- Peter and Cathy reach a milestone in their journey to recreate history. In this episode they place the final logs in the blockhouse walls in their traditional 1700s frontier fort, aptly named Kelly Station. This episode is not just a demonstration of building techniques but a testament to their dedication and passion for bringing the past to life.
As the walls of Kelly Station now stand tall, Peter takes a moment to share the vision for the next phase: designing and building the roof. While embarking on this new challenge, Peter also begins the installation of the blockhouse stairs.
This episode promises not only to showcase the physical building of a historical structure but also to provide a deep dive into the motivations, struggles, and consequences of early American colonization. It's a journey through time, reflecting on the past to understand the present better.
This video is not just a construction diary; it's a homage to the past, a hands-on history lesson, and a testament to the enduring spirit of pioneering. Whether you're a history buff, a woodworking enthusiast, or someone who cherishes the art of building and storytelling, this video offers insights into the challenges of traditional construction methods, the importance of community support, and the lessons history can teach us about resilience and innovation. We're passionate about sharing our adventures and a slice of history with you. You just demonstrated to the viewers why they didn't need a gym in the 18th century. Everyday life was a workout. Excellent work, Peter and Cathy.
You think they’d give me my money back, lol. Your spot on, I’ve never needed a gym membership.
You and Catherine work hard to bring a wonderful content to an appreciative audience. Keep well and good luck in all you do.
Thanks so much, Hayward.
For a gentleman no longer in his first flush of youth you and your good lady show extreme vigour for the many projects you attempt ,and complete!
Truly wonderful to watch and enjoy.
Kind of you to say, I’ve definitely got a great partner!
Congratulations!! Peter you are one the the more intelligent creatures on this earth, you build your fortress before the war starts!! Wishing you many more enjoyable years on this earth!! And Kathy too!!
One never knows in these crazy times when one will be needing a fortified home! It has and continues to be a great project.
Awww Peter I think we both did well not to curse when the log rolled off! Exceptional work matey, well done.
Well at least when the camera was rolling, lol! Kinda got to take things in stride.
You and Cathy are doing a great job Peter. I love seeing this whole compound built.
Getting closer to completion… slow, but sure!
what an incredible achievement , not just the block house but the entire compound. and done by hand ! Peter and Kathy I have so enjoyed watching you build this , listening to your stories and being totally immersed in your Time Travel. absolutely love it. congratulations.
Wow, thank you, such kind words.
Peter all I can say ' is you are an amazing man for taking on such a monumental task . You are a true treasure of Canada and through your historical knowledge ' your achievements and your memory will live long after you are gone for people everywhere. I have great respect for you ' and I salute you from Wyoming USA
I thank you Sir for the kind words. Btw, I love the State of Wyoming, you live in Gods country!
Thank you you also live in a beautiful country someday I wish to see your accomplishments in person. What you are doing will be your legacy and how you will be remembered ' not many men can lay claim to that.
@@grizz6150 Flattered sir. Always room at our fire when you visit.
Peter and Cathy, I can really appreciate the life’s of our ancestors and the effort it took to survive. Alot of grunting and huffin/puffin indeed. Dang log anyway. Great work my friend!
It certainly did take both effort and determination. Funny, dang wasn’t the word that came to mind when the log went, lol.
Hi Peter it's Ron it was awesome to see you at the living history show thank you for taking a picture with me keep up the amazing work God bless
My pleasure, Rn, it was good to see you.
LAST LOG, CANT BELIEVE IT. - ALL THIS WITH JUST THE TWO OF YOU. MY WORD. KEN ROCKY MTS. FANTASTIC JOB.
Last in the blockhouse, but about 700 to go on the palisade walls.
I’m enjoying your channel immensely, but I missed the wee bit of history that usually accompanies your videos. They are educational and entertaining. Thank you for such enlightening content amid the swamp that is social media. God bless you sir!
