*** Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation. Do not spray just alcohol-diluted in water.
Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal or none of the new signs are present.
It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants.
Once a week - Wipe off visible bugs with 2-3 drops of dish soap diluted in 20oz water and LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil.
*** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home.
Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks.

Thank you so much!! I just discovered them here about an hour ago, and mixed up your solution and sprayed them. I do have one question. Do I need to turn off the grow lamps until the solution dries? Would it have been best to spray at night so that the plants aren't getting any sun? The reason I ask is because the neem oil does say to apply when the plants aren't in direct light.

I have to say “thank you, thank you and thank you.” I have been struggling with a spider mites infestation and refused to give up on my plants. I watched your video over and over again and for a month I fought them and won. Thank you so very much. My fiancé wanted me to throw them away and he would buy me new ones and I could not let him. Hi Maris,
Yeas, not an easy thing to deal with. Stay positive and consistent!
I would recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer when bugs are the most active.
Spray leaves (top and under) lightly once every 2-3 weeks.
Gnats can only greed and thrive in a constantly moist environment. If you have this issue you need to adjust your watering.

To get rid of pests and clean my plants, I use a dormant oil recipe that was developed at Cornell University : dormant oil recipe contains 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 5 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide(3%), 2 tablespoons of castile soap -- which is made from an olive oil base -- and 1 gallon of water. Keeps the bugs away and the plants leaves look healthy ... Great video, thank you ... Have a great day ... ✌😎☀

      @@perettelear6603 Good afternoon Perette.
I use the dormant oil at least once a month to clean the plants, but first: Try a little bit of oil on a leaf or a spot on the plant that is out of sight, just to make sure that the plant responds well to it, doesn't turn brown or discolored (It shouldn't but; just in case). Personally I use the oil once every two weeks to get rid of pests ... Once a month to clean my plants. Spray to oil on the leaves and stems, wipe with a clean cloth or paper towels ... That's it ... Have a great day ... :-)

      Hi Nora,
I am happy my video is helpful.
It should not take a long time to get rid of a very low infestation.
If in 3 weeks you no longer see any signs of mites, you can stop the treatment.
After you stop the treatment, make sure to check your plant at least once a week to make sure the mites are not back.
After the treatment, you can use the Neem Oil - amzn.to/2un4fcz - LIGHTLY once every 2-3 weeks as the preventative measure to lower the risk of infestation. Palms are mite's favorites :)

I'm a bit confused. After you sprayed the water-alcohol mix you said: after washing your plant apply the alcohol-soap solution. So do you have to wash off the alcohol-water solution and then apply the soap-alcohol mixture?

      Hello Silvia,
      Thank you for watching 🌱
      1. Use water-alcohol to clean leaves. Wipe off this solution with paper towel.
      2. Spray leaves with alcohol-soap solution after cleaning. Do not wipe leaves after.
*** if power washing leaves of plants like Bella Palm that have many small leaves, where you can't wipe every leaf, allow the leaves to dry after the power wash before spraying with soap-alcohol solution.
      3. Repeat once every 7-10 days.
      4. Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal.
Spray Lightly leaves, stems, and soil once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present.
*** Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation.
      Hope this clarifies the process.

I found two tiny white bugs (not mealy bugs) crawling on my ficus elastica. I swiped them off and just took off two more. I used a magnifying glass and I’m pretty sure they’re spider mites. It sucks bc this plant was just about to come out of quarantine. I just checked the soil and there’s tiny white bugs crawling around. I have a phobia of bugs so I think I’m done with plants. I don’t think I’m going to buys anymore. I just can’t accept the fact that bugs come with them.

      Hi Kamryn,
Don't give up on plants yet!!! 😀
Here are a few tips for you:
*** Use Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 for all your plants as a preventative measure (repellent) during Spring and Summer, or when you have a sick plant at home.
Spray lightly leaves top and under + top soil once every 2-3 weeks.
      *** For the treatment:
      - Before treating a sick plant, try to spray the solution I recommend only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation.
      - Switch to Neem Oil as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal, or none of the new signs are present.
*** It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants.
Once a week - Wipe off visible bugs with 2-3 drops of dish soap diluted in 20oz water and LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil.
      Green Luck! 🌱🌱🌱

Sorry if you have already answered this, but how do you isolate a plant inside the house when there are other plants there too? Does it need to go in a separate room alone from all other plants with door closed? Does AC in that room need to be not used? Thanks!!

