  • We take a look at the wave of vintage Playmates TMNT figures that started it all in 1988, and I give my opinions on the figures and share my personal memories of each one. It's a loose, unscripted ramble, so expect a long, kinda messy video.

    One of my best memories as a kid was my parents coming home from Kiddie City with all 4 Turtles and Bebop and Rocksteady, then later that year for Christmas I got the rest of the wave.

      That sounds awesome. Getting all 6 of those at once must have led to months of playing

    Just found this channel and these vids. I just started collecting some vintage TMNT after getting into the Super 7 line so I'd have a figure from each era so these are great.

      If you had to not get one, April is definitely the one to not get. Her toy was significantly lamer than the others.

    I also could never choose between Don and Raph. I'd say my fav is Raph, but that's because I love the sais so much. I'm also reading the IDW comics for the first time right now, and Raph is definitely a much deeper and interesting character there!

    Awesome review! It's fun hearing others' stories about collecting the line! I totally agree on Splinter--I think he might have been my least favorite figure out of the entire toy line. I was a bit surprised/disappointed that Super7 included him in their first wave--I would have put him a bit further down the line to get some more interesting characters upfront, but they still did a really good job with him! :D

      @brendansrambles9464  3 роки тому

      Yeah, I agree, though the S7 one is a huge improvement, like you said. I can't wait until Super 7 gets to the wacky stuff like Wyrm and hothead

    Interesting to hear others childhood memories!
    I loved adding the April figure as a kid to finally complete Series 1. I had the v2 with the new head and yellow/orange jumpsuit. That head sculpt was better imho.
    TMNT was my biggest childhood collection. Unfortunately not everything was released in my birth county.
    A common thing in the United States is Parents donating, selling them at a garage sale or trashing the toys of their kids. Or teenagers destroying their toys. I cringe every time I hear it.
    In the Netherlands it's a very rare thing Parents would to do, being frugal is the name of the game. Parents paying about $10 usd per figure (compared to the $3 in the USA) and $50 usd for a Party Wagon was a huge factor. Expensive licenced toys overseas!
    A Teacher outright stealing a toy wouldn't fly either. I would have bugged the crap out of that "Teacher" and let my parent know if I wouldn't get it back. Classmates sneaking back in the classroom stealing toys brought to school during breaks was unfortunately a very real thing. If only the teachers had locks on the classrooms back in those days...

    • @brendansrambles9464
      @brendansrambles9464  2 роки тому

      To be fair, I don't think a teacher stealing a toy would have flown in a public school here, but the school we went to was a private Catholic school. I had no idea figures were that much more expensive in the Netherlands, though. That's insane. Nice to hear toys were treated better over there, though.
      The orange April was definitely better than the original one.

    I’ve been a massive fan of the turtles since 1987. I was 4 years old in 1987. I’ve been in love ever since. It’s interesting that you say Leonardo is your least favorite and Michelangelo was your favorite when you were a child. Michelangelo is definitely a character for kids. The other three are more mature. In a weird way. When I first fell in love with the turtles, Michelangelo was definitely my favorite. I was all about Michelangelo. As I grew up and became more mature, Michelangelo became my least favorite. Like I said, he was definitely developed to appeal to very small children. Now, I don’t really have a favorite, Rafael and Donatello are probably the most awesome but not really super crazy about Raf’s weapons. I do love Leonardo also and the coolest thing about Leo are his katanas. He definitely has the best weapons out of the four. If I had to put them in number of places though I would say Rafael and Donatello are tied for number one and Leo is definitely a very close number two.

    • @brendansrambles9464
      @brendansrambles9464  2 роки тому

      Leo definitely does have the best weapons. I love all the turtles, but he is the lowest ranking for me.

    The Playmates Shredder's pose references his iconic pose in his first appearance in the Mirage comic. I understand what the were trying to do, but it didn't translate well. Maybe the weirdest figure in the series.

    • @brendansrambles9464
      @brendansrambles9464  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, it's a weird translation for sure. I guess I at least respect its uniqueness and ambition over all other human figures in the 80s, though.

      Also according to the guy who designed it he was trying to make a super tall figure that also scaled with the rest of the line, it was supposed to be "added value" but it's still weird as hell looking

    • @brendansrambles9464
      @brendansrambles9464  11 місяців тому

      I can kind of see how that made sense to them. When paired against crazy figures like Bebop and Rocksteady, they probably wanted ways for the Shredder figure to feel more valuable than it is, so every figure in the wave would sell well.

    I read somewhere that in 1987 that time, Playmates were rushing to released TMNT figures after the five pilot episodes were debut that is... So they didn't have time to paint the Shredder properly, which why he's shirtless with blue armor and other weird colors, another reason i read that Playmates running out of colors that time to paint the Shredder the right colors.... Is what I read that is, not sure these reasons are true.... Also according to 'The toys that made us' the reason they made the Shredder crouch like that to fits in the blister pack, They want to keep him tall as the Mirage comic that is... Mark Taylor (He-man creator) tried to make the Shredder hand pose like that, like it trying to attack in martial arts pose... (Mark Taylor did comment that April figure is so stupid looking, lol) kinda wish they release the Shredder of ten backs with the toon shredder paint job... (TBH, when I got that Shredder when i was kid got me scratching my head on it's paint job and it's pose.. is like i much prefer the wacky action shredder than this original shredder)
