The funny part is they tend to know who’s a NY’er and who’s a tourist based on how we walk and act. Times Square is a tourist trap and no true NY’er goes there to visit we just pass through. “Fuck off” is definitely essential though for the scammers who can’t tell we are native NY’ers 🤣

So my aunt, who is Chinese but speaks FLUENT English told me about her trip with her friends to NYC. She a seasoned traveler so she's accustomed to these tourist traps. Literally every city has tourist poachers. Americans just don’t go to Paris so they think it’s an “urban American thing”. Go to New Delhi if you think NYC is full of scammers.
Also be careful with having your face in your phone. Scammers will run into you with something already broken like a pair of glasses then act like you ran into them and broke them and demand you give them cash. If you weren't paying attention, you really won't have much of an argument.
IDK I feel like, once you know that NYC is full of scummy shitbags, you'll know that anything that happens that would normally make you feel guilty was manufactured by one of said shitbags to try and steal your cash. Not having an argument aside, I think just saying "damn that sucks" and walking away doesn't leave them with much recourse.

So the story is believable cause they also tried to scam me but you’re saying that these costume guys are the exact ones that scammed you, I don’t think so 🤔
I'm a native New Yorker and I actually got robbed by the monk guy. This happened when I was teenager but he made me put on a bracelet wishing me luck, but then immediately demanded money from me! So I was trying to write down just $5. But he made me change it to $20 for no reason even though I saw someone else in the list had given him $5. Oh and he was guilt-tripping/gaslighting too like saying it was for a good cause. I was so mad that day. And the worst part is my friend was right next to me the whole time when that was happening but he didn't do anything to stop it. But the monk seemed to be less aggressive towards my friend which meant he could just say no and not get robbed. So unfair. Word of advice, avoid them at all costs and don't let them put anything on you or accept anything.
@@raptordarwish887 Unfortunately he's actually one of the better friends I've had. There were some guys I tried to be friends with that were way too toxic for me. I think he was just caught off guard at that moment too and tried to save his own skin before I could start blaming him.

GTA 4 made fun of those people who hassle you with their mix tapes back in 2008! Those type of people haven’t changed a bit, and R* knows it cause they made a callback to it in 2013 with the same guy still doing the same thing he did 5 years ago.
So the common thread is people are too spineless to say no? Sounds about right. Also the people in costume is pretty funny since, legally, the copyright for the photo goes to the photographer and not the subject, and it's a public space. XD You know, that's before you get into the quagmire of them not owning the rights to the costume character. :D
At the end of the day someone could easily just take the free stuff and then leave. "Thanks for the free mixtape, my buddies and I are gonna get drunk and make fun of it all night!" 🤣
I mean they gave it to you without saying otherwise. Just act busy while leaving the scene. Bonus points for dragging it on longer than 3 minutes- too busy hunting you for the mixtape when they could be scamming others.
The last one actually happened to me when I was like 8 or 9 and a group of Mickie mouses literally held one to me and threatened my uncle and dad to give them money after a photo. I honestly was so scared tbh but my dad pulled me away aggressively and they just backed away from us after that.
I was traveling in New York with my mom and her friend who lives there and there was a green goblin in times Square i wanted picture but before I took it he poured his hand out first for money and my mom was reaching in her bag I thought that wasn't such good idea to pay first and so did her friend so before she did pay my moms friend's slapped her hand grabbed her phone and took the picture first and then gave em a $5 and proceeded to walk as if he was never there he followed us for awhile we just ignored em moms friend mightve seemed rude atm but then she explained everything afterwards
Thank you. It’s crazy how many people try and take advantage of hard worker people or just other people in general. Thanks for being one of the few looking out for us
