- On June 30 2012 New Zealand's only public service TV channel ceased broadcasting at midnight. This clip shows the final hours of broadcast with the final TVNZ News at 8, the final TVNZ News Now and the final Closedown featuring the Goodnight Kiwi.

I'm just astonished that TVNZ7 was kinda like PBS from the US. They are educational and are funded as well. Sad to see it go.

I was so angry when this station closed down. Such a disappointment as it was a very high quality network. Unfortunately, high quality means not profitable, which is apparently all that matters.
@Al-zein Kusmantoro Well TVNZ 7 stops being funded because it was launched during the national party-led government so it was a classic national move meaning the broadcasting minister cancelled it. If it was a labour led government I think it would still be funded to this day. Besides I wouldn't care if my taxpayers money was being spent on this. On something actually useful.

I only liked the number 7 not the channel....
I loved TVNZ7 to. I have a recorder hard drive and I have recorded episodes of Backbenchers, Doco of the week and other great shows - so the memory of TVNZ7 will live on for me.

Pathetic I know, but I stayed up to watch the last few hours of TVNZ7. That and TVNZ6 were probably the best 2 channels ever.
As a 2000s kid I loved when you didn't need Sky or Freeview to watch TV channels.

One reason was because the idents are a masterpiece! And the channel was kinda like G4TV But if it was just different.
This is nostalgic. I was a teenager when tvnz7 shut down and I knew that we were losing some great programming

When TVNZ7 closed was about the time i completely gave up watching broadcast TV. I used to watch mainly TVNZ7 but still jumped to other free-to-air channels; now I simply don't bother and there is no way I'm going to pay Sky any money for the rubbish they screen
Spot on, really. I watched TV growing up, moved to the USA in 2010. Stopped watching in the USA simply because of much of the reality bullshit on TV over there, and came home to see NZ heading in the same direction. Completely stopped watching TV when I returned (2013).
Everything is just “spend 70$ monthly to get a 420p tv resolution TV channel” like everything is just money money money money

I miss you ,TVNZ 7 and Greg Boyed RIP you were an amazing guy and loved it when you were on the telly. I watched this live at home, what gets me down is the ads they have for programmes like meet the locals only for them not to be shown again. TV is horrible ever since I'm sick to death of reality shows and o don't even watch TV anymore.

Tvnz heartland tvnz6 and tvnz7 all ended in 2012 and all started in 2008 or 2009 sad for tvnz

So if money had to go to other channels where are those other channels now? Heartland etc and why do we have at least 2 chinese channels, an indian one and aljazeera? If you move to a new country, you should watch the available tv channels, not expect your own exclusive channels. I bet China does not provide NZ content and channels for kiwis living and working there.

I Think TVNZ made a mistake! Public news and television is just what NZ wanted! And they shut it down just for TVNZ 1 Delayed a hour! And I watched the news since I was 3! And the best news was probably TVNZ news! But Why!! If you missed your show on one too bad! Just Go on TVNZ on-demand! And it is a shame that Kidzone went because I grew up with that channel! And in 2013 TVNZ U got a boot for TVNZ 2 delayed in hour! But TVNZ U wasn't really my thing!But also it was a shame that MediaWorks Changed Four to Bravo! Cause Four had lots of variety and lots of good movies!And they Change It for a reality tv channel!There is nothing good on that channel! The only Thing they have that I interesting is Hoarders and The Internet ruined my life! But enough about that! I just think they shouldn't off got rid of TVNZ 7! But what can we do about it now! It been more than 5 years since they changed it! So I think NZ lost a great non commercial public channel and it was educational like it had news,Politics, technology and the arts! And yeah!

I don't understand it. Just like here in Australia, there is very little diversity & no matter where you go in either country, tv is predictably & predominantly the same. Boring ❕❗ In the US & Canada, there are private commercial stations, in addition to the six main network tv channels. Far more diversity. I never got an opportunity to see TVNZ 7, although I have been to New Zealand 8 times in 1999 & from 2013 to 2017, I have seen plenty of changes in choice of New Zealand television, but with little diversity, only a handful of main channels with the remainder being mainly niche channels, +1 hr time-shifted channels or community channels.
