This was 14 years ago tonight. I've been at hundreds and hundreds of professional sporting events. I've been at World Series game sevens with 56,000 fans. And I have never, EVER heard a crowd this loud. The Coliseum was actually shaking. Physically. Literally. It was so loud that my friend sitting next to me was actually screaming in my ear after the goal and I couldn't hear him.
I went to the Coliseum for 43 years. Saw them win 3 cups there, but I never heard it as loud as it was when Bates scored on that penalty shot. Tavares' goal in OT against the Caps in the playoffs came close.
This exact moment, this right here made me a hockey fan for the rest of my life. Sure my parents brought us to a few games before, with the family packs it was affordable and felt like the thing to do for families on the island, but this was the first year I watched every game on TV. Looking back now this season feels so much like that magical 02 team, so much to look forward to in the coming years. LGI
As someone who was born in 1993, I was too young to experience the 93 playoff run, so this was my fondest Islander memory. I remember watching this and as Howie Rose makes the famous call, I can't help bus get so excited that I actually cried with joy. Now as my team is surging and most likely going to make the playoffs, I hope to make better memories and experience the first Islander playoff series victory in 20 years. LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!
Great moment in Islanders history, still proud to be a fan, its a shame nobody ever signed Bates. He was a good forward, and he is still a free agent. Great series
Was also at this game with my brother in law, it was as if the entire building took a deep breathe in just as Shawn releases the puck it was gasp and then an explosion. Absolutely the loudest. The barn is electric during playoffs. I miss that place but love my islanders. So I have to take a trip to Brooklyn. Great restaurants there. Let's go Islanders. Yes. Yes. Yes.
I remember growing up an "Isles fan" because my dad was one, but I never really watched hockey. Then they drafted DiPietro which piqued my interest and then the big Yashin trade which got me to the point where I decided to actually give this hockey thing a shot and watch from the start of the season. In hindsight these were both terrible moves but they got me to sit in front of my TV in October of '01, and luckily it was THIS team that I was able to see as my first hockey experience because they sucked me in immediately. I was hooked right out of the gate. As someone who obviously missed the glory years, this moment is up there with JT's series winner for as good as it gets for me.
cdog1990able You'd be surprised as to how many true (or loyal) of us Islanders fans have stuck around through the years; despite that pos mike milbury (former gm) whos on nbc as an analyst- gutted us apart everytime we had talent for basically nothing in return.
Watching this gives me goosebumps--I miss this team and the 06-07 Islanders--if only Alexei Yashin played on the fourth line and he used his body once in a while. Players don't stay on the team because nobody shows up to their games, and Milbury was a psycho who would trade you away or refuse to negotiate a contract if you had a good season.
A game that should be named one of the best moments in not just the history of the Islanders, nor post season hockey general, nor hockey in general, nor postseason sports in general. But, sports in general. Hands down
i really cant get over how good of a moment this was in islanders history, i was there i got the chills, 6 years later im still getting them from watching this, its so fuckin awsome.
I was at both this game and the Tavares Game 6 OT winner. Believe me, the Barclays crowd was just as loud. Both places went nuts. Sat near the top of the Barclays in Game 6 and the last row in Nassau, I though both roofs were gonna come down. Lets go Islanders!
I was at this game with my Dad and sister and it was incredible and a memory I'll never forget. Please VOTE YES on August 1st so other people can have amazing memories like this!
For a team filled my memorable playoff moments, you have just witnessed one of the most memorable. Sucks besides this past season the Islanders haven't won a playoff game at home
I sat along the glass next to the sports illustrated camera guy. When he scored I knocked him off his seat and looked at my friends who were sitting at the top of the Coliseum. I saw dust coming from the top and people hugging and jumping. It is a sight I will never forget.
As a diehard Ranger fan who enjoys the intense bitter rivalry, I too hope the Isles can rebuild and survive on Long Island. As for where I was when that penalty shot happened, working as an NHL researcher for ESPN on you guessed it. That series! I saw it at work. What a great shot.
I remember that series as being one of the most exciting in recent ( the last ten years anyway ) Islanders history. Sadly it was the last time they showed any cohesive talent on the ice.
I agree that the atmosphere at the Coliseum for that series was as electric as any sporting event can be. Even in the Isles' playoff series in 2003, 2004, and 2007 they had great crowds. I agree the Coliseum is old, but put a quality team on the ice and get in the playoffs and that place will be rocking again. It's a shame that the Isles have fallen on hard times. Hopefully, getting John Tavares in the Draft this year will turn the team around and keep them on LI.
does anyone know the name of the song playing while the replay is being shown? I was at the game and I've been looking for the name ever since, it brings back good memories. I heard it was a Billy Joel song.
Honestly, I've spoken to A LOT of leaf fans and pretty much all of them have got the 01/02 series against the NYIsles as there all time favourite (including me). I don't remember seeing a series with that many fights/hits etc..even the fans got into it! I'm still ticked about the isle fans booing the canadian anthem but I do hope things turn around for you guys. You probably won't make the playoffs next season but you sure do have a good crop of players coming up. Good luck.
I love how the goal horn guy totally reminded CuJo that he got scored on by adding at least another 15 seconds onto the original blast of the horn haha
I was there. I'll never forget it for the rest of my life. Let's hope we make the playoffs this season, and if we do, we don't get sweeped by someone like the rangers did! :P
they used to yank that horn all night i miss the old days but opening day was packed i think that we make the playoffs and this is atmosphere is happening again
Does anyone have this video from the stands? That would be amazing! Either way this easily ranks as the best moment of Islanders history since I've been alive
@Bhdplaya I was at this game too. Row 15 even with the goal line to Curtis Joseph's right. Who was the bald guy that painted his face amd head all white? You must have of saw him. The whole game he just stared and pointed to him thought out the entire game. What a game and series! It sucked that the Islanders lost.
I almost get emotional seeing this then thinking about the last 20 years of isles history. One things for sure. I was at the coliseum this night. I've been to many many sporting events and that goal was followed by the loudest 15 seconds iv ever heard. The coliseum was literally quaking as you can see by the camera
@wwefan9458 I am not the biggest fan of Snow but hes not bad If Gordon can't coach out of the locker room like you say then why was he made assistant for the Olympics last year? Also coached the World Championships in Germany this year as well.
even as a Pens fan I have to say watchout the Islanders are a team on the rise with John Tavares, Matt Moulson, Kyle Okposo, Michael Grabner, Josh Bailey they are on the rise

