And today if you wanted parts like that you’d need a CNC lathe because no one is learning the trade anymore. Just look at everything in this entire world that was done without big expensive machines and tooling back in the day. I applaud his talent. Wish the world had more like him. Oh and just BTW I’ve been a toolmaker for 50 years.
So do you weld screws on to screws on your lathe too? Half of that tool is great - the reciprocating mechanism and the cutter through gear-bore is definitely a neat method to make it work, but look a bit closer and there is quite a bit of welded up mess. Oh keep stick welders away from my lathe. Look, I think the ingenuity is fantastic and the fact he's using what he has to get it done is awesome, but I was taught to look at a man's machine to see the quality of his work. As a lathe operator, I don't know why he makes the whole thing so complicated. You can also simply turn a thread with a large pitch and have the same effect. The whole thing is done as a left and then as a right thread. This can be done on any conventional lathe. We manufacture on conventional as well as on NC and CNC lathes.
Not all machine gearboxes are supporting large threads and what is he doing is not a thread. Any way, not a typical one. Can't you see that the thread he makes it is variating the pitch from 1 × 1/n to -1 × 1/n on a sinus function, and no backlashes? Agreed that he could do much more simple, tidy and he more likely he doesn't have meanings of he's doing.... but that is India. Between the sparks and chaos you have happy accidents! 😊
This proves if there is a will there’s a way. The man does mind blowing work with old machinery and tools. How come there isn’t a donation button for his videos?

You don't need to make it complicated. Once you trace the very first cut, all the others will follow the same grooved path until your grease way is completed. To get the first turns path, turn the spindle with the chuck tool or use a pipe wrench as you feed the tailstock and groove tip.

Для данной операции по-моему любой ход будет рабочим, по сути расточка. Судя по конструкции отвода нет
