Cicero mocked Cato's purity in his letters to Atticus and he thought that Cato and some of the others were uppity. Cato and other nobles were willing to work with Cicero, but they never fully accepted him as their equal since he was a new man.

Antony hated Cicero because Cicero often made jokes at his expense and delivered a series of orations called the Philippics directed at Antony, calling him a tyrant and enemy of the state.
