  • Take a couple minutes to see how to property put on a gait belt. It's one of the most important tools for anyone who helps another person with walking, or going from one seated position to the next. In 14 years of working with elderly I've seen many experienced caregivers not know how to properly put a gait belt on so they don't use them, putting the person they are helping and them self at risk.

No matter how many times I have put a gait belt on my elderly parent, I always seem to forget how to properly do it! Thank you for posting a clear, easy to follow explanation of it! And thank you to all Physical Therapists who often go unnoticed and are unappreciated in helping to rehabilitate people and help get them back on their feet and/or greatly improve the quality of their life!!

Thank you so very much. It looks simple until you try to do it. So I appreciate you giving close-up images of how to use the buckle.

I’m helping to provide care for my elderly mom who is in hospice with stage 4 cancer in her low intestine. We’d like to use a gate belt, but she has a colostomy bag, so the placement of the belt as shown in the video isn’t a safe option. Is there another way to secure the belt safely that doesn’t involve the abdominal area?

Thank you, I’m looking for a belt without a lot of excess strap for my petite mom. What brand belt is in this video?

Best thing to do is google gait belt. you will see many just like the one we used. I'm not sure of an actual brand name for it but they are very affordable at under $10 typically.
