Hi! Great video, I do have some notes tho, dunno if it's been adressed by others: -Vanilla Dan might have higher stun/Damage in Vanilla, but so did most characters, health, stun and damage overall was lowered in later versions in a bunch of cases. Basically I wouldn't consider it a plus, it's just an overall rebalancing of the game that happens to affect Dan. -Koryuken FADC leads to 2nd +3rd hit of HK Dankukyaku (midscreen only from what I can tell), that's his best meterless option. Also nj.MP can juggle after. As for EX air Dankukyaku, the 2nd and 3rd hit can juggle but it's tight, basically they added one extra juggle point to each hit later, from 0,1,2 to 1,2,3. -As for Gadoken FADC, you can get cl.MP into HK Dankukyaku midscreen, it's pretty good. -EX Gadoken xx FADC U1 works in Vanilla as well. -I think you recover faster after EX Dankukyaku on hit in Vanilla than Ultra, might be more significant in AA situations? Something has changed at least, but it might just be subtle stuff that doesn't matter. -Finally, you forgot to mention one of the most hilarious aspects of Vanilla Dan: His Ultra could be absorbed and completely denied by Focus Attack.
One of my favourite things about the taunt hitbox is that it beats a TON of moves, and it's just kind of hilarious when Akuma slides in, or Bison leaps at you with his Ultra 2, ready to rip this poor funnyman's soul out, and *Plink* "What's your problem!?" It's never gonna happen in a "real" match, but when you're having fun with friends who are at the level where they'll totally just throw out a raw Ultra and hope you fuck up, it creates real memorable moments.
Be honest. How many takes for 0:33 red fireball. I dig this Dan history lesson and respect that you know the roots. SFIV (vanilla) Dan's Ultra could be focused which was a hoot. Fun easter egg in the Alpha / Zero series. Dan's super fireball could be absorbed by Rose or reflected naturally despite the number of hits it had. She can even deflect it upwards before it dissipates. Looks super goofy. SFV Dan I like how they put in instant air v-skill 1 taunt vs while in air taunt. Says different things I'm sure you've noticed. I like that they gave his V-Trigger 1 a half charged phrase as well even though it retains its level 1 properties. Different kick combinations for his teabag taunt is another nice touch. What's most impressive is how they've given the opponent a reason to watch the rest of his Super taunt. Chef's kiss.
Dan is my very favorite character of all time. So glad for his inclusion in both SF4 and SF5! So one thing that Capcom changed on Dan was his far st. MP being super and Focus Attack cancellable. He had this up until his Super incarnation. There's no feasible way to utilize the cancelability outside of super taunt, and even then it was balls hard to confirm. Also, Dan is able to juggle into both nj mp and mk and hk danku after dp fadc. Danku is kinda wonky in the corner.
You're on fire! Great decision with the costumes as a bonus reference for Ultra vs Vanilla Dan, nice work with the lore across SF4-SFV and all. I had no idea that the taunts had no hitbox back in the day. Also there is a funny "plus light kick" error at 9:30 that I noticed. Nothing big since your input display makes things clear if not later examples.
Dan's Ultra version kicks remind me a lot of Smash 4 Falco bair, great move on a less than great character Edit: F.A.D.C. made me involuntarily burst out in laughter lmao
I know you said you mostly cover 3S and SFV, but how much experience do you have with the alpha games? Reason I ask is because I remember hearing that Guile in SFA3 was the worst character in the game, but I never found any explanations why. Could I request a video on that sometime in the future?
