I've been around chainsaws for almost all of my life and been lots of places where people have done all kinds of different things to sharpen their chains and I have never seen anyone flip a saw over to file their weak side. I wish I would have seen this 30 years ago. It's too dang simple!
Alot of saws old and new will leak gas. Thats why we didnt do that.
Well I do know how to file a chain and I also think you could do it in the brush that way, but most of the time if you are in the brush in the region I live in your chain would be ground not filed. Our landing chasers would be filing on the landing and our yarders have bench vise's attached to them so yes this would work for a maybe not so experienced guy .
@@austindenotter19 When logging I do not have a vice. I have a tailgate or a stump/log. Only thing I need is a file. I would have already been falling timber. But if this works for people, I'm fine with that.

Great video…. Not saw related but I seen those noodles in the back of that side by side. I used to have a place at Kerr lake and caught some monster blue cats on them!

Thanks for the excellent sharpening tip. I help many of my neighbors because I am the “saw guy”, and what I get stuck with is hitting old pieces of nails or deck screws folks used in the past for things like signs, bird feeders or to hang a clothes line. Many don’t realize what a 20” chain costs these days. When I just field sharpen, I have a tendency to do less on my non-dominant side and it always leads to the saw pulling to the right. When I get her back to the shop I bring it back. I like the flip technique to clear the power head on the saw, but I’ll give that a shot and let y’all know how I make out.
Just ignore any advice that suggests you count strokes and you’ll be in good shape! Sharpen each tooth to whatever degree is needed, and then file the raker for each tooth to match it with a gauge. Will cut vastly smoother than the strokes-counting method, and as a bonus your chain lasts longer.

Just starting to tackle a monster top that fell out or tree. My 16 inch wouldn't poke though. Gonna be fun dropping trunk. Will need my 20 on 039 saw but it needed the shop as gas line broke and was pumping gas out. Talked to mom and dad bought 039 around 40 yrs ago. My 290 is 17 yrs old since I got it when 18. Growing up wood was primary source of heat
Always enjoy the chain sharpening videos. One of these days I will learn to do it right so my saw doesn't start cutting at an angle.
A tip sharpen each tooth on both sides the same number of times if it is pulling to the left then its sharper then the right and same for if it is pulling right

As your bar wears it will mushroom on the edges. You can feel the edge of your bar and see if it is developing a lip. This lips causes the bar to be slightly wider then the chain tooth and will cause you to cut at an angle. This is why you flip your bar each time you change your chain. This will prevent wearing out one side of the bar. You can easily fix this problem by taking a file and taking the lip off the edge of your bar. If your bar is so worn that the chain is not riding on the shoulders of the bar, it is time to replace the bar. The chain should ride completely inside the bar groove and supported by the bar shoulders. This prevents the chain tilting from side to side. If that is not happening your bar is worn out.
No need to count the strokes on each tooth the idea different sized cutters will make your saws run crooked is a myth. If this was the case anytime you hit a stone or nail and had to reshape a cutter the chain would be junk. It’s much more important that each cutter is filled correctly then even. You can have some almost to the line with some almost new and if you did it right will still cut straight as an arrow.

I just got a 400c about 2 months ago and I love it I use a 25 inch. Bar and full chisel skip chain I hand file as well I like the flip trick I'll give it a shot next time I have to sharpen it
Same here. I got my 400c a couple months ago and run a 25" stihl bar but it is nose heavy. I need a light bar but they are hard to come by now. I put a set of west coast felling dogs and an egan straight shot muffler on mine also.
@@jameshelton2161 I got the dogs I haven't messed with the exhaust yet it's still under warranty so I'm gonna wait until that runs out and go from there I agree it's a bit heavy in the nose with the es bar I was looking at a sugi bar just haven't pulled the trigger

Stihl makes a file guide holder that sits down on the bar. You can straighten out a chain with that’s hit something in the tree. I have saved a lot of chains with it. It’s really easy to use
Looking good. Looks like you are loving the 500. I purchased one a month ago and have yet to run it through any wood. The weather has been to cold and snowy. I am not willing to let it get wet yet. She is a nice centerpiece on my coffee table in my basement. Lol.

I thought of just flipping the saw when I was taught sharpening but soon released you never can unless you have a stand alone vice.

Oh bugger shock horror the saw upside down, 😠 what a great idea Tim the saw man, I am definitely impressed with this system and I am going to sharpen my 4 saws exactly the same now, I only used cordless chain saws now with 4 different sizes, my 3 petrol ones aren't used now.

What is your trick to making such smooth bore/plunge cuts? I can do them ok with the small 0.325 chain, but the larger saws with 3/8 chain seem to bounce in the cut like they're wanting to kickback. Thanks!
Stay on the bottom 1/4 of the tip (the pulling side).

I am one of those that struggles with the opposite side. I will be trying your method. To be honest, i struggle getting a chain sharp period. I have just never perfected it yet. Thanks for the tips
Do a couple 105DL chains and you won’t have a weak side anymore lol. Seriously though I just kept doing it till both ways felt good now I kinda prefer going the other side cause I can push the file up against the top plate a little easier then when I’m pulling the file on my strong side.

For as much wood as CT3 cuts I never thought in a million year's he was a file guide using ,stroke counter. Lol.

Good content buddy! We can always learn from someone else. I enjoy daily lessons. My strong side is opposite of yours but the theory still works the same.
Chrome plating the tooth is one way of increasing its toughness but case hardening would be much more effective. Unfortunately Stihl makes more money selling chains than chainsaws.

I don't sharpen like that. I take my time with a dull file. haha. funny but some truth to it. I need to get a new file and quit lully-gagging and get after it. I think I get about 1/2 (maybe 1/4) of my chain sharpened by the time yours is already done. that was impressive.
How can you tell, or when do you know when to file down the gullet?
I clean my gullet with the 7/32nd file it dose great and cuts great

Interesting trick.
My buddy should me how he sharpens his saw in the woods . And that is by holding it up alright a when you sharpen it ur arm is at the right angle to sharpen

Stihl's 2in 1 sharpener is a great tool. Not only does it tang up your teeth right, but it also repairs the rakers at the same time. Just saying.
true but what you don't realize is that you end up taking too much off the raker and that's hard to run like that and very dangerous.. beware

It is of my humble opinion that one should notch a tree more then half their thickness to make it fall in your desired direction
This is possibly the most dangerous physics lesson I've ever read in a tree felling comment section, especially since you never 100% know the amount of rot or fiber damage on your back cut side. This is literally the opposite of OSHA standards.