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  Рік тому

      Hi!
If possible, it is best to move the sick plant to a separate room.
If this is not an option, place the sick plant as far from other plants as possible and away from fan/AC.
Wash your hands after treating the sick plant before attending other plants.
I would also recommend using Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 for all your plants as a preventative measure when you have a sick plant at home or during Spring-Summer when all bugs are very active. Neem Oil is a great repellent.
Spray plants lightly once every 2-3 weeks.
P.S. Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation.
Switch to Neem Oil as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal.
Spray Lightly once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present.
*** It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants.
Once a week - Wipe off visible bugs with 2-3 drops of dish soap diluted in 20oz water and LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil.

Yes, regular washing of plants with water (spraying and/or wiping leaves) does help to prevent pest issue and get rid of pests if any managed to land on a plant.

How do I NOT to get rid of a live regular spider (named Elvira) that lives in my Croton plant (for like 8 mo now) in the window among 80 + other plants in semi-hydroponics, so I can care for the plant, without hurting the spider and let it continue living in my plant?? I need to take the plant and rinse it out and clean it up. How can I do that with Elvira in it? I'm having a hard time finding advise online. Could I put her in a terrarium that I have? it's in the kitchen and has a plant grow light.
    TY!! Elvira!!
I have an amazing bug spray recipe to share-- My Critter Spray: 1 TBSP each: peppermin, & tea tree,Castile soap (not dish soap) I use Dr Woods Castile soap. 1 TBSP Neem oil, 3 TBSP’s hydrogen peroxide (3%), 1/2 cup isopropyl (70% is fine), (dollar store) 4 cups distilled or reverse osmoses water. WORK AWESOME!
Spray water on the leaves to blast any critters off. Then spray over and under leaves and the soil with the DIY CRITTER SPRAY. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse. (if it’s the first time, if you have an infestation, or for new plants you might need to repeat) Be careful and test plants first. Especially thin leaves or fussy leaf species, they are sensitive. Spray under planter too and in the water tray. Bugs like to hide there. ESPECIALLY THRIP!! UGGHHH!! I have holes on the bottom of all my planters so that I can flush them out.

what can I do about that?
I started spraying with rubbing alcohol and showering it with a hose as it is in my pattio right now.
    do you have other suggestions?
also, will the affected leaves regain colour and health once the infestation is gone?

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  3 роки тому

      Hi Laura,
Stay consistent with washing and the treatment.
Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal or none of the new signs are present, as using the solution for too long can damage/burn the leaves.
Spray the leaves lightly with Neem Oil top and under + topsoil once a week for a month, and then (if no new spread is showing up) switch to once every 2-3 weeks.
Wash leaves every week to prevent the spread!
Pest attacks are higher for plants that live outdoors. :)
*** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant in your green family.
Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks.
Unfortunately, damaged leaves will not get the green color back :(

I have a massive infestation on my monstera. The spidermites are now in the soil. The problem is I refuse to give up on it, since I basically raised it. I bought it for $6, it had three leaves, it now looks like a tree. I am devastated and I have tried so many things. I was thinking of stripping the plant down to its roots and wash it off completely first, then follow your tips. Do you think that would be a good idea or a waste of time? I am so sad about my poor plant! :(

      @Mycityplants  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi! Thank you for watching!
Sorry that your Monstera plant is under the spider mites attack :(
Yes, the best thing to do now is prune the plant back, take it out of the pot, cut any bad roots, wash roots well with Dawn dish soap and repot the plant it in fresh potting mix.
*** Best to discard the old pot and get the new one.
If the roots are healthy, the plant will recover and grow new leaves for you soon.
*** If only a few heathy roots left on the cutting, you may place it in water, and when more roots grow, pot it.
Remember to change the water frequently!!!
      Fertilize during Spring-Summer.
Wishing you lots of green success!