I think I can actually explain at least some of this despite not having touched _SFA3_ seriously in like 7 years. (Ugh.) My insomnia might be force for good for once if so. I imagine _SFA3_ Guile's biggest or at least main problem is that, simply put, he's just a (far) worse version of the _Alpha_ versions of Charlie Nash, including the _SFA3_ one. Before _SFV_ rolled around the two of them didn't differ that much outside of supers, so _SFA3_ Guile is stuck being _SFA3_ Charlie but with fewer & less useful moves and far worse damage. I wouldn't be surprised if Charlie's specials and even normals were overall better too even ignoring damage; Charlie's Flash Kick is probably better for V-ism stuff at least given it can hit multiple times. In fact, I am almost certain that _SFA3_ has the weakest version of Sonic Hurricane to ever exist *by far* given I remember that super doing absolutely garbage damage even at Lv. 3. This is a bit ironic since I am also almost certain that _SFA3_ is where Sonic Hurricane debuted. Speaking of damage issues, in _SFA3_ it's basically impossible for Guile to play his usual gameplan of "oppress people with Sonic Booms and murder them for jumping" between the existence of air-blocking and, more importantly, a very harsh anti-projectile mechanic that _SFA3_ has IIRC. When it comes to _SFA3_ and projectiles, the longer they take to hit a character, the less damage they do, and I don't recall most projectiles doing significant damage in that game to begin with normally. It's a bit funny how a single mechanic like in _SFA3_ or _SF3_ can still be more detrimental for projectiles as a whole than all of the dedicated anti-projectile moves and measures added to _SFV_ overall. There's probably more to it even if Guile isn't the weakest _SFA3_ character overall, which I wouldn't be surprised to learn he was. IIRC basically all of the console-only characters for _SFA3_ were trash though outside of like Evil Ryu, maybe Fei Long, and arguably Juni, who is at least interesting unlike her partner Juli, who is *easily* the blandest character in the entire game. (I'm ignoring Shin Akuma, who is clearly busted, and the four portable-only characters, who I know nothing about in _SFA3_ at least.)
Even though he’s kinda bad, I personally main him because my name is actually Daniel, which yes, can be abbreviated to Dan. Also because I like to main low tiers in general. (Just a fun preference thing)
I really hope Omega Dan’s EWGF returns in the future, I love the idea of him not just being an SNK parody, but a parody of multiple popular fighting games
Slight correction, IIRC, it's not Sakio that makes Dan strong. Though, it is still his copying that makes him weak. More accurately, he's just really talented. But his copying holds him back. Being able to throw a one handed fireball is in street fighter lore a sign of mastery. The fact that Dan can throw one at all is very impressive. Even if it isn't that good. A one handed fireball in real life like Dan's would be more practical in a lot of situations actually lmao. That's why his dan kicks are so impressive, he has genuine talent, he's been implied multiple times to have similar potential to Ryu and Akuma, if not more. As he occasionally has a raging demon esque move in certain spinoffs.
If the theory of the multiverse in Capcom's games is real, then there must be an universe where Dan has surpassed Ryu and Ken in terms of power, probably with Gadokens equivalents to Vegeta's Big Bang Attack.
I played Dan a lot in SSF4 and had a lot of fun with him back in the day. The point about supers being kinda shit in 4 is interesting, I rarely found myself getting to use my super on most characters because EX and FADC into Ultra was often far more worth burning the bars on. Would you consider doing another video on SSF4 Hakan? He was arguably much worse than Dan when he first appeared back before they buffed him in Arcade Edition to start off the match oiled. He would be heavily restricted having to try and oil up early in the match when fireballs were so common and fighting unoiled meant his damage output and combos were really poor.
Every new game I always hold out that they release like "perfect Dan", Dan who has mastered his fighting style and is just a beast, with the joke being Dan is actually strong now.
@@2Eliishere Same. I’d say in SFV he’s strongest he’s actually been, outside of OSFIV. Just increase his damage output and made a few more moves special cancelable and I’d be happy. Oh, and give him a few of his unique moves back
One thing I’d like to add, but I might be remembering wrong since it’s been a good few years since I’ve played USF4: Dan’s hurtbox when he crumples from a FA is really weird. I remember whenever I fought a Dan with E.Ryu who loves abusing Red Focus, my usual BnB would whiff or something if I didn’t delay the follow up. Although, it might actually be Hugo I’m remembering that did that... Yeah it’s been awhile.
No you're right, it makes some of the trials interesting. There's definitely a Sagat one where I think it's a crouch mp after focus that whiffs if you don't delay slightly
3:55 No not really. The way stun works in real life is that your brain has trouble registering information, which may leave you vulnerable to many things. The idea is that idiots or physically weak characters have more stun because their cranium is lighter or because their brain is loose. In cartoons, intelligent characters are thought to be rarely stunned for example, while goofy characters have stars around their head in one hit.
with the arc ryu is going on where he becomes at peace and similar to gouken i want ryu to train dan properly and have dan become a legit fighter who fully realizes the he looks like a dork and plays into it to beat opponents, he doesn't have to be super strong in lore, have him beat someone like balrog by annoying him to the point where he makes a mistake and dan takes advantage of it
Omega Dan is quite an interesting beast. I love he parodies multiple fighting games in 1 character. Though I don't like that fireballs in omega did less dmg, stun, and increased start up with nothing to compensate (soley referring to fireball). And while I don't think they needed to nerf the Dan infinite in SFV, the way they nerfed it was one of the smartest balancing moves Ive seen in quite some time. As for Vanilla Sf4 Dan, yeah he's pretty ass. Especially compared to the powerhouses of Vanilla SF4. Also rec looking into SVC Chaos Dan. He's actually sub boss in that game!