Noted! Cathy did say we needed a wee bit of history, but time got away on me.
Great job Peter and Cathy. Happy weekend!
Thanks, you too!
❤😊😊 amazingly beautiful structure! Well done ! You and Kathy stay safe !
Thank you kindly
Can't believe it's Friday already. Equally hard to believe what you two have done. Great seeing you again last week.
The pleasure was mine!
Huge physical effort from you Peter - you deserve a great deal of respect for that alone but when we add on top of that your design skills and your enthusiasm and your self-control with the falling log... Well done to you both. Hugely interesting project that is beyond the scale of what most of us would ever try, especially in senior years!
There has been a wee bit of effort alright and as to my self control, you don’t see my reaction once the camera was turned off, lol. I appreciate your kind words.
Good episode, when the beam fell and you leaned against the Wall my first thought was I’m feel’in you my friend. Really glad no one got hurt.
Yup right over the wall and Cathy was behind the camera.
I was grunting along with you as you were lifting those logs. I hope I can soon join you for a day. As soon as the apple trees flower we halt the pruning.
Love to have you drop by, always room at our fire.
When that log rolled off, all I could think of was Catherine. Who of course, was safely behind the camera. It's a wonder our ancestors lived long enough to establish families in the first place. This episode also really brings home the importance of staying active from a young age.
You’ve hit the nail on the head about staying active… “ Never let the old man in”, one f my father’s favorite quotes.
Wow Peter, had me chewing my nails on this one! Amazing strength and stamina you have there. Better than I could do for sure!
Peter you never cease to amaze me with your strength and stamina to say nothing of your age.
Great video and I await next week’s video with much excitement.
@@rocklickranch2804 Thank you, sir.
@@rickvandenheuvel Your too kind, Rick, thank you.
As I see the fort progressing and taking shape, my inner 12 year old boy is thrilled. That was what my imagination pictured that my friends and I were building in the woods near our neighborhood oh so many years ago. I realize that this is an important view back into the history of both of the United States and Canada, when both of our nations were part of Great Britain, but i cannot help to believe there's a little of that same feeling that you are experiencing Peter. Maybe I am wrong, but no matter, it has been a wonderful time watching the construction, and tremendously educational. Great job!
You’ve hit the nail on the head, that feeling you refer too is what motivates me every morning. Heck, I’m 12 all over again.
All I can say is I'll bet you both sleep great at night. Looks so nice.
Indeed, falling asleep is rarely an issue … unless I’m trying to figure out how to build something, lol!
Peter you and Cathy have a lot in common with that Beaver when it comes to hard work. I also hope your musket wasn't too far away.
Wonder if I could train that critter to fell the trees I need … thanks for planting the seed!
Appreciate your efforts and dedication! We've all been there. Maybe not logs on a block house but , you know what I mean. Try,try again they say. Wonderful progress as always! Thanks again and keep your powder dry!
Yup, might as well take things in stride, because that is life. Watch yer top knot!
What a monumental task! You ought to have some servants at this point if you hope to defend a whole fort!
Nope, but I’ve 5 kids and 10 grandchildren… should be enough once trained!
I have to say with you both its "where there is a will there is a way" ! First set back that never stops Peter Kelly. Im here wishing you all the best going forward. Thank you for sharing always makes for a great TGIF :)
Love that! There is always a way to accomplish a task!
Hey Peter! You sure made that look easy! Of course, with Good Help (a.k.a. Cathy) most any job would go smoothly! Kelly's Station is really coming together. Well Done to the both of you!
Thanks 👍 … Cathy is the best partner one could hope for!
where are the young reenactors when there is heavy lifting to be done , you are doing a great job
Right? Thanks for watching.
All I can say is Kelly Station will be secure especially when Cathy is in charge. Nice job. I enjoy the channel!
