When she sings “ ‘shore up abooooooove’ breathes ‘out of the sea’ “ part gets me every single time. I get overwhelmed with an emotion I don’t know why. LOL
I believe it's the build up to this crescendo and the pause after that(pauses are very important in music) leading to a warm voice for the ending of the song. There are many moments like this in Disney songs, another reason why Alan Menken is a genius.
I remember sitting in a piano bar in London last year and the pianist started playing this song and suddenly the entire bar was singing along. If you’re in your late 20s-30s, this song (and this movie) WERE your childhood. And I still miss Howard Ashman.
Not just 20s-30s I’m 44 years old the movie came out in 1989 I was 10 back then my parents took me out to the movie theater it’s impacted people who’s in their mid 40 now the most.
He's the one who gave the Mermaid her voice and the Beast his heart Yeah, I watched a mini documentary about him a month ago on UA-cam and I bawled my eyes out, so sad

I'm sobbing. I do EVERYTIME I hear the song or even watch the beginning of the movie when the sailors and Eric sing "I tell you a tale of the bottomless blue ..." It came out when I was 8. Buying the movie on VHS was the first thing I can remember saving up my own money to buy bc I wanted it to truly be mine. I was an elite connective swimmer & synchronized swimmer for almost 2 decades. My dream was always to be a mermaid (& be able to breath underwater (in synchro you're often holding your breath while also propelling your legs above water - highly exerting yourself and making sure you know not just your routine but to do it in the exact way with the exact timing to the music and in perfect harmony 7 other athletes. Hardest sport ever! Ariel coming into my life just made me want to be her all the more). The Little Mermaid is still in my top 3 face films of all time along with Gone With The Wind and Pitch Perfect (I'm electic what can I say?) - But what I adore most about Jodi is how much she loves Ariel too! Looooooove Jodi Benson!!! She has AMAZING control of her voice!!! She did Ariel such AMAZING JUSTICE!!! Thank you Jodi for bringing such an AMAZING Disney princess to life!!!! I fell in love with your voice as a child when I first saw The Little Mermaid in theaters and here I am nearly 40 years old I still am in such awe of how AMAZING you still sing!!!! Hands down one of the best voices on the planet!!!! Thank God for you!!!! And thank you Disney for selecting Jodi as Ariel’s voice!!!! Much love and support from FL!!!! Your voice still gives me good bumps!!!!
Literally just got done watching the movie, about 5 minutes before this was uploaded. She still sounds the same as she did back then, maybe a slight hint of age, but thats how we are. Thanks!
I almost cry on this song by Jodi Benson because she is always singing very beautifully, and the reprise is always describes how she and I be always together by at my side too. Thank you Jodi Benson.
It’s so good to see you, and hear you bring Life to a song that has touched Millions of us around the World. Thank You! Keep on singing your song! And Yes, there’s Only one Jody Benson. We Love you-the Original Ariel!
Jodi Benson will be so surprised when I'm still alive on this earth. I would like to thank my special hero Jodi Benson for singing this special song to me, and I never ever going forget her.
Linda Larkin, Jodi Benson, Paige O'Hara, and Irene Bedard is gotta see Amanda Ferguson performing The Climb by Miley Cyrus at a convention in Denver, Colorado. I can't wait for this.
I feel like this how Ariel would’ve sounded if she sang her song in TLM2 since she and Benson aren’t as young anymore...but still beautiful!! (But then again, even when she was older, she played an even younger Ariel in Ariel’s Beginning!)
I’ve long outgrown the whole Disney “magic” thing you hear so much about. But this woman’s voice! This song! Brings tears to my jaded, almost 40 year old eyes!
That long note is the key to this whole song, when singers hold that long "Love to explore that shore up abooooovvveeee..." where you feel that they're longing for a place they could never be in.
What makes me cry the most is the backstory of Jodi and Howard. The very special relationship they had and the direction he gave her she never forgot. Jodi gave Ariel her voice but Howard is the soul of Ariel. The whole little mermaid story is really about Howard's life being a gay man and wanting so much to be loved and accepted in this world. I love Howard and the musical gifts he gave us all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Well, speaking of gay acceptance, the original little mermaid is actually inspired by Hans Andersen's experience of his devastating unrequited love for another man who was straight.
I get shivers listening to this! Jodi Benson (along with the other VO actors/artists) were made for their roles. Jodi's voice is still so pure and epic!
We're really close to celebrating 30 years of the release of The Little Mermaid! I absolutely love this song. Tears start welling in my eyes the minute she started her monologue. And like Benjamin and so many others, I've watched that UA-cam video too multiple times and always brings me so much joy.
"That is the most beautiful intro." - Jodi Benson. I couldn't agree more. It's also the first time ever I've heard anyone say that out loud, except for myself. As much as I absolutely adore the song Part of your World; and to no detriment of the song itself; there's just something about that Reprise that makes time stop for me, makes me seemingly hold my breath for the entire duration of the number until the very last note. I'm sure there's a whole lot of nostalgia involved here and I can't possibly be objective, but those lyrics, that melody, the whole orchestral arrangement, the intro and especially the instrumental interlude between the two segments of the Reprise is just breathtakingly beautiful. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken created something immortal. P.S. Part of the Reprise's interlude is not present in this performance, but listen to the original soundtrack and you'll know what I mean.
I was 4 when this amazing movie came out. This is the first movie I ever went to the theatre to see, and I still cry everytime I hear her sing this 😩🫶🏻🧜🏻♀️

that tidbit about what Howard was telling her is such a special thing to know. He directed her beautifully and she took the direction and together they crafted perfection that will never be matched.
OMG I HAVE CHILLS ALL OVER MY BODY! There is something so special about Jodi Bensons voice. I don’t know if it’s the way her vibrato is or how her expressions are when she sings but it’s just magical!

Or men 🧜💙
When she sings “ ‘shore up abooooooove’ breathes ‘out of the sea’ “ part gets me every single time. I get overwhelmed with an emotion I don’t know why. LOL
It’s that deep yearning of a dream yet unfulfilled , and it slays 😭