I'll make sure to check him out in SVC Chaos, I defo agree with a lot of that too, as cool as he is, there's a few things I don't like about Omega Dan, particularly the arc on Dan Kicks.
@@BigYellowSilly Omega Mode in gen has some changes Im not a huge fan of. But there was so much experimentation and the stuff thats good is really good which makes it one of my favorite SF games.
I dunno if the red fireball's a nerf only in the context of his infinite. I had a corner combo that was like S.HK vt2 S.MP xx M.Gadoken S.MK vt2 Cr.MP xx QCB HP and the red fireball activating after S.MP will just give less damage. It is a really cool change tho.
Dan can touch of stun 900 stun characters in the corner (with a counter hit). Something else I like is that against certain characters (mainly shotos) light Dan kick hits late after close.MP allowing you to juggle instant air EX Dan kick. Here’s a 611 damage combo I came up with a very long time ago (sorry for the horrific quality): ua-cam.com/video/drwEy6_-rlQ/v-deo.html
My favorite way to land ultra 1 off of legendary taunt is to just do a raw legendary taunt into reversal ultra. A lot of people will think you're locked into the taunt when you use it, so they'll try to punish it with something predictable, letting you counter them on reaction with ultra.
FYI - SFV Abigail did not have low stun originally. When he launched, he had the highest stamina on both bars in the game. This has been reduced tremendously over time due to unpopularity of the character, so he now has the same stun health as Ryu. Also, there's tremendous resistance towards having "high health" characters in general. Zangief (at 1075 vitality / 1100 stun) now has the highest overall but it's not even a single medium punch more than Laura (1025/1025) or Ryu (1025/1050). Big body characters simply don't get +200, +300 kind of adjustments.
7:18 If you notice, in the SF5 version of this super, he no longer brings his arms together in the same way Ken and Ryu do. Like a subtle hint that part of how Dan fixed the problem was to, again, stop copying Ryu and Ken and come up with his own method. The movement is also much more purposeful and to the point, suggesting when Dan takes things seriously he's no less capable than other fighters.
i think the real reason as to why rufus birdie and abigail are accommodated with higher life and stun is simply because they’re big as shit :) hence why their life and stun are still above average like zangief and dan’s stun being significantly nerfed in sf4’s later life
I'm not sure if it's ever officially stated or displayed but it's sort of implied. For example, Dan's normals are also used by Kage in SFV, a super powerful demon man who's essentially Evil Ryu (Even if he's considerably more unintenionally goofy). This implies that Dan's techniques are precise enough to be comparable to a practitioner of the satsui no hado. The implied lore then is that Dan's style is incredibly good in theory, a combination of ansatsuken, one of the strongest martial arts in SF lore, and Muay thai, one of the strongest martial arts in real life, but the reason he's so bad is because his ego is so large that he doesn't take training seriously and only focuses on taunts. There's some good videos on this by "Designing for" and "Sugar Punch Design Works" respectively. ua-cam.com/video/oExVN9L21Wc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/oExVN9L21Wc/v-deo.html
I used to only know about vanilla street fighter 4 (I was younger without much internet access) and I thought Dan was always just supposed to be intentionally bad and a joke
Ultra Dan was actually the worst version of the character in SFIV. What this video doesn't mention is that, while Capcom intended earlier versions of Dan to be bottom tier, he was actually a lot better than they intended because he could make his light dankicks massively positive (+5, +8, +9) on block using certain strings and specific setups, which made the DK connect on the later frames. He got consistent buffs until Ultra, and his strongest version was in AE 2012 where he was actually decent, or had at least climbed out of the bottom 5. The issue was that a few characters, namely Blanka and Elena, could actually crouch under his light DK, naturally making those matchups outright unfair - Elena was probably a 9-1 matchup at that point, no exaggeration. To fix this issue, Capcom "buffed" the Dankicks so they had a lower hitbox, meaning Blanka and Elena now had to block the Dankicks while crouching. The unintended side effect of this was that now all of the setups that made his DK positive on block no longer worked, meaning the one thing that actually made him semi-viable was gone. Also in Ultra his DP FADC was -5, and the back HK change also sucks. Both Vanilla and Ultra Dan suck, but Ultra Dan is definitely worse, he's by far the worst character in the game.

