This is so stupid. So much energy wasted, so expensive to replace tubes. You may have one tube per channel and sensitive speakers and have great sound. Tubes were in era of 100dB/1m/1W speakers and are great for that. Even with two tubes you may go woth 20W or more in PP or PSE and with 90dB plus speakers will be just enough.
I own a pair of these, and they are the best amps I've ever heard. I'm feeding the amps with a Conrad Johnson Premier ten preamp that's been hot rodded a bit. Then the amps are driving a pair of B&W 801 series 3 speakers. It's more amp than I need, but I run them 99% in the triode mode, and they sound super sweet. I've run a lot of Audio Research amps in the past, and love their products, but the Wotans just have a lot of punch to them that the Audio Research amps don't have. The only down side to the Wotans is if you have to move them, you pretty much need to find two 20yr old wrestlers to lift them. Biasing them once a year is a piece of cake. Oh, and living in Minnesota, I don't mind the extra free heat in the listening room that the Wotans provide!
I have the Ichiban's. You have obviously needed to replace a cathode bypass capacitor on occasion after a tube failure. Not a big deal if you are familiar with the soldering iron. I run mine off 240 volt power input in triode mode since they were designed for triode only. Very enjoyable listening for many years now. That's a lot of tubes.
Paul Klipsch famously stated that, "Power equals distortion" and that was his base approach to making very sensitive speakers. There is another well known engineering saying, "cumulative error". I am afraid that this approach invites that phrase.
That's kind of what I was wondering, the more devices in an output path the higher chance of some of them becoming dissimilar in the arc of the soundwave. As their is no such thing as mirror image output devices? I guess that's why they have a bias adjustment for each valve, or tube as most people call them. I've been doing amateur, hobby amp repair for about 20 years but I wouldn't dare call myself an expert or someone who would give advice as if I knew more than they. But I was intrigued by your comment to the point of reply. Thanks.
Some Klipsch speakers can be fun to listen to but there are others that are pretty poor. I don't believe Klipsch would want a totally flat frequency response speaker as they tend to sound lifeless and dull. So I guess just as distortion is present in Amplifiers, colouration is present in Speakers. The difference with Tube Amp distortion is that second order harmonic and even order harmonic distortion are known to be very pleasant to the human ear where as solid state amp distortion is very much not. I would wager that a blind listening test between a solid state and Tube although unscientific would be heavily in favour of the tubes
@@Gez492 but wouldn’t you agree this only pertains to the mids and highs and thus high wattage isn’t necessary in this frequency range. I mean we already have seen the popularity of separate subwoofer systems with satellite type speaker configuration. This in turn would seem to eliminate the need for a high powered tube amplifier. In addition, drawing power to the hungry subwoofers can in effect impact the sound of the mids and highs for tube amps much more so than solid state. Tube amps produce too much heat and draw too much electricity and require too much maintenance over time. It’s not with it for me. I would rather spend my money on cars. I have Class A/B amps. No maintenance at all for over 20 years. Just turn on and play. No hassles.
Incredible. What a waste of money for ANY home! 10 or 15 Dyna ST 70s and a few Mark IVs (with modest and cheap mods) will do the job,and be easier to distribute the power around your huge mansion without significant phase error. -Unless you live in a 450' Manhattan studio and want to scare the tar and nicotine out of your local civil defense authorities? ------------------------------------ Frustrating. My previous query was, "What is the highest power class A, valve audio amplifier design?" I simply want to find the valve rated for the highest, class A, AF power output (under 1 or 2% THD) . I must try again.
Push Pull/ BRIDGED same thingy. You get NO true Base in Bridge mode because there is no NATURAL decay, & that's what makes the Base sound warmer & better.
No point, if you want to hear them you will have to physically go there. Capturing the output then running it through UA-cam, and then your sound system will give you nothing useful. Pick your favourite record, play it on your system, it'll be way better than any UA-cam recording.
Yeah ideal for summer hot days. :) How much 48 tubes costs replace? But for audiphiles from Alaska or Winnipeg it is a best choice - 2 in 1 amplification and heater.
That meter right on top of the running transformer seems kind of suspect. I allways keep my meters as far away from any kind of field as I can. Sometimes you have no choice. I'm not criticizing please dont be offended as I am not an expert. Badass amps no doubt. I just acquired a pair of Emotiva xpa1 gen2s and the xpa1 gen2, and damn do they sound good for a chinese manufactured amp. And the price they are hard to beat as a dollar for watt, sound quality amp.
Cool looking , but I have NO idea what your talking about . For me the most important thing is having a very low THD oh , and how many neighbor's I can piss off , just kidding . I was given a old Heathkit amp and tuner . I gave it away when I was told that it stores enough electricity to kill is that true then and now ? My choice is solid state from the 70s .
Whether the tube amp could really deliver that huge power to the speakers is not important! Simply because most good hifi speakers in the market would gives enough sound pressure level for just about 5 to30 watt input power. For hifi music reproduction at most home listening rooms, the most important thing to consider are music reproduction fidelity.
Wow, awesome Monoblocks. I do have an all new appreciation for the auto biasing on my PrimaLuna Evo300 Tube Integrated amp. Thanks for the video, was very interesting.

5c: That was not a driver stage. It has 4 6550s (KT88) above the transformer. Three tiny 9s are in a pre-amping stage. If they need so much money, they could add one BJT per a tube to set a bias automatically once forever.
also your better off with a resistor, maybe ideally a lightbulb, but with so many tubes all the bjts would fight eachother and react to bass notes probably .. . . Don't fall for all this peavey transtube marshall valvestate stuff bro

dude talks about the horsepower this thing makes, then rests the meter directly on the transformer.. Idk I'm superstitious about that kind of thing... even solid state components and especially capacitors in magnetic flux...
Interesting comments from folks who have not had any real listening time on these. With a year and half a dozen speaker/cable/source and room combinations, and many hours of listening and comparing to other amps, a different perspective is gained. Very special beasts.

Also function as space heaters in stereo.
Great space heaters.
You could use one of these amplifiers for arc welding.

It's incredibly ironic at how quiet the audio is for this video.

No heat needed in winter, but a hell of an AC unit for summer. My SVT has meet her match.
Not bad for heating systems on winter.
As audio amplifier I am not sure.
A PPP KT 88/120 is overdriving a pair of BW 802.
These guys talk so many details it sounds like it has to BS. Amazingly it seems legit
These VTL's are... in a word. Nuts.
Wild!!
With the MB450 I really prefer the triode for all listening
well gosh it doesn't sound like there are too dam many people that can meet your qualifications for a sale!

They make bigger tubes for this exact reason. A push pull amp with more than 2 tubes/channel is just showing off but has no purpose.
And now that I see the bias adjustment it makes this amp look even more absurd. If that's possible.
What is the track playing at 7:32?
