PaisLee hit it on the head. Giving is so much more satisfying than buying for oneself or even receiving. It's true.
My dad has a habit of picking up people's checks in restaurants. He's been doing it for as long as I have have been aware of him. Not big restaurants, but when we go to a diner for breakfast or maybe a Denny's. He looks around and just picks out someone (usually a mom with kids...I see you dad lol) and requests their check and pays it with a generous tip. Then we leave. No notice to anyone. The reason he does this is that he remembered that when he was small, he and his sister were at a breakfast bar with their mom and someone had paid their bill. He repays it to this day. Not because he's a saint (he is not lol), but because it's fun.