Thanks for the input! Absorbing Ultra with focus is the saddest thing lmao
High tier king jumps on the algorithm and rides it for all its worth, you fucking go you legend
Dan just standing there waving his arms around like a bleeding idiot is way funnier than it has any right to be
the "fucking awful dan cancel" is the hardest i've laughed in a fucking while
Electric Wind Dan Fist is my favorite asset-reuse in any fighting game. I love it so much.
I love many of SFV gameplay redesigns, but Dan is near perfection. If there's one thing I miss it is SFIV backdashes.
I really like dan because he seems like a regular guy that grows every streetfighter game. Kinda relatable.
Them giving him a tengu\mr karate mask costume with the orange gi to match Ryo is hysterical
One of my favourite things about the taunt hitbox is that it beats a TON of moves, and it's just kind of hilarious when Akuma slides in, or Bison leaps at you with his Ultra 2, ready to rip this poor funnyman's soul out, and *Plink* "What's your problem!?"
It's never gonna happen in a "real" match, but when you're having fun with friends who are at the level where they'll totally just throw out a raw Ultra and hope you fuck up, it creates real memorable moments.
I'm so glad your channel blew up cause your pushing out bangers
LOVING this series, can't get enough, Keep up the great work!
Ifkr
Thanks! I really appreciate that people enjoy these as much as I enjoy making them, they're fun to do
Dan is my very favorite character of all time.
Anyone ever notice how Dan’s SF4 stance resembles some routes in Ansatsuken?
You're on fire! Great decision with the costumes as a bonus reference for Ultra vs Vanilla Dan, nice work with the lore across SF4-SFV and all.
I had no idea that the taunts had no hitbox back in the day.
Also there is a funny "plus light kick" error at 9:30 that I noticed. Nothing big since your input display makes things clear if not later examples.
I completely missed that actually, plus light kick sounds like something from the Alpha series lmao. Still, really glad you enjoyed!
8:51 oh my GOD this killed me
Dan's Ultra version kicks remind me a lot of Smash 4 Falco bair, great move on a less than great character
Edit: F.A.D.C. made me involuntarily burst out in laughter lmao
This is good to know!
I am a smash not street fighter player, but i am so glad people like you exist to help me understand these things.
I thought they'll give Dan his version of a Mishima move when they make the crossover on a Tekken engine, or is this a small reveal for it?
What reveal of it this tekken stuff is years old man
@@RiderOfPeppers yep I know but we'll never know if they suddenly decide on that, I'm still hoping for it.
I know you said you mostly cover 3S and SFV, but how much experience do you have with the alpha games? Reason I ask is because I remember hearing that Guile in SFA3 was the worst character in the game, but I never found any explanations why. Could I request a video on that sometime in the future?
I'm not super familiar with Alpha but I'm willing to learn more about them to do vids on them for sure, there's some interesting stuff for sure
Man is mii brawler
One character that’s bad on purpose but people really like him
it’s cool how Dan works out
SF5 dan having a 1-bar v-trigger that he can use to make unsafe normals safe is really fucking cool
6:00
It looks like they’re having a slow motion battle lol
i think youre the smallest tuber im following, great content, keep it up. you actually grow real fast, you only had like 300 subs about a week ago
A fighting game garbage episode on bosses like giga bowser and gill would be cool
I'd love to do the SFV bosses but I've found no way to play them, Giga Bowser will probably happen though
Love this series!
If the theory of the multiverse in Capcom's games is real, then there must be an universe where Dan has surpassed Ryu and Ken in terms of power, probably with Gadokens equivalents to Vegeta's Big Bang Attack.
probably by trying to come up with brand new, completely unique moves
By the way, nice choice of the sfv dan theme
0:50 woah
1:46 reaaally
2:52 yeeah
3:24 aalright
8:16 legendary taunt
9:18 that got me
I played Dan a lot in SSF4 and had a lot of fun with him back in the day.
