I'm a diehard Pirates fan and I think it's a travesty that Pete isn't in the Hall of Fame because of what he did as a player. In order to ensure he wins that game and doesn’t lose any money, he decides to burn through his bullpen, completely screwing the team for the next game that he hasn’t bet on. Or, imagine somebody is aware of his betting and decides to blackmail him, saying “if you don’t lose the next one, I’m going public”. There are multiple scenarios like that. Him betting on his team to win means he had faith in his club, but it doesn’t mean that the betting is harmless.

I grew up a die hard Reds fan and my grandfather took me to games at the old Crosley Field. No one was a bigger Pete Rose fan than I was, but that was ages ago. Time marches on. The man has paid his debt and then some. Do they want him to get in his knees and beg and kiss Selig and Vincent's white butts? It ain't happening. Move on.

I used to be very much in favor of Pete being in the HoF but when it came out that he bet as a player, he lost me. He's continually lied all these years and there are others more deserving of reinstatement such as Buck Weaver and Joe Jackson. The argument about it being wrong for PED users getting in but not Pete is also bs. Pete used amphetamines like most other players of his generation. Those are huge performance boosters.
Same. It ticked me off to no end when Jim Gray questioned him the night of the all century team and Pete was indignant about it. Then when Pete came out and admitted it in his book, I was done defending him. Pete continues to be his own worst enemy and continues to try and justify what he did. If Pete really learned from his mistakes, he wouldn’t be gambling period. Instead he signs autographs joking about it so obviously he isn’t that remorseful about it.

My only prob would’ve been Pete betting on his team to lose betting on other teams I have no issue.
It still undermines the integrity of the game. Think about it like this. He bet on his team to win as a player/manager. Now, suppose his team is playing in a close game he has bet on. In order to ensure he wins that game and doesn’t lose any money, he decides to burn through his bullpen, completely screwing the team for the next game that he hasn’t bet on. Or, imagine somebody is aware of his betting and decides to blackmail him, saying “if you don’t lose the next one, I’m going public”. There are multiple scenarios like that. Him betting on his team to win means he had faith in his club, but it doesn’t mean that the betting is harmless.
