a Oregon State alum, Boise State had a fine season themselves.
Merry Christmas Scott! Great video here!!!! What can a beaver fan say other then it feels great to be competitive week in and week out. Lots of programs are complaining right now and want their team to get to 10 wins. We understand. But, there is no shortcut. Hard work. Grit. Determination. Brain power. Know theyself, know they program. It took Smith 5 seasons to get to 10 wins. But, as Herbstreit said during LVB broadcast Beavs have done it the right way. And now the Beavs competitiveness probably not going to change a whole lot. Likely to be competitive, week in, week out. News flash, every team wants to win. Winning is one thing. But being consistently competitive is another. Start with that. The wins will take care of themself. Hard work. Grit. Determination. Brain power. Not new, not sexy, but real. Merry Christmas to all and congrats to Beaver nation on a great season!!!
thanks for watching, merry christmas!
Thanks for showing the Beavs some love; you got a new subscriber here !
GO BEAVS! Beaver Nation Believes in our school and our athletes. I bleed orange and black no matter the score or the record. Watching Coach Smith rebuild The DAM is amazing! One game at a time! So proud of the coaches and the players and those of us who stay loyal to OSU! :)
🧡🖤
Love it. Even if I hadn’t grown up here, gone to and graduated from OSU, I would still be a Beaver fan
Im a Duck. But a Duck with respect for the Beavers. With Oregon and Washington going to the Big10, I sure hope the Beavers can find themselves in a conference they deserve to be in. Who knows whats exactly going to happen. Point is, I wish yall were coming with us.
Loved the video. Should have highlighted the defense that got amazing out of no where under our DC
As living in corvallis for long time, its amazing to se how far they have come. GO BEAVS
New stadium will come on line at just the right time! GO BEAVS!
Beavers look great and are very good and I am a very big fan I want to see them to get to the Alamo or holiday or even better for a bowl next year
Was on the Athletic Video Program and it was a honor working under Smith. Such a great guy and Oregon State Royalty!
How did Jonathan Smith do it?
He's done a great job so far. Definitely feels like OSU football again. Can't wait to see where he takes the Beav's next!
Smith knows Corvallis and what it takes to win there better than almost anyone else in CFB (arguably Dennis Erickson or Mike Riley ahead of him, we need to see sustained success from Smith). Smith didn't just believe that the Beavers could be just good, from his own experience he KNEW they could be GREAT.
After Gary Andersen departed, he said that if he couldn't win in Corvallis, nobody could. The team's culture and community were in utter shambles. Smith knew Andersen was ABSOLUTELY wrong, and took Andersen's players and created a winning culture and program in Corvallis. This year's seniors were in the program for the last year of GA.... What an incredible turnaround. From 1-11, to 10-3. Nobody would, or could, embrace that situation like Smith did, and what a contrast it is to new coaches today telling old players to basically hit the road. Smith has tremendous faith in Oregon State and Corvallis. Combine that with his incredibly underrated football IQ, continuity of staff, and his work ethic, Smith has built a great foundation for continued success.
@@GamingPast30 don’t worry he’ll take many L’s vs oregon
@@dashien2605 Like he did this year?
@@MinkJu oregon state fans can celebrate their little win this year, just know oregon is coming back to smoke them 😂
As a Beavs fan I loved this season. So much fun to watch and see growth. QB was the weak link, but Gulbranson showed very raw potential and the addition of DJ from Clemson should be positive.
I was a little unsure about the hire when it happened, I kind of wanted Smith to prove his head coaching chops at a non Power-5 school first... but in the end I knew he would work his butt off to make OSU great, so I was cautiously optimistic. If ANYBODY knew what it took to win at Oregon State, it was Coach Smith. And he has delivered. In hindsight, an absolutely brilliant hire. I really hope he can stick around and turn OSU into a perennial powerhouse.
It's funny, when I was growing up I remember all the talk about Smith being a head coach one day. Clearly he wasn't NFL player talent and was a student of the game, so it seemed only natural. There is that famous clip of Keith Jackson talking about him being a head coach one day during the 2000 Civil War. I remember thinking in middle school about how cool that would be if Niner was our coach one day?! And here we are.
It also makes me feel old. I've been posting Beaver highlights to UA-cam longer than some of these commenters have been alive. Where's the Tylenol?
First basketball, then football.. beavers are on the rise!
I grew up on the Oregon Coast, in Newport, about 45 minutes away from Oregon State. I'm so glad they are doing well!