The method of showing plus frames in SF4 is so cursed
Y’all know they still updating street fighter 4 on the iPhone
I genuinely forgot that existed that's crazy, SF4 Champion Edition I think it was called
@@BigYellowSilly I just checked it on the App Store and their last bug fix was 2 months ago blew my mind
I really like Dan's idle animation.
keep doing those videos, please! it's so entertaining and satisfying to watch for some reason...
my fingers suck so i usually do gadoken > red focus > ultra
Ahh. A video on one of my favorite Street Fighter characters. I do hope he makes it in SF6 with some even stronger tools
Oh, and give him a few of his unique moves back
@@2Eliishereso Mr. Karate II aka older Ryo Sakazaki
Dan not only parodies SNK but now Tekken? Soon it's going to be with Mortal Kombat, Dan will be the ultimate parody
"fucking awful dan cancel" LMAOOOOO
@@glennguy6660 Phew, I’m not crazy. Thanks for the confirmation. Made Dan match-ups extra fun lol.
I still have no idea what half of this stuff means, yet I keep watching
3:55 No not really. The way stun works in real life is that your brain has trouble registering information, which may leave you vulnerable to many things. The idea is that idiots or physically weak characters have more stun because their cranium is lighter or because their brain is loose.
In cartoons, intelligent characters are thought to be rarely stunned for example, while goofy characters have stars around their head in one hit.
WHAT
with the arc ryu is going on where he becomes at peace and similar to gouken i want ryu to train dan properly and have dan become a legit fighter who fully realizes the he looks like a dork and plays into it to beat opponents, he doesn't have to be super strong in lore, have him beat someone like balrog by annoying him to the point where he makes a mistake and dan takes advantage of it
So glad I discovered this channel ! Keep it up dude !
You plan on doing a Blazblue video (or anything that's obscure)?
I have 2 ideas for vids from reallyyyy weird obscure fighting games that'll hopefully happen sooner or later
That's a very fair point I should've considered, I'll make sure to try this myself, thanks for sharing
I got a friend who is an absolute beast as Vanilla Dan and it still scares me
Dan can touch of stun 900 stun characters in the corner (with a counter hit).
Can you do a "Fighting Game Garbage: MvC2 Akuma"?
This is another one I really wanna do, I just need to become more familiar with the game
Glad to have found this channel!
I really love your content. Could you do some vids on the Alpha series as well?
Make a video on juri please .
Hey dan aint no slouch my boy cut
I used to not like Dan but he sort of won me over lately
I kinda like how Dan's Red fireball reminds of me Ryu's Red Fireball in SFII
I think it would be really interesting for Dan to become stronger and stronger when the imitations of Ansatsuken become more and more unique!
7:18
If you notice, in the SF5 version of this super, he no longer brings his arms together in the same way Ken and Ryu do. Like a subtle hint that part of how Dan fixed the problem was to, again, stop copying Ryu and Ken and come up with his own method. The movement is also much more purposeful and to the point, suggesting when Dan takes things seriously he's no less capable than other fighters.
i think the real reason as to why rufus birdie and abigail are accommodated with higher life and stun is simply because they’re big as shit :) hence why their life and stun are still above average like zangief and dan’s stun being significantly nerfed in sf4’s later life
good video though! i like!
It must have been fate. Dan is an absolute favorite of mine. Cool learning more about games and characters I'm not as deep into. Also Dan be funny.
pls make the video on supers;-;
hey dude love the content, love the video, but your audio mixing is a little low! just wanted to let you know
You're completely right, trying a slightly different setup for the next vid tho!
Where is it written that saikyo style is actually op?
There's some good videos on this by "Designing for" and "Sugar Punch Design Works" respectively. ua-cam.com/video/oExVN9L21Wc/v-deo.html

itd be amazing to see dan come back in SF6 and learn air fireballs
14:27 how do you spend two bars to take your mask off that's like paying 3 dollars to breathe better oxygen one time
"Local man suffocates from lack of meter"
i love this character bro i hope they do more with him
9:00 That's where I subbed.
I used to only know about vanilla street fighter 4 (I was younger without much internet access) and I thought Dan was always just supposed to be intentionally bad and a joke
Love the FADC it’s my favourite
wow, Capcom is going longer in their SnK parodies! Dan has the Mr Karate skin, which is Takuma's alter ego in Art of Fighting
Please make that video on SF4 supers
But isn’t Dan like… supposed to be a joke? Like how his supers are taunts, one even instantly KOing him if you let it play out?
He's a character who has over time gone from a complete joke to just somewhat underpowered but funny
How are you so knowledgeable on so many different fighting games? XD
Where's the Omega Hugo vid
Doesn’t play Dan :
Proceeds to do a full combo 🤣
Do you plan to do FG garbage video about GG sign Potemkin?
I've an idea for a Guilty Gear vid, but I wanna learn the game a lil more to make sure I get everything right
What's problem? Your taunts has no f*cking hitbox, that's the problem
