The Business of Makeup: Getting Started as a Makeup Artist

- Part 1 of what could be many more videos. In this video I discuss the first steps to becoming a makeup artist. How do you get started? The pros and cons of going to makeup school. What do you do if you can't afford makeup school?
I never went to school to learn how to do makeup, much later in my career I took a short (very short) course on how to do some out of kit special effects just to fill in the gaps. I have worked with fantastic artists many of whom did and did not go to school to learn makeup, so keep that in mind. I'm hoping this video will shed some light on the first steps of getting into this industry.

There are a few factors in how to become a makeup professional . One plan I found which successfully combines these is the bloom blueprint crusher (check it out on google) definately the most helpful guide that I've heard of.look at all the great info .

Understanding sanitation, hygiene and universal precautions is important.
Great to hear someone talking about it in a more real sense instead of glamorised. People starting out need to know the nitty-gritty ! its job, like every other job there will be good, bad, things that are fun and also things that can be stressful.

I really appreciate this video, I'm 17 and seeing this helped open my eyes. I decided to practice on people once i got to college. Talking to my teacher she has her own hair salon and she told me it her a lot time, effort, and patience to be were she is at now. Thank you for this video this just helped me not get so discouraged when trying to become a makeup artist.

Thank you! I completely agree. I used to be a airbrush artist and i think the art is just a skill .You either have it or you don't but truthfully you need to be business minded and as an artist you have to understand allergies as well.

I went to school got my certificate a year ago and have had very little paid work so i take the opportunity to do time for print when i can to build my portfolio and experience i think this is a great way to network also with other local professionals. Thank you so much ! I love makeup and started to learn from training school . When I start to do makeup for other person , I found it is so different from what I usually do on myself . It looks heavy , it doesn't look like the person that used to be . Most of the time my makeup aged the person a few years which I am really disappointed for the makeup I have done . I started to feel worried to ask my fd for my makeup practice , As I worry I disappoint them too . Glad I found your video , it's very encouraging . I understand practice is important . And I hope I can gain more knowledge on makeup on UA-cam . Please keep sharing your thoughts and tips with us . in the country I live makeup school is just full of misinformation and youtube-instatrends (I've had a teacher that suggest her students to use the silicon bras to apply makeup on clients...) and barely talk about actual color theory, hygiene, techniques and so... finding your UA-cam channel is teaching me sooooo much!