I think so too … no one’s going to invade her home, lol. I
Pete you are the man
Hi. Congratulation! Perfect teamwork and some really good ideas. I am very surprised, that the nails hold one side of these logs. And you have for shure one of the best smelling workspaces🙂 All of this makes me want to jump right into the next plane, offer a hand 🙂and participate in your great project. In France there is a place called Guedelon, where they build a castle trying to figure out the original techniques. Firstly all the scholars where "quite high on their horses" now they are happy to learn something new, that all the papers and archives could not teach them!!!. Best Greetings from Germany Chris
Good evening Chris from this side of the pond. Should you ever find yourself on that plane, there be a place at our table.
coming along so nice my friend
Thanks 👍
It's amazing what you have accomplished with your fort. When you consider an entire militia or an army would build a fort at the time. You and your wife could rival any militia. My hat's off to you.😊
As long as they don’t attack in mass, lol. Thanks for watching.
You, my friend have one hell of a constitution and your helper also. You both are revered and respected much. Kelly station is going to be a dandy!!
Thank you and our hope is historians will visit and enjoy it with us.
It's a good day when I see Woodland Escape has posted a nerw video! I imagine you and I have about the same number of winters and I do OK, but man-o-man, your efforts are gagantuan! Congratulations on that top story!
Well Jeff, at least when the cameras running, lol. Thanks for the compliment.
Sorry for the extra work but you always seem to take things with stride. You guys do an awesome job on your videos, thanks for all your hard work.
Thanks for watching! I never found anger much of a tool to be honest. Not that I’ve haven’t given it a go on occasion, but with little or no success!
Oh no! My heart ached when the log fell. Uh so much work. You are both amazing for all that you are doing! Nice job on the stairs. That roof is going to be high up there. Be careful, we want you around for a good long while yet!
Thanks so much and sound advice I might add. Thank you for your interest in our channel.
I was wondering why I hadn't heard from you, then I thought maybe I didn't hit send after I saw your video. So here we go again. Great job, the place is starting to take shape. Never realized how much work was involved. Good thing Kathy is there to help . Man, is she strong. You married well Peter. Take care and keep your powder dry
I did indeed… the best life partner ever! We are getting there albeit a wee bit slow.
It sure is coming along nicely thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and yes, one log at a time!
Happy Friday from Louisiana. WOW! That is Amazing! What a team. What a blessed adventure you must have throughout your life-building journey. I blow the Shofar over y’all for many years yet to come.
Thank you! You too!
Monumental episode Peter and Cathy!!! Incredible accomplishment 👏🏻. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻
A good feeling of getting close on this one … now onto the palisade walls.
Peter, I really enjoy watching you build. But honestly you need to give your body and your heart a good long rest. Seriously.
💛 from 🇨🇦.
The way I see it, I’ll be have a long time to rest when I pass over. Kinda like squeezing in as much as I can, lol. I do thank you for your concern.
Good morning from Alberta! 😊
It is definitely looking like a block house now. Great work. I so want to do that but I have too much to do getting the garden set up and the fence to keep the deer out. Maybe this winter.
Ah that gardening thing is coming soon and will require some time off from fort building. Seedlings are started.
Geez Peter, how's your back! Mine hurt just watching!
Tired most days, but not bothersome, thank goodness, I’ve a long way to go!
Looks great! Good job.
Thank you! Cheers!
HoooEEE that's some hard work.
Ah, but satisfy!
So happy to see the last log. Been down in hospital for last week with hip and femier break. Been doing F+I war and Rangers for over 30 years an now 78 years young so keep it up.
Sorry to hear of your issue with your young bones. Good to hear that you are still enjoying living history. I trust you’ll have a full recovery.
Gah! Had a feeling just before that log went down and wanted to be there holding it stable while you moved the other one!
Thought I felt you here in spirit, lol!
Awesome. Somehow I saw that coming. And shucks wouldn't have been my first choice of words...lol
You and me both! There May have been a couple of other adjectives used, lol!
