"Just explore... and play." Such simple advice that is often difficult for people to even attempt. I was a guitar teacher before a TBI made it too difficult for me to keep up. I'm still playing and creating sounds, but after having COVID, my brain injury symptoms returned, along with an unquenchable thirst for drawing and painting. Something I had never done before. I'm a year and a half in and I'm loving it. Thank you for reminding me to play and just enjoy myself without imposing expectations and limiting myself with beliefs about what I can and cannot do.
When I was teaching, I would get certain students who I could tell were a little different from the rest. You can spot true love from a distance. These were the students who I would push to abandon all of their preconceived notions about the guitar and music, if only for a day, and JUST PLAY... like a child would play. It was impossible for some. Some needed a little nudge, so I would help them along. I would make up a one sentence story, like: "The mouse heard one of the giant, loud monsters coming and ran to hide under the humming box where the cheese was stored." And say... "now try to tell me that story with guitar sounds." Sometimes that would loosen them up. But the ones who really got it and learned to "just F with the instrument to see what it can do", ended up discovering things they otherwise never would have and added those things to their arsenal. Some of them were able to let go enough that they stumbled right into their voice, which some people never find. One student, found that she had many distinct musical voices she could use at will. That kind of discovery is exciting to see happen.
So once again, thank you for reminding me to play. Even though I've only been making visual art for a little over a year, I'm putting my stuff out there with my sound paintings on UA-cam. It's fun and if one person likes it, that's a good thing. Plus it seems to be helping my brain not fall apart.

You found such wonderful creative and playful approaches both for your students and yourself! Wow.

You know what’s funny? I did this last night and realized that the drawing looks so much more relaxed and organic. I also painted a plant! Koosje, you are so encouraging. It makes me happy that we coincidentally did the same thing!

I love working this “backwards” way. Loosens things up so they look “fresh”. Thanks.

Great idea, Koosje! I just did a "classic" draw-then-add colour sketch of tonight's salad. Tomorrow I'll try this idea!! THANKS 🤗🙏

I put this video together with the one you suggested us to try gouache - picked up my son’s set that was lying around, painted with them and then added lines. It was a lot of fun, thank you so much for your videos! 😊

Koosje, what kind of brush is that? I have a Princeton Neptune dagger and it's not working for me.