Thank you so much for the video!
Just solved the fungus gnats problem and started to enjoy my plants again, then found these evil pests on my sweetheart ivy (in the kitchen), string of dolphins and string of hearts (in my bedroom). 😭 I am scared that other plants close to them might get it too...
Couldn't really see the mites nor find any webbing, but from the shriveled leaves (not a lot thankfully) and bite marks on the SOH, and the amount of leaves dried out on the dolphins (mostly close to the base), should be them... 💔 Does it mean it's still a moderate infestation?
However I found the ivy in a worse shape. Also lost a lot of the leaves on the base, and found one leaf with a tiny bit webbing around the petiole (cut and threw that leaf away already).
The string of dolphin and hearts have so many tiny leaves, so I don't even know how I could wipe every single one... I just sprayed them with the alcohol and dish soap mixture before watching your video (I have been googling). Your video gave me more hope in this battle. 🙏🏼
Honestly I don't care about the ivy much as it was an impulsive buy and relatively new to my collection, but the dolphins was one of the first few plants I got when I started my plant journey this year. 😭 I love my string of hearts too. They have grown so much and long. I am just devastated thinking about it.😞
Sorry for the long vent! Didn't find much information about spider mites on string of things and have been so stressed out for the past 24 hours. 😭

      Hi Ting Ting,
      Thank you for watching!
      - Ivy is very attractive to spider mites:( Based on your description; this is the only plant with a heavy infestation (webs).
      - Yes, to just spraying leaves and stems on SOH and SOD.
Since the infestation is light on these plants, do the alcohol/soap weekly treatment for 3-4 weeks and then switch to Neem Oil.
Use the Neem oil once a week to treat these guys until the problem is solved.
      - Keep these plants away from other plants while in treatment.
      - Remove all affected leaves.
      - Spray (LIGHTLY) all other plants with the Neem Oil amzn.to/2un4fcz once a week until the problem with affected plants is solved to prevent the spread.

If just a couple of leaves, then you have a very light infestation. You can rut off the effected leaves or follow my recommendations to treat these.
If you are removing the infested parts of the plant, use Neem Oil (as I have suggested in this video) to treat the whole plant to kill invisible eggs and to prevent mites from coming back.

I did not cut off any infected leaves, is that why I could not stop the spreading? I really hope you respond because this is the second time I have lost an ivy to spider mites. Thanks!

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Ainsley,
Ivy plants are known for spider mite issue. They are very desirable :)
If the infestation is heavy but you want to keep the plant, it is best to cut off infested stems/leaves. If leaves are badly damaged by mites, alcohol/soap treatment is not the best option. Next time try to treat just a few leaves first to see how the plant reacts to the solution.
If the roots of your ivy are healthy, after removing all the dead stems, it should grow back. You should report the plant in new and fresh soil as well.
I would recommend using Neem Oil once every 2-3 weeks as the repellent and it will help to prevent an infestation.

      Hi Betty,
Spider mites generally don't live in potting soil. You might have the soil mites ...
No matter what kind of bugs are there, first of all, the plant needs to get fresh and clean soil.
If there are just a few, you can replace the top 2"-3" of the potting mix.
If you see lots of creatures crawling on the soil, then repot the whole plant.
*** Make sure to wash the pot (inside and outside) well with dish soap and then spray it with 70% alcohol before potting the plant back in.
After soil refreshing, spray topsoil and the plant lightly once every two weeks with (see options below) to keep mites away!

Mold is the result of overwatering. Here is my video about how to prevent and deal with this issue: bit.ly/3qtI1T6

You don't wipe off the soap and alcohol solution correct?

Hi! Thats right. Let it air-dry.
*** Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation.

Would you say the infestation shown on the alocacea is moderate or light?

Hi! The Alocasia in this video is pretty close to a heavy infestation - 90% of the plant was infested.

I have a majesty palm and the leaves have a dusty film. Doesn't seem to be spider mites. Used your solution anyway to be sure. Will Neem Oil make the leaves shiny again?

      Hi! Thank you for watching!
*** Before continuing to treat the whole plant, use the solution only on a few leaves (part of the plant), as it can be damaging for some leaves and burn them if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation.
Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal, or none of the new signs are present.
It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants.
      LIGHTLY spray once a week.
*** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer when bugs are very active, or when you have a sick plant at home.
Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks.
To make leaves shiny they need to be cleaned/wiped with diluted Neem Oil (I use milk for my plants bit.ly/3wmVGPK 😀).
Since Palms have too many leaves and wiping them will take a long time, best to give your Palm a good heavy shower to clean the leaves :)

Since Iresine plant has many little leaves, cleaning each individually will be way too much :)
So, once a week, use powerful water stream to wash leaves off all visible mites, and then LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil.