Nice job, looks great. I am glad you are so strong, keep going,I lost my strength when I stoped moving.
Some say my problem is that I can’t sit still, lol!
Sitting in my favorite chair next to the fireplace cold Lug Tread in hand. (My new favorite. Grabbed some on the way home.) Congrats on getting the last of the logs up!! My heart sank when that log fell hoping Cathy was nowhere near. Great stuff as usual. The work ethic of both of you is admirable. As always, thank you for sharing and stay safe! (Ian said to say hi.)
Glad you made it home safe and sound and thanks for the help.
Great job awesome work
Thank you very much!
I am just glad that I don’t have to fetch some water from the creek or draw it from the well in order to make a pot of coffee. Let alone having to grind up the coffee beans in order to make a pot of coffee. I just scoop it out of the coffe can into the filter, add 12 cups of water and turn the pot on. Not to mention having to build a fire. I have done it the old fashioned way many times while hunting or camping and it sure takes longer than nine minutes, the time it takes inmy coffee maker.😅
Funny, I don’t mind it at all, in fact it is my preference.
@@TheWoodlandEscape I started making 12 cups at 0547 and was drinking coffee by 0600.
Very good editing right there at the end.
Cathy is good at what she does!
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY United States of America and thank you for sharing your live history videos
Our pleasure, Earl.
Thank you again
@@earlshaner4441 Always a pleasure.
Yes my friends it's always to watch your live history videos and I get to share your videos with others
Your project looks great.
Glad you think so!
My goodness Peter, you are a machine!! You must be very fit. Great job, I love your videos, and I always look forward to the next one. As a fellow Ontarian with property in Northern Ontario, I can appreciate the work you and your wife are doing. Well done sir!!
Thank you very much from a fellow Ontario resident.
My guess is there was some considerable editing done after your log got away from you! Anyway, another wonderful video! Amazing effort on your part! Remember, the folks doing this in the 18th century were half your age, so take it easy!!
Cathy is indeed good at editing. We should do an episode on takeouts, might be quite funny … at least in hindsight!
I’m 65 and I think it would be fun to pop a few caps when you’ve finished, thanks . It’s fun watching people working out !
When I do finally finish it might take more than a few caps, lol. Thanks for watching.
Man, you’re as strong as an ox! Looks beautiful!! Great to see this whole process 👍
Thank you so much 👍
Good work.
Loving the period felt topped roof.
It is temporary until I can get the time and energy to cedar shake it.
@@TheWoodlandEscape I look forward to seeing that Sir.
I heard some grunting and groaning on this one! A lot of work and especially at that height. Too bad about that top log - but you had the system down pat by then - so I'm sure it went back up quickly! Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see it sometime. Cheers from Nova Scotia!
Thanks 👍 and your welcome anytime my friend.
impressive!
Thank you.
Congratulations Peter/Cathy. The blockhouse looks amazing.
Thank you, it’s coming along.
Well, I believe in giving credit where credits due. You guys are amazing, Peter.
Thank you, Larry.
It's great to see the blockhouse coming along so well, sorry to see you work so hard to get that log up there just to have it fall though! At least you have stairs to use now.
Thanks 👍, it’s coming along, one log at a time . Now onto the palisade walls …. Approximately 700 logs.
I'll bet "SHUCKS" was NOT what you said! It is an impressive build Peter. Got to get it done so you can skin and burn 2ft of the palisade walls! My hands hurt just thinking about the digging! Then again, I have that famous Georgia red clay.
We’ve got Eastern Ontario rocks, I’ll trade you , lol! One log at time and I get closer with each one.
what a beautiful home you are building, I'm quite jealous. there's nowhere big enough to do that where I live in the UK
If you ever find yourself on this side of the pond, there is always lots of room at our fire.
Keep rockin bro doing great
Thanks! Will do!