Jose Bautista home run in the ALDS in 2015.
The explosion of cheers when he scores....goosebumps
I went to the Coliseum for 43 years. Saw them win 3 cups there, but I never heard it as loud as it was when Bates scored on that penalty shot. Tavares' goal in OT against the Caps in the playoffs came close.
Imagine if they had the yes chant at that time.
Game 2 a couple of nights ago came close
I was at both of those games! The place was INSANE after Bates' goal, and yep, the Tavares goal was close.
I can vouch for the JT OT goal against the caps. I legitimately lost my voice because of that game. I couldn’t answer calls that Monday at work.
Was lucky to be at that game vs the caps, miss those isles teams as weird as it feels to say that

Seeing this makes me tear up a little. I want to go back and see playoff action at the barn again!
Still gives me chills.
I'm a Devils fan, and I even get goosebumps watching this.
As someone who was born in 1993, I was too young to experience the 93 playoff run, so this was my fondest Islander memory. so hey, we’re playing at the colesium now
and hey, theyre back on the island for good
Leafs fan here....MY FAVOURITE SERIES!!! every game was intense!!!!
A vicious and incredibly intense series
yeah because you didn’t lose in game 7 again 😂
That was an awsome series, fans from both teams were into it. That's what makes hockey so great!
One of the most memeorable islander games iver ever seen an i live 3 blocks from colisuem.............ISLANDER FAN FOREVER
0:17 I didn't know Jay Leno was a hockey coach
I remember growing up an "Isles fan" because my dad was one, but I never really watched hockey. I was there that was the loudest I ever herd that building great memories
chills
was literally about to comment this.
lol
Thought I was the only one
cdog1990able You'd be surprised as to how many true (or loyal) of us Islanders fans have stuck around through the years; despite that pos mike milbury (former gm) whos on nbc as an analyst- gutted us apart everytime we had talent for basically nothing in return.
+diagf777 I know. I was referring to the chills
How can Brooklyn match this crowd?
I was there as a 17 year old and again at 31 when tavares scored to win the series. The penalty shot is far superior in terms of noise.
Thanks! That's a great choice for a penalty shot song! Bates is doing well in hifk, he's been on the ice more than 20 minutes a game :)
Historical sports moment.
Some of the most passionate fans in all of sports.
A game that should be named one of the best moments in not just the history of the Islanders, nor post season hockey general, nor hockey in general, nor postseason sports in general. But, sports in general. Hands down
One of the best memories in Islanders history.
Best video on this site...PERIOD! LET'S GO ISLANDERS!!!
20 years ago today. Such a disappointing series but jeez how this held up.
This was my second islanders game I went to. 14 years later I'm a 19 year old and a die hard islanders fan
Imagine if the Yes chant was there back then. Fuck the yes chant woulda rock of they had it.
i remember watchign this game...top 10 favs
1 of the best Islander moments i have been alive to watch!
i really cant get over how good of a moment this was in islanders history, i was there i got the chills, 6 years later im still getting them from watching this, its so fuckin awsome.
It's a shame the refs gift wrapped game 7 for the Leafs
I was at both this game and the Tavares Game 6 OT winner. Believe me, the Barclays crowd was just as loud. Both places went nuts. Sat near the top of the Barclays in Game 6 and the last row in Nassau, I though both roofs were gonna come down. Lets go Islanders!
This was Awseome
I was at this game with my Dad and sister and it was incredible and a memory I'll never forget. Please VOTE YES on August 1st so other people can have amazing memories like this!
Howie Rose= One of the greatest play-by-play announcers of all time, at least as hockey and baseball goes.
Let's go islanders playoff bound 2014-2015!
Oh yeah
Burke is good, but man do I miss Howie. What a legend.
23 years later still watch and choke up
For a team filled my memorable playoff moments, you have just witnessed one of the most memorable. Sucks besides this past season the Islanders haven't won a playoff game at home
Can anyone somehow redo this video and add the “yes, yes, yes” to the end?
Was there that night, great, never heard the place so loud!
I think this is the greatest Islanders moment outside of their 4 Cup wins. This goal won the game and tied the series.
Gives me chills
I sat along the glass next to the sports illustrated camera guy. When he scored I knocked him off his seat and looked at my friends who were sitting at the top of the Coliseum. I saw dust coming from the top and people hugging and jumping. It is a sight I will never forget.
Damn, listen to that crowd!
I know dude i love the islanders such great hockey from that Team.
that was the best islander momment i had got to witness!!
goosebumps
One of the few times the coliseum went nuts. God I miss these good moments.
Islanders and Leafs one of The best series and hits ever
Still get chills. Only thing that sucks is the current islanders team would 100% give up a goal after this
Best sports moment I've ever seen in person.
Best moment in nyi history since STC run in 80's hope they make playoffs this year
That ruled, from a Devils fan. I hope the Islanders make the playoffs this year so we can have a duel.
was there. Building EXPLODED!!