This is so well done...thank you! New Sub
Welcome!
The best season in program history had Jonathan Smith at QB, the 3rd ten win season had Jonathan Smith at head coach. That is not a coincidence. Watch out for Tristan Gebbia to become a great coach within the next several years, because Jonathan Smith taught him. Landing DJ Uiagalelei in the portal was a big get. They could have another 10 win team on their hands next year. Their rich cousins 45 minutes away will always have advantages, but Smith will not let that be an excuse. Go Beavs!
I believe I heard that jebbia is going to be kept on as a coach assistant as well. Imo good move, and building a great future coach.
Great job. Excellent summary of the Beaver program. Love Coach Smith. Go Beavs!
Can’t believe you finna hit 100k
Last year we won every single home game and rushed the feild everything. This year we crushed everything. We are not a “winning” school like UW or Stanford. It is so much fun watching my team kill it and have fun while doing it. This school has the most school spirit I have ever seen.
As a current OSU student, there's going to be a statue of Jonathan Smith in front of Reser Stadium in a couple years.
I think this 10-3 season has opened the recruiting opportunities for OSU. Smith is a smart, savvy, risk taking coach. He has proven he can grow and develop talent passed over by the big names the past few years and make competitive players into a real "team." Finally, this has not gone unnoticed by prospective players. His 2023 round 1 recruiting is probably his best. With some shortcomings at QB this year he then he picked up the #1 QB in the transfer portal. I think I'll attend the spring scrimmage game again to see how things are shaping up. As an alumni and long suffering Beaver fan, I'm cautiously optimistic this program is on the move now. I can hardly wait! Go Beavers.
I'm a Duck fan & can honestly say that i knew when OSU hired Jonathan Smith, it was gonna be trouble for UO. The Platypus Bowl is really starting to resemble the rivalry it was in the late 90's/early 00's. And i've gotta give Smith a little extra credit because even though he came up during those days under Dennis Erickson, i don't foresee him developing the questionable repututation Erickson had.
Can't say i'm glad to see the Beavs beat the Ducks. But at least it's a good rivalry again. The Huskies on the other hand... i wouldn't mind seeing them revert back to the Gilbertson/Willingham level of play.
I think we can become the new Utah. The blue collar tough team that may not get the flashy recruits but we develop our players. Go Beavs!
Great video but what’s that beat in the background
Go Beaves. Our son is an OSU grad. Our Son in law is an U Of O grad. His daughter is an OSU grad. His son is on the U of O football team. We have had a lot of fun in the rivalry over the years. But I now root for both teams until they play each other. Now, I guess I need to pray for whom to support.
This was great. Could you please do a “IMPOSSIBLE rise of Tulane football?
You could tell from the first year Johnathan took over it was going to be good. The offense was scoring a lot of points but the defense couldn't keep up. They couldn't outscore everyone, but you knew eventually they would.
Nothing made me happier than seeing our coach with COTY for the PAC 12. This program is electric. Beavers football rules. Hopefully now we will get some better recruits but even if we don’t JS has proven that he can out coach anyone. I’m not saying beavers in the CFP next year…but watching out. The beavs are busy!
I'm not a Oregon State fan, I'm glad to them see with a 10 wins season.
People forget that we’ve been a decent football program for a while but once Riley left we got Anderson and he was absurdly bad. Anderson sucked and it’s not like we didn’t have any talent on his teams. I remember when we had that intern coach we won are last 3 games and only had one win before that. He also had are best QB on the bench! I don’t remember his name, it was like McMillan or something like that but it was clear he was the best QB and he transferred to Fresno State and was really good
and then days after this video DJU joined the program things are looking good.
Finished stadium, highly regarded QB, 10 win season, arguably the hottest rising coach....I smell some good home cooking
Looks like you uploaded this vid a day early. Adding DJU is only going to make the team better
Couldn't be happier as a Beavers fan
I'm a Beavers fan all my life and this is the best team I've ever seen. I'm 27 so I was too young to see the Fiesta bowl team.
This team will be competitive and win 7-10 games routinely for the next decade
Riley wasn't as popular as you described. He was well liked for many years and is a fantastic person, but by the time he left there had been several years of fans calling for his firing, including a website dedicated to it that had gained a lot of traction. The Anderson hire was mostly seen as a real steal because of his credentials, so most Beaver fans were pumped about that, but he ended up being a complete dumpster fire, as you mentioned.