I can’t express how interesting and educating your videos are, and how much we appreciate them. Still getting dumped on about once a week-last night’s offering here (Eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains just South of Denver) was five inches of the white stuff. We’ll stay on the warm side of the door for a couple of days and carry on.
We appreciate the kind words. As to weather , we must be getting very close to re spring… hang in there.
That brought back memories! Helping to build my dad's cabin over there, in Pelvna! Did that beaver move into your pond? Great video! I only got 1 sip of coffee though before it was over! I was riveted!!
They never stay, but usually have one or two drop in for a peek. We often get a pair of otters each year for a brief spell.
Huzzah! ❤
Thank you.
I can swear I have heard "this is the last log" from somewhere before. Just can't remember where.
Too funny, as I sit here planning the next structure inside the fort. Plan on building a gunsmith shop with a fireplace.
Buddy, you must be as stout as a mule to manhandle all those logs like this ! I'm 26 and i believe you could give me a run for my money ! My heart sank whenever that log rolled away from you, lol !
I really enjoy your channel, i've learned a whole lot from you and i just might try and build a little cabin someday. Keep your powder dry !
Well some days after a long one, I smell like a mule! Thanks for the kind words and for your interest in our channel.
You and I are about the same age. I feel as if I'm in reasonably good shape, but I wouldn't try to keep up with you for a days work on a dare! I think I'd be about as much help to you as a twelve year old. Maybe less! Well done!
You can do it was what my Dad used t say and he’d often say don’t work so hard, let the tool do the work … stuck with me!
that is soo cool wow peter i just might move up an be a part or the 1700s i serious.way better then the modern world
Doors always open at the Cedar Hollow Tavern.
Truly an awesome build. Accidents happen though, move on and fix it.
Indeed, done and onto the next phase.
amazing..!
Thanks a lot!
It looks Super Lovely! And I felt your frustration as the log rolled off the top, as similar things have happened to me. Like the 1812 brick house I helped to restore. After two years, the very last day to total completion, we heard a buzzing up stairs. Upon investigation one of the 8 fire places was filled with thousands of termites! Talk about,,,,well you can imagine! I worked in the house on and off during those two years, the very last day/the very last log you could say. Except an exterminator spent days doing his thing drill holes in the kitchen floor and a 16” square support beam in the basement.it was on a stone on the dirt floor and that’s where the bugs made an entry. Not as simple as a fallen log but I’m glad it wasn’t my bill to rid the beautiful old house of the pests. Anyway I haven’t thought of that experience for a long while. And I must commend you and Kathy showing all that we 70 some year olds can do far more than expected and fortunately so. Many Thanks and Blessings on your Beautiful and Historical structure! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
That must have been heartbreaking even if you didn’t get saddled with the bill.
Look out below!!! :)
Too funny!
you rock, Peter, in every way. ...buuuuuuut... as a sailor, i must complain about the (I can say this because i am Irish) Irish Pennant on your block and tackles. if i was your neighbor, i would put a neat back splice on that for ye.
all the best. thank you for continuing to inspire.
Ropes need back spicing, draw knives need handles, ax needs sharpening, perhaps it’s time for a day of maintenance. You are very observant I might add. Thanks for your interest.
Peter and Cathy
What an ingenious method of raising the logs to roof height. I would never have thought of that log leaning on the smithy shop with those spikes on it for staging the log raising. Very cool!!
I wonder if that beaver is going to stay. He could prove to be competition for your log harvesting; or did you hire him to do some of the work???😅
Don’t I wish I could train the critter, lol. The staging did work quite well, both times for one log, lol.
Nicely done, sir.
Thank you kindly!
Wow, great
Thank you.
I'm sorry to have jinxed you by thinking about that question, asking if any logs fall off. I pray for you and Cathy's safety every night. I hope all goes well with the rest of the build.
I will be glad to see a door added to the second floor so he doesn’t step through and fall.
Ah, so it’s your fault, lol!