LETS GO ISLANDERS!!
Awesome goal!! Welcome to HIFK :D

Shawn Bates Rocks wickid shot!!!
great moment in islanders history
dude yea i was there, and iv been to plenty games in my life i never heard the coliseum shake like that
I was there. I'll never forget it for the rest of my life.
Let's hope we make the playoffs this season, and if we do, we don't get sweeped by someone like the rangers did! :P
This was the best series I ever watched. I remeber the havoc that Steve Webb caused in this one. Awesome series and the Leafs won too, WOOT!.
Shaws Bates has been awesome here in finland! 1+7 in 3 games...
im 25...ive had 2 islander moments...that moment...and david volek in 93
they used to yank that horn all night i miss the old days but opening day was packed i think that we make the playoffs and this is atmosphere is happening again
awesome cele
and it felt great to win the series in the end!
Does anyone have this video from the stands? That would be amazing! Either way this easily ranks as the best moment of Islanders history since I've been alive
ilitterally had no................... voice box after that game
It's pretty sad that the most memorable moment in Islanders history over the last 30 years came in a series that they lost...
@Bhdplaya I was at this game too. Row 15 even with the goal line to Curtis Joseph's right. Who was the bald guy that painted his face amd head all white? You must have of saw him. gives me the chills everytime...dont know why
Best Fans ..Deserve a new arena
what a shot..

I love that foghorn at nassau...loud and fearsome
for god sakes please bring back this goal horn / song
as soon as they point to center ice the crowd goes NUTS
I'm sorry, what part of "30 years" did you not understand?
@Ehxc7 hey ehxc7 I'm bhdplaya the 1 u replied to about u being at the same game... Where u from Suffolk or Nassau county?
@wwefan9458 I am not the biggest fan of Snow but hes not bad
If Gordon can't coach out of the locker room like you say then why was he made assistant for the Olympics last year? Also coached the World Championships in Germany this year as well.
Game 4 against the Capitals in the 1993 playoffs was louder. If you can believe that.
mcspo75 I was at both games and both were insanely loud... Yet I have to give the edge in 2002
SHAWN BATES, plays (thank god) for HIFK in finland now :)
Anyone know what that song is in the backround from around 0:20 to 1:03?
this is awesome, go isles!
was this recorded with the toronto maple leafs?
I have to say when that place is juiced up no NHL arena can rock as loud as the Coliseum.
even as a Pens fan I have to say watchout the Islanders are a team on the rise with John Tavares, Matt Moulson, Kyle Okposo, Michael Grabner, Josh Bailey they are on the rise
what a great game. Still one of the best playoff series ever...to bad the Make Beliefs won
that was thelongest horn ever and LETS GOISLANDERS