Someone should make a movie about the Beavers. Perhaps they will do even better next year by knocking off Oregon and Utah for the Pac 12 Championship. So proud of them. Go Beavers!
I’ve been a life long beaver fan since the early 2000s! I loved mike Riley but definitely felt he was dwindling and lost his fire towards the end in 2014, I was convinced Gary Andersen was the answer. And boy was I wrong. I wasn’t sure how smith would be, I thought he was just a discount hire but he definitely has lived up to his promises.
I guess what Smith did at OSU is only a surprise if you haven’t done basic research on him. See what his coaches and his old bosses had to say about him and you won’t be that surprised. The program isn’t about buying a bunch of players the program is about getting overlooked and decent players and bringing out their potential.
Do one on Kalen DeBoer and the sudden turnaround of Washington
As a beavers fan I am happy the direction of the program.. and tbh after Mike Riley it was dismal at best.. that being said I haven't had this much fun rooting for the beavers in a while.. both offense and Defense are on the right path. That being said our QB situation this year especially wasn't that great. So I'm hoping our new transfer QB from Clemson helps us with that. That being said LETS GOO BEAVERS!! Can't wait until next season

Do Oregon State fans like Gary Anderson for leaving the buyout behind, or look at him in a better light? I am honestly curious about that one.
When he was hired, not going to lie I was ecstatic. Seeing how he built Utah State up before going to Wisconsin had me feeling he'd bring the right vibe to Corvallis. However in hindsight that was clearly not the case. I don't think his approach to Oregon State was the right one as he seemed to treat it like a total rebuild, which wasn't necessarily. OSU was mediocre during the last years of Riley but that didn't necessitate an entire rebuild which what Andersen seemed to be doing. And of course during the course the Beavs regressed from mediocre at best to a complete bottom dweller. While Andersen's time was not the best of times in anyway, I do commend him for acknowledging that things weren't getting better and that he's not the guy for it. Him leaving his buyout behing definitely made me respect him.
Foregoing his buyout is the one and only contribution he made to OSU, but it was a big one.
No, everyone hates him. They just see it as the least bad thing he did after dropping a grenade in the program. I hear there are other unspoken of (legal) reasons why he left quick and with cash on the table as well.
LETS GO BEAVS. im from albany oregon been watching the beavs my whole life. coach smith is the real deal. scoooooo beavs!!!!
So... Beavs will be solid in 2023. Plus, DJU? Beavs 2023 playoffs.
With DJ at Qb it’s pac 12 championship & rose bowl for us. That’s all we want
The Oregon State Beavers: “The Most underrated football program of all time”
And then signed DJU as a transfer. Big expectations for the Beavs!
From 1972 through 1997, Oregon State didn't have a single season with as many as 5 wins. That's 26 consecutive seasons. Talk about a program being dead...
Shhh..,,Smith is a remarkable coach.
It helps that he got too learn and coach under chris petersen
Beavs just extended the defensive coordinator too. Which is a big win
Mike Riley's teams always started slow and got better as the season went on. You wanted to catch them early.
They were what 11-1 under Dennis Erickson with Jonathan Smith at QB and TJ Houshmanzadah and Chad Johnson at WR when they went to the Fiesta Bowl and destroyed Notre Dame. I am a Duck fan so the late season collapse when the playoff was right there killed me but I always root for Oregon State as long as they are not playing the Ducks and I root for Boise State and Washington State as long as they are not playing Oregon or Oregon State. I knew that Smith was a good hire, the only time I have seen him make multiple bad decisions in a game in this year against Washington, Beavs should have won that game.
I’m pretty damn proud of the Beavers.
Coach Smith and his Beavs scared off the Trojans and Bruins. Go Beavs!
Wait till next year with DJ coming to Corvallis, Beavs will in great shape to compete or PAC 12 title. We have not had this level of QB talent in awhile and our D is the best ever. Assuming Martinez is healthy and DJ gels with his receivers I see this team as a preseason top 20 with sights on winning PAC12
Do Cal football situation from good in 2000's to terrible the last decade
Thanks for the pac-12 coverage
Where's the part where Gary Andersen walked away from Oregon State during the MIDDLE of the 2017-2018 season and 12 million dollars?
I love my beavs so much
Much as I love ❤️ you. Go dux.
Oregon St. future looks dim coach Smith left to coach at Michican State an two of its quater backs also left so OSU is left in a bad spot.