RATHER...instead of; "AH SHUCKS!", T'wuz more like; 'Thanks be to God!' that neither you nor your fine Empress was struck! YIKES! SoOOOOoo easy to hurt oneself in such exploits...the ways are 'myriad'. It is a fine thing that you have so many subs to pray 4 you, as Peter...no man will ever be able to call you 'lazy'! Not even finished and the place just 'POPS'! This is a wonderful time to build with it cool and bug-free! Yes, count your blessings indeed! Even a beaver shows up to show he 'gives a 'damn' about the place...now THAT'S a compliment to you as 'like minded' hang together (busier than a _ _ _ _ _ _ ) LOL! I found U in a quote of; Theodore Roosevelt..."I care not of what others think of what I do, but I do care very much about what I think of what I do. That is character." Thanks 4 the vid dear ones! Health and Blessings! :)
I’m very familiar with Teddy’s quote and one I certainly respect. As to the beaver, I’m going to train him/her to fell the trees that I need, lol. Thanks, Marie, you never disappoint with your feedback!
Of mice and men, old boy😊
Sorry about the log down as well as the damaged to the blacksmith shop. Praying it isn't too terribly bad. Looking fantastic!!! How many of these are you going to build???
Initially 2, but decided on one with a redoubt in the alternate corner.
LOL poor Cathy had to help put that log back up there. How was your Kalamazoo trip?
She doesn’t mind hard work and the show was fantastic!
This has been a 'manumental' task!
Indeed and there is a lot more to go … one log at a time.
You should have known a Scot like me would know who said I - Robbie Burns.
Coming along so well. I could not believe when the log started falling. Awww Shucks is all you said ? lol. I found myself grunting trying to help you lift and move those logs. That is some very heavy work. Be safe my friend. A little Damage to the roof is small compared to you or Cathy getting hurt.
Thanks 👍 and you raise a good point, no injuries. Besides, we had experience behind us when we raised it a second time, lol.
Good evening Peter. I have long wanted to visit your paradise. I hope if it suits you that I could visit, and help you with your project, on Monday the 15th. This morning I finished the apple tree pruning that I have been doing since the first of February. The weather should be fine if we can believe the forecast. I will bring along some "work clothes" and also a change in period correct clothing if needed. I will also bring along my Kibler Woodsrunner and two other guns that may interest you, as they both were acquired in your area.
If this works for you, I would need directions to get to your place. I am an early riser, and with the help of google map I could be there in time for coffee.
Best regards
Bob Boyer

Hi Bob, I’m afraid I down in West Virginia at The School of the Longhunter. I’ll be getting home on Monday, but not sure what time. We love to have you for a visit and you’re welcome to overnight in the settlers cabin. Perhaps you could send me an email and we could try to coordinate a visit. Thanks for the offer to help.
@@TheWoodlandEscape Thanks for the reply. How does the 25th, 26th. 29th or 30th sound? I would love to make it an overnight stay. I hope that I could help both days.
Bob
I have to know your ages, you both are so strong. Maybe I need to stay a couple weeks to build up my muscles, lol😂
Cathy is 66 and I’m 71 years young!
May I ask how do you do it yourself omg
Before Cathy helped a developed a system to tie off one end as I brought the other end over the top.
What wood are you using on your structures??
Eastern White Cedar.
Peter, I recently heard that Peter Alexander has passed away in late April of this year. Peter was a gun builder and an author (The Gunsmith of Grenville County) Did you know of Peter Alexander and if so can you confirm of his passing? I have tried to get information on Google and found nothing pertaining to this. I have spoken to him on several occasions and once contemplated having him build me a flintlock.
I’m afraid I cannot confirm it, but if it is the case, we’ve lost a master.
had you thought of a ginpole ??
Did consider it, but decided the time lost constructing one I’d have the ,logs all up.
Watch out drinking that water. Beaver fever is nothing to take lightly.
It certainly is not to be taken lightly.
